WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:00.440
We pray, amen.

00:02.580 --> 00:03.020
Amen.

00:03.520 --> 00:06.060
Okay, we're in Matthew chapter 23 this evening.

00:06.280 --> 00:08.700
And the title of my sermon tonight is The Scribes.

00:08.780 --> 00:11.740
I'm going to preach on the subject of The Scribes.

00:11.820 --> 00:15.260
Now, Matthew chapter 23 is a very familiar portion of Scripture for us

00:15.260 --> 00:20.140
because we often associate it with Jesus' condemnation on the Pharisees.

00:20.260 --> 00:23.960
It's a very popular sermon that he preached against the Pharisees.

00:24.020 --> 00:27.880
And when we often read it, we focus on the Pharisees and rightfully so.

00:27.880 --> 00:32.520
But sometimes we forget that he's also addressing the scribes, right?

00:32.660 --> 00:36.680
He actually says, woe unto you scribes and Pharisees.

00:36.720 --> 00:43.040
In other words, the Pharisees were very much guilty of all the things that Jesus was saying here in Matthew 23.

00:43.580 --> 00:47.100
But we also see that the scribes were equally guilty of that as well.

00:47.220 --> 00:53.340
And we're going to go through this chapter and just kind of highlight some of the sins and hypocrisy of the scribes

00:53.340 --> 00:55.500
as highlighted here in Matthew 23.

00:55.500 --> 00:59.100
Now, hold your place there. Let's go to Jeremiah chapter 36, if you would.

00:59.700 --> 01:01.940
Jeremiah chapter 36.

01:02.500 --> 01:07.860
Before we get started on Matthew 23, let's talk about the office of a scribe.

01:07.940 --> 01:09.520
What is that referring to?

01:10.000 --> 01:13.220
What did these men do in the Bible?

01:13.580 --> 01:16.700
Because it's an office that we see not just in the New Testament,

01:16.700 --> 01:20.060
but we see also pretty prevalent in the old.

01:20.520 --> 01:23.660
Now, by the time we get to the 1st century AD, when dealing with the scribes,

01:23.660 --> 01:27.940
they're actually pretty wicked. They have a really negative connotation attached to them.

01:28.440 --> 01:31.800
They are false prophets. They're being preached against.

01:32.340 --> 01:38.020
They are often conspiring with the Pharisees and the chief priests against Jesus.

01:38.920 --> 01:42.520
And when we look at what the scribes or who the scribes are referring to in the Noom,

01:43.560 --> 01:47.560
it's often used interchangeably to describe the lawyers, right?

01:48.040 --> 01:52.120
The lawyers who have the scribes and then you have the Pharisees.

01:52.120 --> 01:56.040
But here's the thing. When it comes to the scribes as compared to the Pharisees,

01:56.160 --> 01:59.080
the scribes was actually somewhat of a legitimate office

01:59.080 --> 02:02.700
that had somewhat of a practical function behind it.

02:03.260 --> 02:08.360
The Pharisees did it. There's no need for Pharisees in the Bible at all.

02:08.480 --> 02:12.560
There was no practical functionality when it came to the office of a Pharisee.

02:13.400 --> 02:15.900
In fact, you could scour the Old Testament.

02:16.400 --> 02:18.380
You'll never find a mention of Pharisees, right?

02:18.380 --> 02:23.380
You'll never find a mention of God's sanctioning Pharisees or deigning Pharisees.

02:24.220 --> 02:27.380
Now, you do find the office of a Sadducee because the Sadducee

02:28.060 --> 02:33.760
were essentially the ones responsible for the tasks of the temple.

02:35.020 --> 02:40.300
They're the sons of Zadok and they're the ones who are essentially carrying out the duties of the temple.

02:40.420 --> 02:42.620
So that is a legitimate office.

02:42.880 --> 02:46.100
That was a legitimate responsibility that they were supposed to uphold.

02:46.100 --> 02:51.080
Now, obviously, we can see the Sadducees in the New Testament and they're apostate.

02:51.560 --> 02:56.640
So even though it's a legitimate office, even though God sanctioned it in the Old Testament,

02:57.060 --> 03:00.240
by the time we get to the New, they've already gone apostate.

03:00.780 --> 03:01.460
How do we know that?

03:01.700 --> 03:05.460
Because they're denying angels and demons. They're denying the resurrection.

03:06.220 --> 03:11.360
So even though God sanctioned for that specific office to be held in Israel

03:11.360 --> 03:13.220
to oversee the duties of the temple,

03:13.620 --> 03:18.900
by the time we get to the 1st century A.D., they've already transgressed the doctrines of Christ.

03:19.380 --> 03:22.020
They've rejected the Lord. They're super apostate.

03:22.520 --> 03:23.840
And at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter.

03:24.120 --> 03:30.280
Why? Because by the time Jesus Christ dies, the Old Testament transfers into the New.

03:30.700 --> 03:34.260
There's no longer a need for a physical temple where the Sadducees are serving

03:34.260 --> 03:38.560
because we are the temple of the Holy Ghost, which you have of God in your and not your own.

03:38.560 --> 03:42.980
We are that priesthood, that holy nation and so forth.

03:43.380 --> 03:48.400
So the Sadducees, though sanctioned in the Old Testament, it's kind of null and void in the New.

03:49.720 --> 03:52.240
Pharisees, on the other hand, you won't find that mention.

03:52.420 --> 03:55.380
Now what does Pharisee mean? It actually means the separated ones.

03:55.740 --> 04:00.120
And when you look at it from a historical perspective because you actually have to go to history

04:00.120 --> 04:03.360
to find the origins of a Pharisee because you're not going to find it in the Bible.

04:03.940 --> 04:06.100
It's like you're reading throughout the entire Bible.

04:06.100 --> 04:10.860
You get to the book of Matthew and you just hear Pharisees like, where do these guys come from?

04:11.560 --> 04:14.100
These guys are in charge. They're in charge of the synagogues.

04:15.440 --> 04:18.400
They have a lot of authority. They have a lot of power.

04:18.660 --> 04:22.140
They can excommunicate people. People hold them in high regard.

04:22.580 --> 04:25.960
And you kind of just want to go back in time and say, excuse me, sir, where'd you come from?

04:26.980 --> 04:29.760
Like, apparently you're like really important in the nation of Israel.

04:30.000 --> 04:34.460
But how did you gain this influence and importance to the point where, you know,

04:34.460 --> 04:38.640
people look to you as being a legitimate religious authority in the nation of Israel?

04:39.440 --> 04:42.240
Well, when you look throughout history, you see that they actually arose

04:42.240 --> 04:44.640
after what's referred to as the Maccabean Revolt.

04:44.780 --> 04:50.940
They're the second temple institution of religious zealots of Jews

04:51.300 --> 04:54.460
who are essentially trying to preserve Jewish identity.

04:55.040 --> 04:57.020
So they're trying to preserve it from Hellenization.

04:57.800 --> 05:02.340
Hellenization meaning that they didn't want Greek culture to infiltrate

05:02.340 --> 05:05.740
and they didn't want to lose their ethnic identity

05:05.740 --> 05:10.340
and essentially become obsolete as a Jewish people.

05:11.020 --> 05:15.660
So what they did is they formed this group known as the Pharisees, the separated ones,

05:16.080 --> 05:17.260
in order to preserve that.

05:17.740 --> 05:19.980
And you can think to yourself, well, that's kind of legitimate.

05:20.720 --> 05:22.660
They're trying to preserve their ethnic identity.

05:23.360 --> 05:24.260
They're in Babylon.

05:25.120 --> 05:29.240
And they're just trying to preserve what their forefathers were,

05:29.360 --> 05:31.020
what they did, their customs and so forth.

05:31.020 --> 05:34.220
And, you know, arguments can be made as to why,

05:34.340 --> 05:37.500
if it was legitimate for them to be an actual group of people

05:37.500 --> 05:39.340
that were needed in the nation of Israel.

05:39.840 --> 05:44.140
The problem is this, is that after that group arose to prominence,

05:44.460 --> 05:47.840
somewhere along the way, by the time we get to the 1st century AD,

05:48.460 --> 05:50.780
they somehow seized power over the synagogues.

05:51.540 --> 05:54.740
And the synagogues, again, are not institutions that are sanctioned by God.

05:55.120 --> 05:57.180
They're just kind of like a necessary evil.

05:57.180 --> 06:00.980
And the reason I say necessary evil is because it's really for people

06:00.980 --> 06:02.200
who can't make it to the temple.

06:02.580 --> 06:04.780
So they have these groups where they get together,

06:05.340 --> 06:08.400
they read the scriptures, they pray, they sing hymns.

06:09.120 --> 06:10.980
And so it's like a chapel, so to speak, right?

06:11.380 --> 06:12.740
You ever heard of a chapel service?

06:13.000 --> 06:14.320
It's like, those are like chapels.

06:15.000 --> 06:19.400
And so somehow the Pharisees ended up seizing power over these synagogues.

06:19.640 --> 06:21.360
And then by the time you get to the 1st century AD,

06:22.080 --> 06:25.540
the culture of synagogues and Pharisees is so embedded

06:25.540 --> 06:28.680
into the history of Israel, no one really questions

06:28.680 --> 06:31.120
whether it should be a legitimate institution.

06:31.600 --> 06:31.880
Okay?

06:32.420 --> 06:36.020
It's just kind of like accepted, these are the guys in charge.

06:36.420 --> 06:37.980
These are the ones we need to look to.

