WEBVTT 00:01.010 --> 00:07.270 This morning I'm gonna be preaching a follow-up to the sermon that I did on Wednesday night on a man after God's own heart 00:07.270 --> 00:10.170 So this is part two of a man after God's own heart 00:10.170 --> 00:17.790 And we were looking at what made David a man after God's own heart because not only is David given that title in scripture 00:17.790 --> 00:20.570 Which is a pretty amazing and powerful title to be given 00:20.570 --> 00:27.030 But also we see that out of all of the characters in the Bible. He has mentioned more than anyone else 00:27.030 --> 00:30.810 He's mentioned over eleven hundred times by name 00:31.010 --> 00:35.530 Which is more than any other person in the Bible. Moses is close with I think like 00:36.310 --> 00:41.770 848 mentions or somewhere in that neighborhood and then it drops off down to the four hundreds two hundreds 00:41.770 --> 00:44.950 I mean really David has a huge 00:46.230 --> 00:50.850 Important spotlight in scripture. He's the man after God's own heart and you know 00:50.850 --> 00:54.030 I said on Wednesday night somebody told me that they didn't like David in the Bible 00:54.030 --> 00:54.810 They didn't like that care 00:54.810 --> 00:58.370 I'm just like do you even like the Bible because he's mentioned so much 00:58.370 --> 01:00.970 So we went through chapter 16 last time 01:00.970 --> 01:03.830 I'm not going to repreach that sermon about all those attributes 01:03.830 --> 01:08.070 But I want to look at the attributes that we see about David in chapter 17 01:08.070 --> 01:12.870 So that we can see why he's a man after God's own heart so that we can be the same way so that we can learn 01:12.870 --> 01:15.990 From these attributes look down to verse number 25 01:15.990 --> 01:20.530 It says the men of Israel said have you seen this man that has come up 01:20.530 --> 01:27.870 Surely to defy Israel is he come up and it shall be that the man who killeth him the king will enrich him with great 01:27.870 --> 01:33.310 Riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel 01:33.310 --> 01:38.270 So of course, you know the Philistines and the Israelites they're faced off in battle 01:38.270 --> 01:45.170 They're sort of at a stalemate. They're kind of just there for 40 days and nobody's really winning 01:45.170 --> 01:51.170 And so this champion Goliath comes out from the Philistine side and says, you know 01:51.170 --> 01:54.410 Send me one man to fight me in single combat 01:54.410 --> 02:01.330 And if I win then the Philistines win and you guys serve us and if he wins then the Israelites win 02:01.330 --> 02:05.370 The Philistines will serve you guys. So instead of the two armies fighting 02:05.370 --> 02:08.950 Let's just have one man fight one man to settle this 02:08.950 --> 02:15.830 Well, nobody has the guts to face off with Goliath even King Saul himself who's had in shoulders above all the people 02:15.830 --> 02:19.950 Doesn't believe apparently that he's any match for Goliath 02:19.950 --> 02:26.830 Everyone's afraid everyone's hiding and so they're trying to kind of sweeten the deal for whoever will do this by saying look 02:26.830 --> 02:32.490 If you go against Goliath, you're gonna be enriched with great riches. So you're gonna get financial reward 02:33.090 --> 02:36.290 You're gonna get the king's daughter as your wife 02:36.290 --> 02:40.270 So, I mean, this is pretty important because now you're the king's son-in-law 02:40.270 --> 02:45.790 I mean you've married into the royal family now and then your father's house will be free in Israel 02:45.790 --> 02:51.090 Which is probably referring to the fact that he's gonna be tax-free, you know, he doesn't have to pay taxes 02:51.090 --> 02:57.310 He doesn't have to do any kind of levy of manpower or anything. His father's house is is free in Israel 02:57.850 --> 03:01.750 Look what David responds to this in verse 26 says and David 03:02.290 --> 03:08.810 Spake to the men that stood by him saying what shall be done to the man that killed this Philistine and 03:08.810 --> 03:12.590 Take it the way the reproach from Israel for who is this uncircumcised 03:12.590 --> 03:18.390 Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God. So he's interested in the rewards 03:18.390 --> 03:23.270 He's saying like hey, tell me again what I'm gonna get in the showcase here 03:23.270 --> 03:26.150 What am I gonna win here if I defeat Goliath? 03:26.430 --> 03:30.550 But ultimately saying, you know, I don't like the fact that this uncircumcised 03:30.550 --> 03:33.870 Philistine is defying the armies of the living God 03:33.870 --> 03:34.750 so he's clearly 03:35.270 --> 03:41.450 Contemplating getting in there doing this fight and winning the rewards for himself now 03:41.450 --> 03:47.050 Of course, here's the funny thing we just read in the chapter that David is obviously the younger brother 03:47.050 --> 03:51.310 His older brothers have been sent to go fight in this battle 03:51.310 --> 03:54.790 He seems to have been considered maybe a little bit too young, you know 03:54.790 --> 04:01.430 So he's staying back with the sheep the oldest three brothers are at an age where it's appropriate for them to go 04:01.430 --> 04:05.390 To battle with Saul whereas David is still considered a little bit too young 04:05.390 --> 04:10.210 So it's like what in the world out of all of these seasoned veterans and military men, you know 04:10.210 --> 04:14.490 David the youngest the least likely who's really not even part of the army 04:14.490 --> 04:22.150 He literally just shows up to bring food and treats to his brothers and to the captain and to just kind of check in 04:22.150 --> 04:26.830 All of a sudden he's just like hey, let's go put me in coach. He's not even on the team 04:26.830 --> 04:31.390 So point number one about why David was a man after God's own heart 04:31.390 --> 04:37.930 Is that he wanted to achieve great things for God and to get the rewards that go along with that 04:37.930 --> 04:40.690 He wanted to do something great for God and get the rewards 04:40.690 --> 04:48.730 It made me think of the Apostle Paul saying I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in 04:49.510 --> 04:54.510 Christ Jesus go if you would to Hebrews chapter number 11 Hebrews chapter number 11 04:54.510 --> 04:57.170 We're gonna come back to first Samuel 17 throughout the sermon 04:57.170 --> 05:01.430 But we're gonna look at a lot of stuff in the New Testament as well Hebrews chapter 11 05:01.430 --> 05:05.290 He wanted to do something big for God and he wanted the rewards that went along 05:05.290 --> 05:10.090 He's present toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus 05:10.090 --> 05:13.490 Of course Jesus Christ said at the very end of the Bible behold 05:13.490 --> 05:18.290 I come quickly and my reward is with me to give every man 05:18.290 --> 05:25.430 According as his work shall be look at Hebrews 11 24 by faith Moses when he was come to years 05:25.430 --> 05:27.690 Refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter 05:27.690 --> 05:35.050 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season a 05:35.050 --> 05:36.670 Steaming the reproach of Christ 05:36.670 --> 05:44.050 Greater riches than the treasures in Egypt for he had respect under the recompense of the reward 05:44.050 --> 05:50.430 See he's thinking about the reward not on this earth, but the reward in heaven not 05:50.430 --> 05:55.330 Temporarily being a big shot in Egypt being the son of Pharaoh's daughter 05:55.330 --> 05:59.730 Getting all the accolades of this world and succeeding in the eyes of this world 05:59.730 --> 06:04.310 No, he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. He said you know what? 06:04.310 --> 06:12.850 Getting reproached for the name of Christ being criticized maligned for the name of Christ in this life is worth it 06:12.850 --> 06:20.130 Because rejoice and be exceeding glad greater your rewards in heaven and he had respect to the recompense of the reward 06:20.130 --> 06:25.170 He's not trying to just live for the here and now and enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season 06:25.170 --> 06:31.870 No, he wants to do something big for God. He wants to suffer for Christ so that he could get the rewards 06:31.870 --> 06:36.470 He esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt 06:37.390 --> 06:41.870 But not only does God promise to reward us when he returns 06:41.870 --> 06:44.350 Not only are we laying up for ourselves? 