06:38.440 --> 06:40.160
We want to be a part of the synagogues,

06:40.180 --> 06:41.280
even though there's already a temple there.

06:41.900 --> 06:45.700
Because keep in mind, the synagogues were an alternative to the temple.

06:46.140 --> 06:47.720
Not a replacement for the temple,

06:48.060 --> 06:51.720
an alternative if the person could not physically make it to the temple.

06:51.720 --> 06:55.620
So it's just like, oh, we live too far to make our pilgrimage to the temple.

06:55.860 --> 06:57.400
We'll let's join the synagogue.

06:57.840 --> 06:59.380
We can hear the law of Moses and so forth.

06:59.820 --> 07:01.920
And this is why when you read the Book of Acts, for example,

07:02.400 --> 07:05.020
you'll hear about synagogues in Asia Minor

07:05.020 --> 07:07.740
and a lot of different Greek-speaking areas

07:07.740 --> 07:10.880
because these synagogues were started as an alternative

07:10.880 --> 07:14.560
for the temple if people couldn't make the pilgrimage to that temple.

07:15.120 --> 07:17.500
And so 1st century AD, you have the Pharisees.

07:17.860 --> 07:19.360
They are in charge of it.

07:19.360 --> 07:21.100
They have political power.

07:21.460 --> 07:22.480
They have religious power.

07:22.700 --> 07:27.460
And they're the ones who essentially spearheaded the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

07:28.480 --> 07:29.480
Now here's the thing though,

07:30.280 --> 07:32.720
but they have no practical functionality.

07:33.460 --> 07:36.380
There's no need for them at all within Israel.

07:37.080 --> 07:39.040
There's a need for the Sadducees,

07:39.140 --> 07:41.800
even though they suck and they're apostate,

07:42.580 --> 07:43.580
but it's okay.

07:43.720 --> 07:45.040
They're going to go away soon.

07:45.940 --> 07:48.340
But there is some sort of need for them

07:48.340 --> 07:50.320
because God needed someone.

07:50.840 --> 07:53.300
He sanctioned people to oversee the temple, you understand?

07:53.840 --> 07:55.700
Whereas the Pharisees are like, you guys are here

07:55.700 --> 07:59.600
and all you guys are doing is just lording over the flock of God.

08:00.140 --> 08:02.020
You're just kind of, you know,

08:02.460 --> 08:05.360
just kind of usurping authority, hating on Christ,

08:05.800 --> 08:08.220
trying to undermine biblical authority,

08:09.000 --> 08:11.080
teaching for doctrines, the commandments of men,

08:11.540 --> 08:12.740
just perverting scripture.

08:12.740 --> 08:15.960
You hate God's people, you know?

08:16.040 --> 08:16.980
And at the end of the day,

08:17.240 --> 08:20.980
the Pharisees ended up being the progenitors to modern-day rabbinic Judaism.

08:21.720 --> 08:22.200
Okay?

08:23.320 --> 08:25.780
So, you know, you have the Sadducees

08:25.780 --> 08:27.400
and once the temple was destroyed in 70 AD,

08:27.840 --> 08:28.640
they're out of a job.

08:29.100 --> 08:30.640
Like there's no more temple, right?

08:31.120 --> 08:32.860
So either get with the program, become a Christian,

08:33.040 --> 08:34.820
or just join the Pharisees.

08:34.820 --> 08:37.100
Because the Pharisees didn't really need the temple

08:37.560 --> 08:41.460
in order to function as a group of religious Pharisees, right?

08:41.460 --> 08:43.340
Judaism doesn't really need the temple.

08:43.900 --> 08:45.480
Because after the temple was destroyed,

08:45.800 --> 08:46.880
they can simply go into what?

08:47.160 --> 08:50.980
Their synagogues and just continue with their authority,

08:51.380 --> 08:52.500
ruling over the people.

08:53.160 --> 08:56.480
And that's why Judaism ended up evolving into what we have today

08:56.480 --> 08:58.380
because of the Pharisees.

08:58.700 --> 08:58.740
Okay?

08:59.340 --> 09:03.400
So they have no practical, you know, functionality to them.

09:03.500 --> 09:04.960
There's no need for them whatsoever

09:04.960 --> 09:08.260
other than what they did after, you know,

09:08.260 --> 09:10.740
the Second Temple and the Maccabean Revolt

09:10.740 --> 09:12.400
to preserve Jewish identity.

09:12.880 --> 09:14.220
But after that, there's no need for them.

09:15.020 --> 09:17.200
Now, the scribes, it could be said the same thing

09:17.200 --> 09:20.220
of the scribes that it wasn't an office

09:20.220 --> 09:21.520
that was instituted by God,

09:21.800 --> 09:24.860
but it did serve some sort of practical functionality.

09:25.740 --> 09:25.900
Why?

09:26.200 --> 09:29.140
Because a scribe, and we're just talking about generally

09:29.140 --> 09:30.040
what a scribe is.

09:30.140 --> 09:33.320
A scribe is someone who is a copyist, okay?

09:33.780 --> 09:34.640
They are a recorder.

09:34.760 --> 09:35.720
They're like a secretary.

09:36.620 --> 09:38.460
And not even in religious matters.

09:38.620 --> 09:41.860
It could be for, you know, governments

09:41.860 --> 09:45.760
and magistrates if they need to copy documents,

09:46.920 --> 09:47.300
genealogies.

09:47.880 --> 09:50.900
These are people who are very skilled in writing

09:51.460 --> 09:52.500
because you've got to keep in mind,

09:52.780 --> 09:54.180
you know, a lot of people back in those days

09:54.180 --> 09:55.380
didn't know how to read or write.

09:56.100 --> 09:58.200
Now, I'm not going to ask for a raise of hands,

09:58.900 --> 10:01.620
but I'm assuming a lot of you know how to read and write,

10:01.760 --> 10:04.280
at least, you know, read the Bible, okay?

10:04.280 --> 10:06.920
You know, I can read, I can write.

10:07.400 --> 10:08.660
Now, I do write like a doctor

10:08.660 --> 10:10.080
and you can't really understand my penmanship

10:10.080 --> 10:11.560
and I'm working on that.

10:12.060 --> 10:15.040
But, you know, the ability to read and write

10:15.040 --> 10:16.920
wasn't as prevalent back then as it is now.

10:17.520 --> 10:20.560
So, you have these scribes who were very skilled

10:20.560 --> 10:25.080
in reading, writing, and copying accurately.

10:25.460 --> 10:26.380
Very important, right?

10:26.560 --> 10:27.660
They didn't have a copy machine.

10:28.220 --> 10:29.240
They didn't have a printer.

10:29.920 --> 10:33.320
They needed literal people to get the scriptures

10:33.320 --> 10:35.800
and they would just copy it over and over again.

10:36.240 --> 10:39.620
It's a very functional office, very needed, right?

10:40.200 --> 10:41.760
Now, transfer that over to the Bible.

10:42.260 --> 10:44.900
It's very needed when it comes to the scriptures, okay?

10:46.380 --> 10:48.420
So, you have these scribes

10:48.420 --> 10:50.580
who are assigned to governments and magistrates

10:50.580 --> 10:53.320
in order to copy documents, legal things and such,

10:53.540 --> 10:55.780
but then you also have scribes

10:55.780 --> 10:58.700
who serve the purpose of dictating

10:58.700 --> 11:01.920
or writing down what the prophet is dictating.

11:02.420 --> 11:04.900
So, the prophet who is inspired by God

11:04.900 --> 11:07.600
to preach the word of God, he's ripping face

11:07.600 --> 11:09.360
and the scribe is just like, you know,

11:09.880 --> 11:11.900
all right, oh man, whore, okay?

11:12.360 --> 11:15.120
All right, you know, okay, whoa, you know?

11:15.380 --> 11:16.640
And he's pending that down.

11:16.740 --> 11:19.700
He's transcribing what the prophet is saying.

11:20.380 --> 11:21.740
Very much needed, right?

11:22.280 --> 11:23.540
So, you could even say that, you know,

11:23.600 --> 11:27.320
some scribes are providentially inspired by God

11:27.320 --> 11:29.200
because they've got to be accurate in their,

11:29.200 --> 11:32.160
you know, preservation of the words of the prophet

11:32.160 --> 11:33.840
that is coming from God, okay?

11:34.500 --> 11:36.760
But then, you also have other scribes

11:36.760 --> 11:39.160
who are simply responsible for copying the Bible,

11:39.860 --> 11:41.380
okay, which is also important.

11:41.740 --> 11:45.300
So, you have the prophet, he preaches the word of God,

11:45.440 --> 11:47.200
the scribe pens it down, and then you have

11:47.200 --> 11:48.880
another scribe whose responsibility

11:48.880 --> 11:50.980
is just to copy that thing over and over again

11:50.980 --> 11:54.040
so that people can have copies of the word of God, okay?

11:54.420 --> 11:57.900
You think of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter 8

11:57.900 --> 12:00.220
when he leaves Jerusalem, he has a copy

12:00.220 --> 12:02.020
of a chapter of the book of Isaiah.

12:02.240 --> 12:02.840
How did he get that?

12:02.920 --> 12:03.400
I'll tell you how.

12:03.700 --> 12:06.060
There was a scribe who penned that down

12:06.460 --> 12:08.780
and then sold that copy, you understand?

12:09.200 --> 12:10.560
So, you can see how important that is

12:10.560 --> 12:11.680
in the nation of Israel.