06:44.850 --> 06:46.730 Treasures in heaven and not on the earth 06:46.730 --> 06:53.230 But God also does actually reward us in this lifetime right here and now the Bible's clear on that 06:53.230 --> 06:58.950 Go if you would to mark chapter number 10 mark the gospel of mark chapter 10 while you're turning there 06:58.950 --> 07:05.330 I'm going to read for you from Proverbs 11 30 it says the fruit of the righteous is a tree of life and 07:05.330 --> 07:08.310 He that when its souls is wise 07:09.010 --> 07:13.530 Behold the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth 07:14.090 --> 07:15.930 How much more the wicked in the center? 07:16.130 --> 07:23.870 I mean even in this lifetime if you do right God is going to reward you God's going to bless you even with temporal blessings and 07:24.390 --> 07:30.830 Even in this lifetime right now wicked people are going to have bad things happen to them and it's not going to go well for them 07:30.830 --> 07:34.750 They're not going to be blessed even in this life according to Proverbs 11 31 07:35.590 --> 07:41.330 Now while you're turning to mark 10, there's a parallel passage in Matthew 19 verse 27 07:41.330 --> 07:49.630 Then answered Peter and said to him behold we have forsaken all and followed the what shall we have there for so? 07:49.630 --> 07:54.610 Peter says look we forsook everything. We're following you. What do we get for doing that? 07:55.210 --> 08:00.970 Look at mark 10 verse 28 Peter began to say unto him low we have left all and a followed thee right? 08:01.850 --> 08:06.010 Look what Jesus answers him verse 29 and Jesus answered and said barely 08:06.010 --> 08:13.070 I say to you there is no man that it's left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or 08:13.070 --> 08:15.770 children or lands for my sake in the Gospels 08:15.770 --> 08:18.050 but he shall receive a 08:18.050 --> 08:24.290 Hundred fold now in this time right so we're not even talking about when you get to heaven the next life 08:24.290 --> 08:29.730 We're talking about in this time. He will receive a hundred fold 08:29.730 --> 08:34.890 Houses brethren sisters mothers children and lands notice 08:34.890 --> 08:37.630 He doesn't say wives because you're only allowed to have one wife 08:37.630 --> 08:42.270 So he he can't be like hey, I'll give you a hundred fold of wives now this it's not the way it works 08:42.270 --> 08:46.630 He says and lands for my sake in the Gospels 08:46.630 --> 08:50.930 He says sorry at the end of verse 30. He says children and lands with 08:52.010 --> 08:57.430 Persecutions and in the world to come eternal life. So you say like look you got eternal life coming up 08:57.430 --> 09:00.510 You're going to heaven for all eternity. That's great 09:00.510 --> 09:04.390 But even now in this life, I'm going to reward you a hundred fold 09:04.390 --> 09:08.610 Whatever you give up for the cause of Christ, you're going to get a hundred fold now 09:08.610 --> 09:14.130 This is different than the so-called prosperity gospel or the health and wealth gospel 09:14.130 --> 09:19.950 Because they will tend to tell you that you're just going to succeed and do great and everything's going to go well for you 09:19.950 --> 09:22.310 As long as you have faith and name it claim it 09:22.310 --> 09:26.230 They're missing this part that says with persecutions 09:26.790 --> 09:31.750 God's not saying everything's going to go your way. He's not saying you're not going to have serious problems 09:31.750 --> 09:39.550 health problems relationship problems persecution maybe even prison maybe even beatings and different things that God says 09:39.550 --> 09:44.890 Will happen to those who believe and many of these same apostles went through those things 09:44.890 --> 09:52.090 It's not like people like Peter James and John didn't get imprisoned or martyred or whatever 09:52.090 --> 09:54.270 So he's saying with persecutions 09:54.270 --> 09:59.290 But what does he mean when he says I'm going to give you a hundred fold houses brother and sisters 09:59.290 --> 10:04.830 He's saying look. Yeah, maybe physical family members will burn you and disown you 