12:12.020 --> 12:14.120
So, yeah, it's not necessarily an office

12:14.120 --> 12:15.260
that was sanctioned by God,

12:15.600 --> 12:18.400
but it was very much a necessary function

12:18.400 --> 12:21.200
in the nation of Israel because we need the word of God,

12:21.520 --> 12:23.100
people want a copy of the scriptures,

12:23.520 --> 12:25.620
and it's important to just be accurate

12:25.620 --> 12:27.280
when you're copying them down.

12:27.280 --> 12:30.100
So, you know, there's a lot of good scribes in the Bible.

12:30.800 --> 12:32.340
Now, if we were to just have the New Testament

12:32.340 --> 12:33.600
and be like, man, all scribes are bad,

12:33.700 --> 12:36.360
like these guys are just conspiring against Christ

12:36.360 --> 12:37.500
or against Christianity,

12:37.860 --> 12:40.180
but they didn't start off that way, okay?

12:41.320 --> 12:43.960
Now, the first time a scribe is mentioned in the Bible

12:43.960 --> 12:47.220
is actually in 2 Samuel chapter 8, all right?

12:47.600 --> 12:52.080
Sarah Aya is a scribe under the rule of King David.

12:52.380 --> 12:54.080
That is the first time a scribe is mentioned.

12:54.180 --> 12:55.980
It doesn't mean that that's the first scribe there is.

12:55.980 --> 12:59.340
It's just the first scribe that is talked about in the Bible.

12:59.700 --> 13:01.400
Because, again, you have people in the Old Testament

13:01.400 --> 13:03.100
who probably have this job.

13:03.240 --> 13:04.760
They're copying the word of God and so forth.

13:05.320 --> 13:07.400
Look at Jeremiah chapter 36, if you would,

13:07.920 --> 13:09.300
and verse 13, it says,

13:09.860 --> 13:14.640
then Micaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard

13:14.640 --> 13:18.180
when Beirut read the book in the ears of the people.

13:18.660 --> 13:20.620
Therefore, all the princes sent Jehudai,

13:21.080 --> 13:23.600
the son of Nathanaim, the son of Shalamaya,

13:23.600 --> 13:26.060
the son of Kushai, unto Beirut saying,

13:26.320 --> 13:29.420
take in thine hand the role wherein that has read

13:29.420 --> 13:30.700
in the ears of the people and come.

13:31.040 --> 13:32.120
So Beirut, the son of Nathanaim,

13:32.520 --> 13:35.360
took the role in his hand and came unto them.

13:35.440 --> 13:38.360
So we see that Beirut is not only responsible

13:38.360 --> 13:39.520
for penning down the Scriptures,

13:40.300 --> 13:42.860
he also has the skill of reading the Scriptures, right?

13:43.780 --> 13:46.520
Skip down to verse number 16.

13:47.440 --> 13:50.020
It says, now it came to pass when they had heard all the words.

13:50.460 --> 13:52.280
They were afraid both one and another

13:52.280 --> 13:55.680
and said unto Beirut, we will surely tell the king

13:55.680 --> 13:56.740
of all these words.

13:57.340 --> 13:59.660
And they asked Beirut saying, tell us now,

14:00.060 --> 14:03.040
how does thou write all these words at his mouth?

14:03.320 --> 14:04.660
So they're like, so tell us.

14:05.180 --> 14:07.300
You know, you're reading the words of Jeremiah the prophet,

14:07.860 --> 14:08.740
how did you do that?

14:09.080 --> 14:10.280
How did you get this?

14:11.340 --> 14:13.240
All right, you guys ready for the process here?

14:13.640 --> 14:16.440
Verse number 17 or verse 18,

14:16.880 --> 14:17.900
then Beirut answered them,

14:18.380 --> 14:20.440
he pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth

14:20.440 --> 14:22.360
and I wrote them down in the ink of the book.

14:23.880 --> 14:25.940
Now, I don't know if he's just being facetious

14:25.940 --> 14:28.000
or whatever, he's just like, well, get this.

14:28.560 --> 14:30.720
He spoke it and I just wrote it down.

14:31.840 --> 14:33.000
Big wow, right?

14:33.840 --> 14:35.720
But this is showing us the responsibility

14:35.720 --> 14:37.840
of this important scribe here

14:37.840 --> 14:41.560
is that Jeremiah is preaching the word of God

14:41.560 --> 14:42.340
and he's penning them down.

14:42.740 --> 14:45.200
Now, there are instances in the Bible

14:45.200 --> 14:48.120
where the Scriptures were recorded as such,

14:48.740 --> 14:51.100
meaning that a prophet preached

14:51.100 --> 14:55.540
and there was a scribe there alongside that prophet,

14:55.680 --> 14:58.860
such as Beirut, who actually penned down what was being said.

14:59.160 --> 15:00.760
But not all the time, okay?

15:01.680 --> 15:03.140
Because, you know, sometimes people think,

15:03.260 --> 15:05.420
well, you know, someone was following Matthew around

15:06.080 --> 15:08.700
and Mark and Luke and as they were, you know,

15:08.960 --> 15:11.680
as Jesus was, or excuse me, not following Matthew,

15:11.900 --> 15:13.580
Matthew was following Jesus around,

15:13.980 --> 15:15.200
Luke was following Jesus around,

15:15.200 --> 15:16.480
and as he was preaching,

15:16.740 --> 15:18.600
they're just painting this down from around the corner.

15:19.520 --> 15:20.600
You see, do people really believe that?

15:20.700 --> 15:22.580
I mean, that's what that stupid show is showing.

15:23.120 --> 15:25.860
The chosen shows, like Matthew around the corner or John,

15:26.300 --> 15:27.580
he's like in some dark corner

15:28.180 --> 15:30.260
as Jesus is preaching to Nicodemus

15:30.260 --> 15:32.220
and he's just like, oh, this is good, you know?

15:33.100 --> 15:34.180
But no, that's not what happened.

15:34.800 --> 15:38.620
And in the minds of these scholars, modern-day scholars,

15:39.020 --> 15:40.720
they think that's how it had to happen

15:40.720 --> 15:42.240
because in their minds, like, well,

15:42.240 --> 15:44.880
in order to have an accurate translation,

15:45.280 --> 15:47.640
in order to have an accurate depiction of what's being said,

15:47.980 --> 15:49.340
the person had to be present.

15:49.700 --> 15:51.200
Well, no, because at the end of the day,

15:51.520 --> 15:54.140
all scripture is given by inspiration of God,

15:54.820 --> 15:56.680
meaning that holy men of God is fake

15:56.680 --> 15:57.820
as they're removed by the Holy Ghost,

15:58.080 --> 16:00.320
meaning that someone can preach a sermon

16:00.320 --> 16:02.520
and then years later,

16:02.920 --> 16:06.460
God can supernaturally impose the content of that sermon

16:06.460 --> 16:08.680
in the mind of the person who's writing it down

16:08.680 --> 16:10.320
and he can be accurate when he writes it.

16:11.460 --> 16:14.160
Well, I don't know if John really wrote John.

16:14.880 --> 16:15.400
Who cares?

16:16.220 --> 16:18.060
Now, I do believe that John wrote John.

16:18.920 --> 16:21.340
I believe Matthew wrote Matthew, you know,

16:21.640 --> 16:24.460
but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter

16:24.460 --> 16:25.460
because at the end of the day,

16:25.560 --> 16:27.740
the actual person itself doesn't matter.

16:28.800 --> 16:30.430
Now, to the unsaved scholar

16:30.860 --> 16:32.840
who knows more Bible than you and me, apparently,

16:33.860 --> 16:36.760
because they're resting their faith upon history,

16:37.100 --> 16:38.360
that is important because what?

16:38.360 --> 16:40.380
Because they want to make sure that the apostles

16:40.380 --> 16:42.500
were the only ones responsible for writing down scripture,

16:42.800 --> 16:44.820
but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter

16:44.820 --> 16:46.460
because who's the author, Scott?

16:47.660 --> 16:48.040
And you know what?

16:48.140 --> 16:50.720
God can supernaturally take the content

16:50.720 --> 16:53.640
that he places in the mind of a prophet

16:53.640 --> 16:56.280
and then supernaturally place it in the heart

16:56.280 --> 16:59.000
and in the mind of a writer who's unknown,

16:59.580 --> 17:02.560
unnamed and be accurate in his transcription.

17:04.700 --> 17:07.140
Obviously, he's going to write it with his personality,

17:07.140 --> 17:10.680
his writing style, but whatever it is that God says

17:10.680 --> 17:12.600
is going to go down on that, you know,

17:13.360 --> 17:15.260
that piece of paper, not paper, but you know,

17:15.640 --> 17:17.580
that animal skin or whatever, that parchment.

17:18.460 --> 17:21.740
The point being here is that we have an example of Beirut

17:21.740 --> 17:24.420
who, yeah, you know, he did pen down the scriptures,

17:24.580 --> 17:26.320
but let me just remind you later on,

17:26.580 --> 17:28.020
those scriptures are thrown into the fire.

17:29.020 --> 17:30.960
But it doesn't mean those scriptures are not preserved

17:30.960 --> 17:33.840
because they're rewritten again, you know,

17:33.980 --> 17:34.500
and so forth.

17:34.500 --> 17:36.820
And so it's important for us to realize that Scribes,

17:37.140 --> 17:39.020
you know, they did play an important role,

17:39.160 --> 17:41.460
as noted here, that, you know,

17:41.640 --> 17:43.240
he is following the prophet,

17:43.740 --> 17:45.120
he's writing down the scriptures,

17:45.840 --> 17:48.140
he's accurately depicting what is being said,

17:48.400 --> 17:51.140
and even though Beirut is a sinner like everyone else,

17:51.640 --> 17:54.800
you know, God is supernaturally leading him

17:54.800 --> 17:58.080
to write down what needs to be put in the Word of God.

17:58.360 --> 17:58.500
Okay?

17:58.940 --> 18:00.540
Now go to Ezra chapter 7, if you would.

18:00.540 --> 18:01.640
Ezra chapter 7.

18:02.900 --> 18:04.020
Ezra chapter 7.

18:04.400 --> 18:07.860
So in the Old Testament, Scribes played a functional role.

18:08.100 --> 18:09.280
They were godly people.

18:09.800 --> 18:11.260
They were righteous individuals.

18:11.880 --> 18:13.140
They played a necessary role.

18:13.220 --> 18:15.960
Even though it wasn't an office that was sanctioned by God,

18:16.600 --> 18:19.180
you know, they did a lot of great works.

18:19.440 --> 18:20.580
God used them in a great way.

18:20.980 --> 18:23.020
And in fact, if you remember back in Matthew 23,

18:23.700 --> 18:24.520
what does Jesus say?

18:24.780 --> 18:27.700
I sentence you wise men and Scribes.

18:28.520 --> 18:31.660
So keep in mind that a scribe, you know, in the Bible,

18:32.600 --> 18:33.800
even in the Old Testament,

18:34.400 --> 18:36.660
is not just someone who just writes down the Bible

18:37.660 --> 18:38.940
and does nothing else.

18:39.400 --> 18:41.700
Because we have an example here of Ezra,

18:42.460 --> 18:45.240
who is a scribe, but he's also a priest.

18:46.300 --> 18:49.020
So this is showing us that just about anybody

18:49.020 --> 18:50.840
who can read and write can be a scribe,

18:51.240 --> 18:54.560
whether it's a priest, maybe it's a high priest,

18:54.560 --> 18:58.940
it's a prophet, it's just some regular Joe Shmo in the Old Testament.

18:59.440 --> 19:01.460
If they have this capability, they can do so.

19:01.560 --> 19:06.920
But Ezra is an example of someone who actually knew how to read.

19:07.100 --> 19:08.680
He knew how to write, but he was also a high priest.

19:08.820 --> 19:11.680
Look at verse 7, or verse 6, excuse me, of Ezra 7.

19:11.820 --> 19:14.180
It says, this Ezra went up from Babylon

19:14.720 --> 19:18.140
and he was already scribe in the law of Moses,

19:18.420 --> 19:20.560
which the Lord God of Israel had given

19:20.560 --> 19:24.280
and the king granted him all his requests according to the hand

19:24.280 --> 19:26.960
of the Lord his God that was upon him.

19:27.060 --> 19:29.980
So here we see that Ezra, though he's a high priest,

19:30.180 --> 19:32.820
though he's a priest, he is a ready scribe.

19:33.060 --> 19:33.520
Now what does that mean?

19:33.840 --> 19:35.780
It doesn't mean that he's just ready to write things down.

19:36.200 --> 19:38.520
This is referring to the fact that although he's a scribe

19:38.520 --> 19:41.760
who copies, he writes things down with accuracy,

19:42.320 --> 19:45.760
he's also someone who's ready to describe and teach

19:45.760 --> 19:47.440
what's in the Word of God.

19:47.440 --> 19:50.060
So we see here that this became, you know,

19:50.120 --> 19:52.180
the scribe ended up being a transitional office

19:52.180 --> 19:54.260
where they're not just penning down the scriptures,

19:54.280 --> 19:56.100
but they're also teaching them.

19:56.600 --> 20:00.080
And this is just the natural flow of things, is it not?

20:00.400 --> 20:01.860
If you're constantly writing something down,

20:02.520 --> 20:05.160
you're constantly writing that down over and over again,

20:05.500 --> 20:07.860
you're eventually going to memorize what's being written down,

20:08.160 --> 20:12.120
you're eventually going to internalize that which is being written down,

20:12.380 --> 20:14.580
and you're going to end up studying that which is being written down.

20:15.080 --> 20:17.360
Because folks, you know, the more you write something down

20:17.980 --> 20:19.740
over and over and over again,

20:19.860 --> 20:21.080
the more it's just going to be internalized

20:21.080 --> 20:21.980
and you're going to think about it.

20:22.500 --> 20:24.300
That's why I don't remember any phone number anymore.

20:26.540 --> 20:28.940
I literally just started memorizing

20:28.940 --> 20:30.700
my wife's phone number recently, you know what I mean?

20:30.760 --> 20:33.800
Just because, you know, I think I just needed to for some reason.

20:33.960 --> 20:35.480
I'm like, do I know my wife's number?

20:35.660 --> 20:36.880
I'm like, I don't think I know her, you know?

20:37.260 --> 20:40.400
Just because I'm so accustomed to just calling someone on the phone.

20:40.900 --> 20:41.780
But let me tell you something,

20:41.780 --> 20:45.100
when I was eight years old though, you know,

20:45.200 --> 20:46.580
my memory was keen.

20:46.940 --> 20:49.500
I had a lot of phone numbers memorized,

20:49.920 --> 20:51.560
you know, because we'd write them down,

20:51.780 --> 20:53.740
we'd mark them on the phone all the time.

20:54.160 --> 20:55.540
Now we don't mark numbers, what do we do?

20:55.660 --> 20:57.920
We just like call so, we don't even like dial,

20:58.080 --> 20:59.320
we don't even press a button to, you know,

20:59.520 --> 21:02.160
we just say, hey Siri, call so and so, you know,

21:02.420 --> 21:03.700
and it just calls them, right?

21:04.400 --> 21:07.200
And so, you know, the more you mark down those numbers,

21:07.960 --> 21:10.460
the more you write it down, the more you're constantly,

21:10.460 --> 21:12.700
it's before you, the more it's just going to be internalized.

21:13.000 --> 21:14.560
And if you ask my wife right now, like,

21:14.620 --> 21:16.160
hey, what was your phone number as a child?

21:16.260 --> 21:17.620
She'll be able to tell you what the phone number was.

21:18.740 --> 21:19.760
She remembers that.

21:19.860 --> 21:21.640
And I'm sure some of you can probably do so the same.

21:22.240 --> 21:23.980
Same thing with addresses, right?

21:25.020 --> 21:27.640
You know, some addresses, they just kind of stay in your mind.

21:27.940 --> 21:31.400
You know, but nowadays people don't really know addresses,

21:32.040 --> 21:33.340
you know, because of GPS.

21:34.240 --> 21:36.460
You know, some of you, if your phone was removed

21:36.460 --> 21:38.800
from your pocket, you wouldn't be able to make it to church.

21:41.040 --> 21:42.580
No joke, you know that's true.

21:43.060 --> 21:45.720
If there was, if you had no phone

21:46.840 --> 21:50.020
and you were expected to be in church,

21:50.780 --> 21:51.680
you'd freak out.

21:53.260 --> 21:54.680
You're like, I don't know where I'm going.

21:55.000 --> 21:56.720
You know, just because you require GPS,

21:57.420 --> 21:59.440
you just mark it in and you just follow that blue line,

21:59.520 --> 22:01.380
it can lead you off a cliff and you would go off a cliff.

22:02.660 --> 22:04.800
It can lead you to a liberal church

22:05.440 --> 22:07.880
and you would freaking go to that liberal church

22:07.880 --> 22:10.020
because you're so reliant upon that.

22:10.500 --> 22:13.220
You know, if I were to just place you anywhere

22:13.220 --> 22:14.880
in Southern California without a phone,

22:15.020 --> 22:16.400
you probably wouldn't be able to find your way home.

22:16.980 --> 22:18.200
You probably don't know your freeways.

22:19.060 --> 22:20.940
You know, you're like, what's a 7-10?

22:21.220 --> 22:22.360
You know, what's a 22?

22:23.300 --> 22:24.420
I don't know what that is.

22:25.520 --> 22:27.200
But it's because of the fact that technology

22:27.200 --> 22:28.500
obviously has done that to us.

22:29.040 --> 22:30.620
When, you know, in times past,

22:31.000 --> 22:32.700
analog was more of an important thing

22:32.700 --> 22:33.960
and people would write things down.

22:33.960 --> 22:37.340
I mean, I remember like my mom, for example,

22:37.840 --> 22:39.240
would give me an address

22:39.240 --> 22:40.940
and she'd just write it down on an envelope

22:41.580 --> 22:42.940
and she'd be like, just go here.

22:43.200 --> 22:44.500
You know, this is this street right here.

22:44.620 --> 22:45.880
Or if she couldn't remember the street,

22:46.020 --> 22:48.860
like there's a tree, there's a store that says this

22:48.860 --> 22:51.540
and you're like a pirate, you know, just looking for treasure.

22:53.120 --> 22:55.280
You know, and I remember just like

22:55.280 --> 22:59.700
in the early 2010s, okay, using MapQuest.

23:00.140 --> 23:02.660
You know, printing out MapQuest

23:02.660 --> 23:04.760
and being in an old IP church

23:04.760 --> 23:06.620
having to visit new people

23:06.620 --> 23:09.820
and I have like 10 sheets of MapQuest

23:09.820 --> 23:12.200
and I'm just like, you know, where am I going here?

23:12.340 --> 23:14.460
You know, and just trying to find the address or whatnot.

23:14.860 --> 23:16.940
And so obviously a lot of people are spoiled now

23:16.940 --> 23:17.960
because of GPS.