10:04.830 --> 10:12.770 But you've got brothers and sisters in Christ, you know for every brother that burns you and forsakes you or 10:12.770 --> 10:17.690 You know betrays you or whatever you got a hundred other brethren, you know for whatever 10:18.270 --> 10:25.210 Guest house that you wanted to have up in the mountains and in Hawaii and on the beach or whatever houses you give up 10:25.210 --> 10:32.570 You're gonna have as a zealous Christian a hundred different houses because you pretty much are gonna have your friends everywhere 10:32.570 --> 10:35.550 You go your soul winning buddies your brothers and sisters in Christ 10:35.550 --> 10:40.070 I mean think about it if you're a zealous soul winning servant of God 10:40.070 --> 10:46.030 You pretty much go all over the country and all over the world and you got all kinds of places to stay you got houses to 10:46.030 --> 10:53.010 Go hang out at and have dinner and spend the night because you've got a network of people that are serving God with you 10:54.030 --> 10:59.870 And so God's got something better for you. Yeah, but I don't really own those houses. Well, who cares? 11:00.650 --> 11:06.490 You know, it's so funny. I've noticed that little kids are obsessed with like they have to own everything 11:07.210 --> 11:13.810 You know, it's so it'll be like hey, you can use this whenever you want. Yeah, but is it but is it mine? 11:14.410 --> 11:18.370 Do I own it? I'm like, well, it doesn't really matter because you can use it whenever you want, you know 11:18.370 --> 11:21.070 And and it's like, you know my son this morning 11:21.070 --> 11:24.890 I'm swinging my son all over on the swing this morning and he's saying like hey dad 11:24.890 --> 11:28.990 Can you get me my own swing and it's it's only just him on the swing and I'm sorry 11:28.990 --> 11:32.350 Can I get my own swing? I'm like, well, no because I said, you know 11:32.350 --> 11:38.670 We're not just all gonna have our own swing because then that would just be like nine swings or something 11:38.670 --> 11:41.590 It's just too many swings. It doesn't make any sense, you know 11:41.590 --> 11:44.370 But but but you can swing in the swing whenever you want son 11:44.930 --> 11:48.290 But but kids are lights like no, it's got to be all mine or whatever 11:48.290 --> 11:53.290 But but at the end of the day, that's kind of an immature attitude because at the end of the day, you know 11:53.290 --> 11:55.390 We're gonna all lose everything eventually anyway 11:55.910 --> 12:01.470 Everything that we see is temporal everything's temporary, you know, yeah, you own your house 12:01.470 --> 12:03.570 But you know what some day it's gonna turn to dust 12:04.010 --> 12:07.130 Some day it's gonna be burned up, you know at the end of the day 12:07.130 --> 12:09.970 All that matters is that you got a nice place to stay right now 12:10.530 --> 12:14.070 Whether you own it or rent it or whether you're just staying with somebody 12:14.070 --> 12:21.070 Hey, if you've got a nice bed and a pillow to put your head on and climate control and good food in the fridge 12:21.070 --> 12:27.330 Having food and rain let us be with her with content. We don't have to necessarily be the owners of all these things 12:28.010 --> 12:30.510 Houses brother and sisters father 12:30.510 --> 12:35.470 Mother, you know, God's gonna provide you with just amazing fellowship 12:35.470 --> 12:42.130 That's better than whatever physical family member has, you know burned you because of the cause of Christ 12:42.130 --> 12:46.730 If you're suffering for Christ's sake in the gospel, he's saying I'll reward you right now 12:46.730 --> 12:52.870 And so and so David is looking at this as you know, I want to do something great for God and I want to get the rewards 12:53.710 --> 12:55.590 You know, we want the heavenly rewards 12:55.590 --> 13:01.070 We want the rewards on this earth and a lot of people would say like oh you're doing it for the wrong reasons 13:01.070 --> 13:02.570 If you're doing it for the rewards really 13:03.370 --> 13:06.330 Because the Bible seems to constantly be motivating us with rewards 13:06.870 --> 13:10.830 Hey, my reward is with me to give every man according as his work shall be 13:11.430 --> 13:13.630 Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven 13:14.930 --> 13:20.350 Why would it be wrong to be motivated by wanting to do something great for God and earn some rewards? 