23:18.160 --> 23:19.320
But the point that I'm making here

23:19.320 --> 23:21.240
is the more you use something,

23:21.440 --> 23:22.740
the more it becomes internalized.

23:23.380 --> 23:25.280
So you have these scribes

23:25.280 --> 23:28.400
whose job is it to just write down the Old Testament,

23:28.780 --> 23:30.080
write down the Book of Leviticus,

23:30.360 --> 23:31.620
write down Deuteronomy

23:31.620 --> 23:33.640
over and over and over again,

23:33.800 --> 23:34.540
what's going to happen?

23:34.700 --> 23:36.640
They're going to end up internalizing that.

23:37.000 --> 23:38.400
Why? Because they're constantly reading it.

23:39.140 --> 23:41.440
Side note here, this is why it's important

23:41.440 --> 23:42.880
to constantly read the Bible.

23:43.600 --> 23:45.100
You don't have to write down the Bible,

23:45.260 --> 23:47.640
though it would help to write down scriptures

23:47.640 --> 23:49.460
on a three by five

23:49.460 --> 23:51.200
and keep it with yourself

23:51.200 --> 23:52.500
and read it over and over again.

23:52.840 --> 23:54.440
But just reading the scriptures

23:54.940 --> 23:56.160
every single day,

23:56.740 --> 23:58.880
reading the Bible every single day

23:58.880 --> 24:00.880
helps you to internalize the truths of God's Word.

24:00.880 --> 24:01.960
When the Bible says,

24:02.120 --> 24:04.060
let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly,

24:04.420 --> 24:06.640
we could apply it to just reading the Bible

24:06.640 --> 24:07.780
every single day.

24:08.380 --> 24:09.520
Give attendance to reading,

24:10.020 --> 24:11.780
to exhortation, to doctrine,

24:12.220 --> 24:14.120
making sure that the Word of God

24:14.120 --> 24:16.040
is being hidden in our heart,

24:16.260 --> 24:18.340
making sure that we're thinking about the Word of God.

24:18.600 --> 24:19.260
That's so hard.

24:19.460 --> 24:21.000
Not if you read it every single day at all.

24:21.700 --> 24:23.540
And not if you read large quantities

24:23.540 --> 24:24.720
of the Bible throughout the year.

24:25.660 --> 24:26.780
On a daily basis,

24:27.200 --> 24:29.660
you end up internalizing the truths of God's Word.

24:30.200 --> 24:31.160
The Bible says,

24:31.360 --> 24:32.200
if any man speak,

24:32.340 --> 24:34.540
let him speak as the oracles of God.

24:34.900 --> 24:35.080
You're like,

24:35.100 --> 24:38.680
how can I speak about the Bible so naturally

24:38.680 --> 24:41.920
and with fluid power?

24:42.120 --> 24:42.680
How do I do that?

24:42.800 --> 24:44.400
By just reading the Bible every single day.

24:44.940 --> 24:46.060
Because as you're reading it,

24:46.240 --> 24:47.460
yeah, you're not writing it down

24:47.460 --> 24:49.180
because it's already written down for you.

24:49.660 --> 24:50.860
It's printed for you.

24:51.080 --> 24:53.800
But as you read it more and more and more,

24:54.280 --> 24:56.640
you end up embedding the content

24:56.640 --> 24:57.780
of the Bible into your heart.

24:57.780 --> 25:00.640
And so that's important.

25:00.820 --> 25:02.720
And you have Ezra here

25:02.720 --> 25:05.420
who the Bible says is a ready scribe.

25:05.460 --> 25:06.920
It doesn't mean that he's ready to pin it down.

25:07.380 --> 25:09.500
He's ready to talk about and teach

25:09.500 --> 25:10.780
what's already been pinned down.

25:12.100 --> 25:14.780
Skip down to verse number 10.

25:15.820 --> 25:15.880
It says,

25:16.020 --> 25:18.460
for Ezra had prepared his heart

25:18.460 --> 25:20.300
to seek the law of the Lord

25:20.300 --> 25:21.680
and to do it

25:21.680 --> 25:23.320
and to teach in Israel

25:23.320 --> 25:25.520
statutes and judgments.

25:25.720 --> 25:27.120
So this is a very spiritual man.

25:27.120 --> 25:29.140
He's a very spirit-filled man.

25:29.540 --> 25:31.900
Ezra is not just your run-of-the-mill scribe.

25:32.180 --> 25:33.280
He knows how to read.

25:33.700 --> 25:34.500
He knows how to write.

25:34.900 --> 25:36.980
But he also knows how to seek the Lord.

25:37.840 --> 25:40.200
He also knows how to prepare his heart

25:40.200 --> 25:41.780
to seek the Lord, right?

25:42.160 --> 25:44.680
To teach the statutes and judgments.

25:44.980 --> 25:47.740
So we have the example of Sarah Aya

25:47.740 --> 25:49.880
as being the first scribe mentioned

25:49.880 --> 25:51.500
in 2 Samuel chapter 8.

25:51.860 --> 25:53.300
You have Baruch,

25:53.880 --> 25:55.860
who is in Jeremiah,

25:55.860 --> 25:57.380
particularly in chapter 36.

25:57.560 --> 25:59.700
We have him describing the process

25:59.700 --> 26:00.880
by which he would pin down

26:00.880 --> 26:02.160
what the prophet is saying.

26:02.520 --> 26:04.800
But then we also have Ezra,

26:05.320 --> 26:06.420
who's a ready scribe,

26:06.420 --> 26:07.580
meaning that he not only knows

26:07.580 --> 26:09.400
how to keep track and records

26:09.400 --> 26:10.640
of the genealogies,

26:10.840 --> 26:13.600
keep track of all the documents

26:13.600 --> 26:15.360
of those who went into exile,

26:15.800 --> 26:17.140
but he can also get the Word of God

26:17.140 --> 26:18.800
and preach it as well.

26:19.840 --> 26:21.320
Go to Nehemiah chapter 8.

26:21.660 --> 26:22.900
Nehemiah chapter 8, if you would.

26:26.760 --> 26:28.080
Nehemiah chapter 8.

26:30.840 --> 26:31.860
Nehemiah chapter 8

26:31.860 --> 26:32.920
in verse number 1 says,

26:33.200 --> 26:34.820
And all the people gather themselves together

26:34.820 --> 26:36.540
as one man into the street

26:36.540 --> 26:37.720
that was before the water gate,

26:38.260 --> 26:40.220
and they spaken to Ezra the scribe

26:40.220 --> 26:42.380
to bring the book of the law of Moses

26:42.380 --> 26:44.060
which the Lord had commanded to Israel.

26:44.560 --> 26:46.500
And Ezra the priest brought the law

26:46.500 --> 26:47.480
before the congregation,

26:47.920 --> 26:49.460
both of men and women,

26:49.860 --> 26:52.220
and all that could hear with understanding

26:52.220 --> 26:54.100
upon the first day of the seventh month.

26:54.100 --> 26:56.640
It goes on to say in verse number 4,

26:56.740 --> 26:58.040
And Ezra the scribe stood upon

26:58.040 --> 27:00.080
a pulpit of wood which they

27:00.080 --> 27:01.200
had made for the purpose.

27:01.660 --> 27:03.900
Beside him stood Mattathiah and so forth.

27:03.980 --> 27:06.260
So we see here that when Israel

27:06.700 --> 27:08.000
wanted to hear the Word of God,

27:08.420 --> 27:10.080
who did they call? They called the ready scribe.

27:11.280 --> 27:12.640
And how can we apply this?

27:12.780 --> 27:14.700
Well, we need to make sure

27:14.700 --> 27:15.940
that we're ready scribes as well.

27:16.240 --> 27:17.960
Not necessary to pen down the scriptures

27:17.960 --> 27:18.880
because we already got it,

27:19.040 --> 27:20.160
but just be ready to teach

27:20.160 --> 27:21.140
what the Bible actually says.

27:22.020 --> 27:23.360
Meaning that you should be ready

27:23.360 --> 27:25.040
to preach the gospel at any given moment.

27:25.940 --> 27:27.300
No matter where you are,

27:27.520 --> 27:28.960
no matter who asks you,

27:29.300 --> 27:31.340
you're not like, well, let me get my tab Bible

27:31.340 --> 27:33.160
real quick. Let me make sure I get my

27:33.160 --> 27:34.820
which, you know, if you're a brand new soul winner,

27:35.300 --> 27:36.800
that's what you got to do. That's what you got to do, amen.

27:37.460 --> 27:39.100
But you want to get to the point where you

27:39.660 --> 27:40.980
use the Bible so much

27:40.980 --> 27:42.980
preaching the gospel that

27:43.420 --> 27:45.600
your Bible already kind of works with you.

27:46.260 --> 27:47.200
You know what I'm talking about?

27:47.720 --> 27:49.480
We're like, you have that soul winning Bible

27:49.480 --> 27:51.200
and you use it so much that right when you open it,

27:51.260 --> 27:52.200
it already goes to Romans 3.

27:53.000 --> 27:55.060
You know what I'm talking about? It's just like kind of already

27:56.240 --> 27:57.260
accustomed to go into

27:57.260 --> 27:59.460
Romans 3-23, Romans 6-23,

27:59.840 --> 28:02.060
Romans 5-8, it goes to Revelation 21-8,

28:02.380 --> 28:03.980
it goes to Acts 16,

28:04.380 --> 28:05.260
it goes to John 3,

28:05.740 --> 28:07.840
it's kind of like an extension of you, right?

28:08.400 --> 28:09.420
It's like already,

28:09.640 --> 28:11.060
you're like a ready scribe

28:11.060 --> 28:13.120
ready to preach the Word of God at any given moment.

28:13.440 --> 28:15.440
But you know what? That also indicates that

28:15.440 --> 28:17.020
you should be ready to preach the gospel

28:17.020 --> 28:18.340
even if you didn't have a physical Bible.

28:19.800 --> 28:20.140
Right?

28:21.020 --> 28:23.000
Be ready to give an answer

28:23.000 --> 28:25.100
always of those who are asking

28:25.100 --> 28:26.640
the faith that is in you with meekness and fear.

28:27.420 --> 28:28.460
Meaning that, you know,

28:28.780 --> 28:30.980
if you are presented

28:30.980 --> 28:32.960
with an opportunity to preach

28:32.960 --> 28:34.520
the gospel to someone, maybe not in church

28:34.520 --> 28:36.520
in a different type of atmosphere

28:36.520 --> 28:38.100
but you don't have the Word of God,

28:38.420 --> 28:39.620
you should be able to quote scripture.

28:41.060 --> 28:42.740
So yeah, you want to know how you can go to heaven

28:42.740 --> 28:45.100
when you die? I can show you, I can quote the scriptures to you.

28:45.100 --> 28:47.060
You know, this is what the Bible says

28:47.060 --> 28:49.600
and preach with confidence. That is a ready scribe.

28:49.680 --> 28:49.920
Okay?

28:50.600 --> 28:52.720
So these people are asking

28:52.720 --> 28:55.180
for the understanding

28:55.180 --> 28:56.780
of the Word of God. Look at verse 8 if you would.

28:57.560 --> 28:58.060
It says,

28:58.260 --> 28:59.560
So they read in the book

29:00.800 --> 29:02.860
in the law of God distinctly

29:02.860 --> 29:04.220
and gave the sense

29:04.220 --> 29:06.640
and caused them to understand

29:06.640 --> 29:09.180
the reading. Ezra played an important role

29:09.180 --> 29:10.880
in teaching those

29:10.880 --> 29:13.000
who came back from exile the Word of God.

29:13.000 --> 29:14.580
He was responsible

29:14.580 --> 29:15.980
for being a skilled writer,

29:16.460 --> 29:18.760
a copyist of the genealogies

29:18.760 --> 29:20.480
making sure he's checking everything

29:20.480 --> 29:21.500
to make sure it's accurate,

29:21.840 --> 29:24.040
but on top of that he was just accurate

29:24.040 --> 29:26.180
in his explanation of the Word of God

29:26.180 --> 29:27.680
and so forth. Go back to

29:27.680 --> 29:28.820
Matthew chapter 23.

29:28.960 --> 29:29.820
Matthew chapter 23.

29:32.120 --> 29:34.220
So you can see why

29:34.220 --> 29:36.100
the office of a scribe

29:36.100 --> 29:37.880
though not sanctioned by God

29:37.880 --> 29:38.920
is an important office.

29:38.920 --> 29:40.740
These are the printers

29:40.740 --> 29:42.960
of the

29:42.960 --> 29:45.360
Old Testament. These are the individuals

29:45.360 --> 29:46.800
who are making

29:46.800 --> 29:48.720
sure the Word of God is

29:48.720 --> 29:51.100
abounding in the synagogues.

29:51.440 --> 29:52.620
These are the reasons

29:52.620 --> 29:54.720
why the law of Moses

29:54.720 --> 29:57.020
is being read in Thessalonica.

29:57.440 --> 29:59.200
They're being read in Asia Minor.

29:59.680 --> 30:01.080
They're being read in various parts

30:01.080 --> 30:02.360
of the world outside of Israel

30:02.360 --> 30:04.900
because there was a ready scribe,

30:05.120 --> 30:07.080
a very skilled writer and copyist

30:07.600 --> 30:09.180
who was pinning these things down.

30:09.580 --> 30:11.300
Here you go. Here's a copy

30:11.300 --> 30:13.120
of the Word of God and so forth.

30:14.600 --> 30:17.400
So they were very much important, but here's the problem though.

30:18.860 --> 30:20.280
You have these scribes.

30:20.820 --> 30:22.040
They're pinning down the scriptures

30:22.560 --> 30:24.540
and because they're pinning them down so much

30:24.980 --> 30:26.420
they're intaking the Word of God.

30:27.360 --> 30:28.480
They're internalizing it.

30:29.160 --> 30:31.480
Now look folks, the more you read the Bible

30:31.480 --> 30:33.140
the more your faith has increased

30:33.140 --> 30:33.600
in the Bible.

30:34.720 --> 30:35.380
Faith coming

30:35.380 --> 30:36.960
by hearing, hearing by the Word of God.

30:37.660 --> 30:39.020
But what if you give the Word of God

30:39.020 --> 30:40.300
to someone who's just not saved?

30:41.800 --> 30:43.280
What if you're just giving

30:43.280 --> 30:44.380
the Word of God to someone

30:44.380 --> 30:47.180
and they're just writing it down

30:47.180 --> 30:48.960
they're pinning it down

30:48.960 --> 30:51.320
they're copying it over and over

30:51.320 --> 30:53.220
and over again, but they're just

30:53.220 --> 30:55.080
completely rejecting what's being written down.

30:55.840 --> 30:56.900
What's the danger there?

30:57.240 --> 30:58.560
Apostasy is what's the danger

30:59.200 --> 31:01.680
because this person is supposed to be a ready scribe

31:01.680 --> 31:03.020
they're internalizing the Word of God

31:03.020 --> 31:04.240
they're giving it to other people

31:04.240 --> 31:06.620
but they themselves are rejecting the Word of God.

31:07.260 --> 31:08.560
Well this is what happens

31:08.560 --> 31:10.000
by the time we get to the New Testament

31:10.740 --> 31:12.480
because by the time we get to the New Testament

31:12.480 --> 31:14.580
the office of a scribe

31:14.580 --> 31:16.480
is no longer some sort of

31:17.100 --> 31:18.980
a humble lowly position

31:19.610 --> 31:20.900
of an individual who's just skilled

31:20.900 --> 31:21.880
in reading and writing

31:22.500 --> 31:24.620
so that others may have the Word of God

31:24.620 --> 31:26.680
now they're like the upper class

31:26.680 --> 31:28.100
of scholars

31:28.100 --> 31:30.620
because by the time we get to the New Testament

31:30.620 --> 31:31.820
you hear scribes

31:31.820 --> 31:33.900
but they're not necessarily pinning anything down

31:33.900 --> 31:35.920
they're just interpreting the law for you

31:35.920 --> 31:36.740
but hold on a second

31:36.740 --> 31:39.520
you're writing the Scriptures down over and over again

31:39.520 --> 31:41.020
so why aren't you believing on Christ?