13:20.550 --> 13:22.310 It's not so that's number one about David 13:22.310 --> 13:27.190 Let's look at point two about David back in first Samuel 1726 and 13:28.110 --> 13:33.750 David's fake to the men that stood by him saying what shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine and 13:33.750 --> 13:37.130 Take it the way the reproach from Israel for who is this? 13:37.950 --> 13:41.650 Uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God 13:41.650 --> 13:49.510 Number two is that David is personally offended by an attack on God and by an attack on the people of God 13:49.510 --> 13:54.670 Right the reproach on Israel. He feels that personally like hey 13:54.670 --> 13:58.630 How dare this guy speak against the people of God? 13:59.110 --> 14:05.230 How dare this guy defy the living God and defy the armies of the living God? 14:05.330 --> 14:07.870 Now if you want to go to John chapter 2 in the New Testament 14:07.870 --> 14:13.170 John chapter 2 in the New Testament, so we said number one he wanted to do something great for God 14:13.170 --> 14:14.590 You want to get those rewards? 14:15.510 --> 14:20.710 Number two, he's personally offended by the attack on God and on God's people 14:22.130 --> 14:29.330 In Psalm 69 verse 9 it says this for the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up and 14:29.330 --> 14:34.710 The reproaches of them that reproach thee are falling upon me. He's saying you know when people 14:34.710 --> 14:38.610 Say something against God. He's basically said I took that personally 14:38.610 --> 14:43.810 You know when people criticize the house of God. I took that personally, right? 14:44.090 --> 14:46.430 He cared about the reproach of God's people 14:46.430 --> 14:51.490 He's personally offended by the attack on God and his people look at John chapter 2 verse 13 14:51.490 --> 14:57.290 And the Jews Passover was at hand and Jesus went up to Jerusalem and found in the temple those that sold 14:57.290 --> 15:03.450 Oxen and sheep and doves and the changes of money sitting and when he had made a scourge of small cords 15:03.450 --> 15:09.530 He drove them all out of the temple and the sheep and the oxen and poured out the changers money and 15:09.530 --> 15:18.030 Overthrew the tables and said to them that sold doves take these things hence make not my father's house and house of 15:18.030 --> 15:20.790 merchandise he's saying look you guys have 15:20.790 --> 15:26.890 Perverted and corrupted the house of God because you're selling things in the house of God now 15:26.890 --> 15:32.950 There's nothing wrong with selling things. There's nothing wrong with selling sheep and doves. There's nothing wrong with changing money 15:33.450 --> 15:40.590 But the problem is when you turn God's house into a house of merchandise, which is why nothing has ever bought or sold here at our church 15:40.590 --> 15:42.330 It's why when we have activities 15:42.330 --> 15:49.610 They're always free and whenever we have any things that we're giving out as far as like t-shirts and hats and 15:49.610 --> 15:52.950 Books and CDs and DVDs those are obsolete now 15:52.950 --> 15:59.270 But back when we did hand out a lot of DVDs and flash drives and different things, you know, it's always been free 15:59.270 --> 16:03.430 We're not like oh you got to pay for the sermon CD. Oh 16:03.450 --> 16:08.230 You got to buy a Bible. No, we're giving you the Bible for free. We've got the New Testament for free 16:08.230 --> 16:14.630 I mean, I'm telling you in the old IFB you have to buy everything. I 16:14.630 --> 16:20.330 Mean I went to an independent fundamental Baptist church and you had to buy the tracks that you use out soul winning 16:21.130 --> 16:25.490 You'd buy a little pack of a few tracks for a buck so to go soul winning for a few hours 16:25.490 --> 16:29.610 You're gonna spend three four bucks on the tracks. I 16:29.610 --> 16:31.810 Mean who goes the warfare at his own charge 16:32.290 --> 16:35.430 So what the Bible says like why would I have