31:42.800 --> 31:43.360
You're like

31:43.360 --> 31:44.740
you're writing it down

31:44.740 --> 31:46.220
you're writing the prophecies

31:46.220 --> 31:47.840
it's right before you

31:47.840 --> 31:49.740
but then Jesus the Word of God

31:49.740 --> 31:51.500
in the flesh comes to you

31:51.500 --> 31:53.320
and now you're conspiring to kill him

31:54.140 --> 31:55.200
this is an example

31:55.200 --> 31:56.700
of someone who has the Word of God

31:57.280 --> 31:59.040
they possess the Word of God

31:59.040 --> 32:00.540
but they don't possess salvation

32:02.960 --> 32:04.580
so the point that I want to make

32:04.580 --> 32:06.600
aside from what we're going to look at

32:06.600 --> 32:07.460
here in Matthew 23

32:08.840 --> 32:11.360
is that just because God uses

32:11.360 --> 32:12.280
a group of people

32:14.340 --> 32:15.820
to preserve the Bible

32:16.440 --> 32:17.660
to pass it down

32:17.660 --> 32:18.360
to generations

32:18.360 --> 32:20.740
it doesn't lend veracity to the righteousness

32:20.740 --> 32:22.120
of that group of people

32:23.060 --> 32:24.200
look scribes

32:24.200 --> 32:26.000
thank God for the scribes amen

32:26.740 --> 32:27.680
scribes of the Old Testament

32:27.680 --> 32:30.980
great job, thank you for preserving the Old Testament

32:30.980 --> 32:32.700
thank you for doing a good job

32:32.700 --> 32:33.740
for being spear filled

32:34.520 --> 32:35.600
great job

32:35.600 --> 32:37.080
but hold on a second

32:37.080 --> 32:39.900
once you begin to deviate from the Bible

32:39.900 --> 32:41.420
that you've copied

32:41.420 --> 32:44.660
that you have accurately interpreted

32:44.660 --> 32:46.600
or accurately copied

32:46.600 --> 32:48.640
and then you actually reject the Gospel

32:49.840 --> 32:51.320
I have no need for you anymore

32:53.540 --> 32:54.740
because now a printer

32:54.740 --> 32:56.000
can do exactly what you're doing

32:57.620 --> 32:58.500
and just because

32:58.500 --> 32:59.680
they were used to preserve it

32:59.680 --> 33:01.540
just because they copied it a hundred times over

33:01.540 --> 33:03.720
doesn't mean anything if you rejected the Christ

33:05.240 --> 33:05.680
now

33:05.680 --> 33:07.620
how do we interpret this

33:07.620 --> 33:09.940
how can we apply this today

33:11.120 --> 33:12.660
well Matthew 23

33:12.660 --> 33:14.260
is a major condemnation

33:14.260 --> 33:15.800
of both scribes and Pharisees

33:15.800 --> 33:18.140
and if we were to compare

33:18.140 --> 33:19.320
who the Pharisees were

33:19.320 --> 33:20.160
to people today

33:20.160 --> 33:22.560
we would say the Pharisees are like Catholics

33:23.840 --> 33:25.160
because they teach for doctrines

33:25.160 --> 33:26.160
the commandments of men

33:26.160 --> 33:28.540
they wear the long robes

33:29.320 --> 33:31.240
they have to be called father

33:32.380 --> 33:34.020
we're going to go through these passages

33:34.020 --> 33:35.460
here in chapter 23

33:35.460 --> 33:36.940
and it's just like man

33:36.940 --> 33:39.160
that's like a picture perfect example

33:39.800 --> 33:41.220
of Roman Catholicism

33:42.240 --> 33:43.720
scribes are a perfect picture

33:43.720 --> 33:45.500
of Eastern Orthodoxy

33:45.500 --> 33:47.320
of the Orthodox Church

33:47.320 --> 33:49.160
so just as the Pharisees

33:49.160 --> 33:50.480
fit the description of Catholics

33:50.480 --> 33:53.000
the scribes fit the description of Orthodox people

33:53.000 --> 33:53.540
okay

33:55.160 --> 33:56.820
and when you read this you're like

33:56.820 --> 33:57.760
well they're kind of one of the same

33:57.760 --> 33:58.240
yeah amen

34:01.120 --> 34:02.240
Orthodoxy is kind of the same

34:02.240 --> 34:04.280
I know you guys are at war with one another

34:04.280 --> 34:05.860
one has a Pope one doesn't

34:05.860 --> 34:07.480
you both are heretics

34:08.080 --> 34:09.540
you both are not saved

34:09.540 --> 34:10.020
okay

34:11.300 --> 34:13.240
and you know what

34:13.240 --> 34:15.340
both of you have been used by God

34:15.340 --> 34:17.560
yes for positive things

34:17.560 --> 34:19.860
but the positive things that you've done

34:19.860 --> 34:20.960
doesn't lend veracity

34:21.320 --> 34:22.120
to your beliefs

34:23.100 --> 34:25.040
because think about Catholics for example

34:25.040 --> 34:27.500
and you know I don't hate Catholics

34:28.360 --> 34:29.480
I absolutely

34:29.480 --> 34:31.100
abhor Catholicism for sure

34:31.100 --> 34:32.440
and I'm not ashamed of that

34:32.440 --> 34:34.560
but I don't hate Catholics

34:34.560 --> 34:36.500
we win Catholics for the Lord every single week

34:38.320 --> 34:39.100
but you know

34:39.100 --> 34:40.460
they've done some good things though

34:40.880 --> 34:41.800
you know for example

34:41.800 --> 34:43.700
if you've ever been to a hospital

34:44.340 --> 34:46.580
it's likely that it was started by a Catholic

34:47.120 --> 34:47.960
so how do you know

34:48.330 --> 34:49.220
St. Mary's

34:49.700 --> 34:51.720
St. Jude's

34:51.720 --> 34:53.660
a lot of these hospitals

34:54.120 --> 34:55.220
were started by Catholics

34:56.100 --> 34:57.780
did you guys know that? I hope you know that

34:58.330 --> 34:59.540
unless you're illiterate or something

35:00.240 --> 35:02.500
that's an interesting name for a hospital

35:02.500 --> 35:02.880
I want to

35:02.880 --> 35:02.920
you know

35:02.920 --> 35:06.000
no it's part of you know

35:06.000 --> 35:06.980
they give to charity

35:06.980 --> 35:08.360
they start these hospitals

35:08.360 --> 35:10.220
you know as a kid I was stitched up

35:10.220 --> 35:12.660
in a Catholic hospital

35:12.660 --> 35:14.840
a lot of babies were born in Catholic hospitals

35:14.840 --> 35:18.020
now I was born in a Presbyterian hospital

35:18.020 --> 35:19.800
so at least I have that going for me

35:19.800 --> 35:20.640
in that regard you know

35:21.300 --> 35:23.080
but you know they started a lot of hospitals

35:23.080 --> 35:25.480
and you know that's something Catholics like to point to

35:26.400 --> 35:28.360
you know how many hospitals we started

35:29.320 --> 35:29.900
you know

35:29.900 --> 35:31.740
Catholics are responsible for

35:32.380 --> 35:33.500
giving you know

35:33.500 --> 35:34.840
millions of dollars to charity

35:34.840 --> 35:37.360
and starting hundreds of hospitals

35:37.840 --> 35:39.060
and it's like oh so that just

35:39.060 --> 35:41.100
automatically lends veracity to your institution

35:41.100 --> 35:42.180
no it doesn't

35:42.180 --> 35:45.140
because we don't look at what they've done

35:45.140 --> 35:47.280
to demonstrate whether they're saved or not

35:47.280 --> 35:48.560
we look at what they believe

35:50.340 --> 35:51.760
because it doesn't really matter

35:52.500 --> 35:53.980
how many good works they've done

35:53.980 --> 35:55.700
it doesn't really matter

35:55.700 --> 35:57.460
how many good institutions they've started

35:57.460 --> 35:59.840
if they rejected the biblical gospel

35:59.840 --> 36:00.520
they're not saved

36:01.680 --> 36:03.220
because they're still teaching for doctrines

36:03.220 --> 36:04.000
the commandments of men

36:05.260 --> 36:07.180
and look maybe we could look at the Pharisees

36:07.180 --> 36:08.500
in the Bible and say hey but you know

36:08.500 --> 36:10.340
they kind of helped start these synagogues

36:11.200 --> 36:12.800
where people have gone to

36:12.800 --> 36:14.440
they've heard the law of Moses

36:15.200 --> 36:16.340
they're worshiping God

36:16.340 --> 36:17.940
and make no mistake about it

36:17.940 --> 36:19.980
there are people in the synagogues

36:19.980 --> 36:21.440
during this time that were saved

36:23.000 --> 36:24.500
we can point to people

36:24.500 --> 36:26.980
and instances in the book of Acts

36:26.980 --> 36:27.880
and throughout the Bible

36:27.880 --> 36:29.580
where people were saved

36:29.580 --> 36:31.260
and they were in the synagogues

36:31.260 --> 36:32.760
they were attending the synagogues

36:32.760 --> 36:35.280
because this is just an institution

36:35.280 --> 36:36.260
where they were going to

36:36.260 --> 36:38.160
where they were hearing the law of Moses

36:39.560 --> 36:40.940
a scribe came

36:40.940 --> 36:42.160
a wise man

36:42.160 --> 36:44.400
an evangelist came and won them over

36:44.400 --> 36:46.340
and they just kept attending the synagogue

36:47.800 --> 36:49.140
but here's the thing

36:49.140 --> 36:50.720
just because that happened

36:50.720 --> 36:52.500
it doesn't lend legitimacy

36:52.940 --> 36:54.060
to the Pharisee

36:55.000 --> 36:56.920
because bro is still a flaming heretic

36:57.520 --> 36:59.140
because he rejects the gospel

36:59.760 --> 37:00.880
and we need to make sure

37:00.880 --> 37:02.160
we're not respecter of people

37:02.680 --> 37:03.440
in that regard

37:04.900 --> 37:06.240
yes synagogues were started

37:06.240 --> 37:08.480
it was a great alternative in case people could

37:08.480 --> 37:09.260
make it to the temple

37:09.260 --> 37:11.680
but you know what Jesus Christ is here now

37:12.140 --> 37:13.660
the churches have been started

37:13.660 --> 37:15.860
it's time to throw out the synagogue

37:15.860 --> 37:17.840
it's time to throw out the Judaism

37:18.360 --> 37:20.120
it's time to get with the program

37:20.120 --> 37:22.680
and get with first century Christianity now

37:24.000 --> 37:25.480
I think I'm going to stick with the synagogue

37:25.480 --> 37:26.980
because that's the original

37:28.340 --> 37:29.600
that's where it all started

37:30.380 --> 37:30.940
you know

37:31.500 --> 37:32.700
but hold on a second

37:32.700 --> 37:34.300
the New Testament supersedes that though

37:35.440 --> 37:36.900
and at the end of the day

37:38.240 --> 37:39.660
upon this rock I will build

37:39.660 --> 37:40.720
my church

37:41.160 --> 37:42.240
not my synagogue

37:43.280 --> 37:43.760
okay

37:45.080 --> 37:45.860
and so

37:45.860 --> 37:48.420
you have Catholics of course

37:48.420 --> 37:49.700
they've done good things

37:50.220 --> 37:51.840
but guess what just because they've done good things

37:51.840 --> 37:52.840
means nothing

37:54.000 --> 37:56.400
because you know what the false prophet in Matthew 7

37:56.400 --> 37:57.680
did many wonderful works

37:58.980 --> 37:59.460
right

38:00.040 --> 38:01.600
he cast out devils

38:01.600 --> 38:03.220
he prophesied in his name

38:03.220 --> 38:05.040
he did many wonderful works

38:05.040 --> 38:07.800
and the Lord wasn't like oh man why didn't you mention that