to pay? 16:36.050 --> 16:42.110 For the invitations to hand out soul winning, but it's just anytime there's any food if there were doughnuts in the old 16:42.110 --> 16:47.710 IFB it's like you got to buy those doughnuts and it's a fundraiser to send the kids to camp or blah 16:47.710 --> 16:51.610 It's always selling you something the books are for sale 16:51.610 --> 16:54.550 The Bibles are for sale the CDs are for sale and again 16:54.550 --> 16:56.470 I'm not saying it's wrong to sell those things 16:56.470 --> 17:05.430 Somewhere else and that's why Jesus's answer is take these things hence the word hence means from here 17:06.110 --> 17:11.450 He's not saying what you're doing is bad per se. He's saying take it somewhere else 17:11.450 --> 17:18.330 And by the way, you shouldn't come to church and go around promoting your business and peddling your wares and 17:18.330 --> 17:22.130 Going around I mean some people just join a church just for the Tupper Party 17:22.130 --> 17:26.990 To get the Tupperware Party and the and the pampered chef and the vitamins and stuff look 17:26.990 --> 17:28.890 I'm glad you're doing all that stuff somewhere else 17:29.410 --> 17:35.150 But the house of God is not a house of merchandise now Jesus is clearly mad about this 17:35.150 --> 17:39.390 Now Jesus is not a hothead who just loses temper at the drop of hat 17:39.390 --> 17:44.650 He's slow to anger because the Bible tells us that that's why we know that he didn't just blow up 17:44.650 --> 17:46.770 Because he sat down and he literally 17:47.430 --> 17:48.730 manufactured a whip 17:49.690 --> 17:52.570 You know now I've never manufactured my own whip 17:52.570 --> 18:00.270 But you know, I'm assuming this is gonna take some time to sit there and get the cords and make it into a scourge 18:00.270 --> 18:05.210 And he's sitting there and making it, you know, and this is this is premeditation 18:05.870 --> 18:07.550 This is not a crime of passion 18:07.550 --> 18:11.510 Of course, it wasn't a crime at all because he's Jesus and what he's doing is right 18:11.510 --> 18:17.450 But he's sitting there and premeditating this and he made a scourge of small cords 18:17.450 --> 18:23.010 And then he goes into the house and I mean, he's clearly upset. He's flipping over the tables 18:23.010 --> 18:28.310 He's dumping out their money. He's cracking the whip literally driving people out with a whip 18:28.930 --> 18:30.930 swinging a whip at people and 18:32.510 --> 18:38.970 Look at the disciples reaction to this. This is the Bible verse that pops into their mind from Psalm 69 verse 9 18:38.970 --> 18:46.690 It says in John 2 17 his disciples remembered that it was written the zeal of thine house had eaten me up 18:46.690 --> 18:52.690 They're like wow, this reminds me of that Bible verse that says the zeal of thine house had eaten me up 18:52.690 --> 18:55.530 Meaning that Jesus was just so eaten up 18:56.190 --> 18:58.050 It made him so mad 18:58.050 --> 19:04.310 Because he was zealous for the house of God and you know what if you are zealous as a Christian for the house of God 19:04.310 --> 19:09.170 Then you're gonna be offended when the house of God is being corrupted 19:10.150 --> 19:16.610 When it's being perverted when it's being corrupted and when it's being slandered and maligned 19:16.690 --> 19:23.910 And reproached right that's what he's because he said the zeal of thine house has eaten me up and the reproaches of them 19:23.910 --> 19:25.870 That reproached he fell on me. It's like hey 19:27.070 --> 19:28.210 That offends me 19:28.750 --> 19:33.130 You know you talk about the church that way you talk about God that way you talk about the Bible that way 19:33.130 --> 19:35.170 It's like, you know, I'm personally offended by that 19:35.170 --> 19:40.990 Do not I hate them? Oh Lord that hate thee and I'm not I grieve with them that rise up against thee 19:40.990 --> 19:44.290 you know the zeal of God's house should eat us up and 19:44.890 --> 19:53.730 We should be personally offended by blasphemy against God and people trashing and slandering our church and the people of God 19:53.730 --> 19:54.850 That should offend us 19:56.310 --> 20:02.110 So we said number two about David.