38:07.800 --> 38:08.620
why didn't you say so

38:08.620 --> 38:09.760
I didn't know that

38:10.540 --> 38:11.940
get out of the way guys let him in

38:12.580 --> 38:13.920
this guy did many wonderful works

38:14.580 --> 38:16.080
he's just like and

38:17.400 --> 38:17.880
and

38:18.760 --> 38:20.800
depart from me, ye that work iniquity

38:20.800 --> 38:22.000
I never knew you

38:23.280 --> 38:25.340
because your works don't justify you

38:25.340 --> 38:26.200
in the eyes of God

38:26.900 --> 38:28.640
as demonstrated clearly by

38:28.640 --> 38:29.540
Matthew chapter 7

38:29.540 --> 38:32.460
which is funny because people use Matthew 7

38:32.460 --> 38:34.540
as a way to prove oh see

38:34.540 --> 38:35.520
belief is not enough

38:35.520 --> 38:37.360
that guy never even mentioned belief

38:38.780 --> 38:39.740
the one thing

38:39.740 --> 38:42.040
necessary to be saved is the one thing he just left out

38:42.740 --> 38:43.540
let's talk about

38:43.540 --> 38:44.580
how great he was

38:45.720 --> 38:47.460
what do we see from Matthew 7

38:47.460 --> 38:49.420
he's just a self righteous person which is exactly

38:49.420 --> 38:50.260
what the Pharisees are

38:50.260 --> 38:52.040
what does it mean to be self righteous

38:52.040 --> 38:54.780
it means that you believe you married eternal life

38:54.780 --> 38:56.520
based upon your own righteousness

38:58.320 --> 38:59.480
it's just like the guy

38:59.480 --> 39:01.440
who went down to the temple

39:01.440 --> 39:02.160
and he's praying

39:02.160 --> 39:04.340
and he's just like I thank God

39:04.340 --> 39:05.440
that I'm not as other sinners

39:06.340 --> 39:08.320
you know I fast twice in a day

39:08.320 --> 39:09.920
and you know he talks about

39:09.920 --> 39:11.500
all his exploits that he's done

39:11.980 --> 39:13.600
and the other guy went home justified

39:13.600 --> 39:14.840
rather than the other guy

39:14.840 --> 39:16.580
the other guy is in hell right now

39:17.880 --> 39:18.680
so he

39:19.500 --> 39:21.700
talk about tithing and fasting

39:21.700 --> 39:23.740
twice in a week

39:24.160 --> 39:25.860
that really didn't do him any good

39:25.860 --> 39:27.720
because works can't save you

39:29.520 --> 39:30.420
but here's the thing

39:30.420 --> 39:32.760
is that you know Orthodox they did some good things too

39:32.760 --> 39:34.320
and if we were to look at this

39:34.320 --> 39:35.520
in a carnal perspective

39:36.040 --> 39:37.240
I would even say

39:37.240 --> 39:40.060
that the Orthodox Church

39:40.060 --> 39:42.580
Eastern Orthodox probably did more good

39:43.500 --> 39:44.900
than Roman Catholicism

39:44.900 --> 39:45.520
believe it or not

39:45.520 --> 39:46.680
you're like how so

39:46.680 --> 39:49.320
well in 330 AD

39:50.200 --> 39:52.400
you know you have the Byzantine empire

39:53.200 --> 39:54.240
and they had

39:54.240 --> 39:56.500
what was called the scriptoriums

39:56.500 --> 39:58.200
in what's referred to as

39:58.200 --> 39:59.040
Constantinople

39:59.720 --> 40:02.020
and these scriptoriums existed

40:02.020 --> 40:03.940
for a thousand one hundred years

40:03.940 --> 40:05.960
up until 1453

40:05.960 --> 40:08.180
when the Ottoman Empire took over

40:08.180 --> 40:08.880
and destroyed them

40:08.880 --> 40:11.220
but you say well what's the deal with that

40:11.220 --> 40:13.340
well for those thousand one hundred years

40:13.340 --> 40:14.900
in these scriptoriums

40:14.900 --> 40:16.760
these Eastern Orthodox

40:17.740 --> 40:19.040
scribes what are they doing

40:19.040 --> 40:20.660
they're just copying the Greek New Testament

40:20.660 --> 40:21.400
over and over again

40:22.120 --> 40:24.820
just making tons of copies

40:24.820 --> 40:26.480
of the Greek New Testament

40:26.480 --> 40:28.220
and not just of the Greek New Testament

40:28.820 --> 40:30.960
also of other Greek literature

40:32.220 --> 40:32.700
sermons

40:33.780 --> 40:34.260
liturgy

40:34.820 --> 40:36.220
just all types of things

40:37.240 --> 40:38.340
hymns just whatever

40:38.340 --> 40:40.060
content that was out there during that time

40:40.060 --> 40:41.760
they were doing that in the scriptoriums

40:41.760 --> 40:44.420
but the most important thing that they were copying

40:44.920 --> 40:46.020
was the Greek New Testament

40:47.240 --> 40:47.720
so

40:48.220 --> 40:49.620
during this particular time

40:49.620 --> 40:52.440
they're copying this and they're very accurate

40:52.440 --> 40:54.460
because not only are they

40:54.460 --> 40:55.480
copying the Greek New Testament

40:55.480 --> 40:57.540
they're speaking the language of the Greek New Testament too

40:58.300 --> 40:59.760
so it's not like

41:00.940 --> 41:02.420
so and so down the road

41:02.420 --> 41:04.460
that pronounces Kini Koine

41:05.780 --> 41:06.760
I'm copying

41:06.760 --> 41:08.260
Koine Greek or something

41:08.260 --> 41:10.740
no like they're actually speaking the language

41:10.740 --> 41:12.660
they're living the language

41:12.660 --> 41:14.720
they're communing with people

41:14.720 --> 41:16.080
in Kini Greek

41:16.080 --> 41:17.940
like they're very much

41:17.940 --> 41:20.020
involved in the language of that day

41:20.020 --> 41:21.540
so that when they're copying

41:21.540 --> 41:23.940
the Greek New Testament in these scriptoriums

41:23.940 --> 41:24.740
it's accurate

41:25.760 --> 41:27.760
and they have a thousand one hundred years

41:27.760 --> 41:29.940
of just constantly

41:29.940 --> 41:31.180
copying constantly copying

41:31.180 --> 41:33.760
and you know what? Praise God for that

41:34.780 --> 41:35.340
right

41:35.900 --> 41:37.000
now let me tell you something though

41:37.000 --> 41:40.160
it doesn't lend veracity to orthodoxy at all

41:41.780 --> 41:43.620
because God uses evil people

41:43.620 --> 41:45.120
for his own purpose

41:46.980 --> 41:47.780
he does

41:48.420 --> 41:50.040
he used the diligence

41:50.560 --> 41:51.800
the hard work

41:52.740 --> 41:53.700
the intelligence

41:53.700 --> 41:56.040
the scholarship of orthodox

41:56.040 --> 41:57.720
for a thousand one hundred years

41:57.720 --> 42:00.120
so that when they were taken over by the Ottoman Empire

42:00.120 --> 42:02.180
they would eventually take those scriptures

42:02.180 --> 42:03.500
go to Italy

42:03.500 --> 42:05.460
it would go into the hands of Erasmus

42:05.460 --> 42:07.900
and then we would have the underlying

42:07.900 --> 42:10.360
Greek text that makes up the texas receptors

42:10.960 --> 42:12.860
which is why we have the King James Bible today

42:13.540 --> 42:14.860
and you know, riddle me this

42:14.860 --> 42:16.860
you know, if orthodoxy

42:17.380 --> 42:18.660
was so favored by God

42:18.660 --> 42:20.160
then why did God allow him to be taken over?

42:22.240 --> 42:23.280
the Ottoman Empire

42:23.280 --> 42:24.660
just destroyed them

42:25.300 --> 42:26.860
took it over, ran them out

42:26.860 --> 42:28.680
well it doesn't look like you have God's favor

42:28.680 --> 42:29.440
on your life

42:29.880 --> 42:31.600
doesn't look like God is with you

42:31.600 --> 42:33.160
because you got ran out

42:34.400 --> 42:36.120
even though you were faithfully

42:37.300 --> 42:38.660
transcribing the New Testament

42:38.660 --> 42:39.620
over and over again

42:39.620 --> 42:42.080
you know what it was, it was basically God saying

42:42.080 --> 42:43.580
alright, I think we have enough copies here

42:45.660 --> 42:46.180
right?

42:47.260 --> 42:49.680
I think that's enough

42:53.380 --> 42:55.120
got the Ottoman Empire

42:56.740 --> 42:58.440
and just destroyed them

42:58.440 --> 42:59.020
and ran them out

43:00.160 --> 43:02.020
because you know what, God uses evil people

43:02.760 --> 43:04.080
for the good

43:04.080 --> 43:05.120
sometimes of the world

43:05.120 --> 43:06.500
or just to help us

43:06.500 --> 43:09.100
because you know, Bible-believing Christians

43:09.100 --> 43:11.000
probably didn't have those resources to do that

43:12.100 --> 43:12.660
right?

43:13.200 --> 43:15.240
they don't really have the resources for that

43:15.240 --> 43:16.660
you know, and so

43:16.660 --> 43:19.060
the wealth of the wicked is laid up for the just

43:20.460 --> 43:23.120
so God will often use evil people

43:23.120 --> 43:24.800
in order to carry out his will

43:24.800 --> 43:26.960
and his will was that

43:26.960 --> 43:28.760
the Greek New Testament would be copied

43:28.760 --> 43:30.280
over and over again

43:30.280 --> 43:32.740
by these orthodox scribes

43:32.740 --> 43:35.320
accurately because he knew one day

43:35.320 --> 43:36.640
we would need

43:36.640 --> 43:36.960
a

43:38.640 --> 43:39.960
Greek New Testament

43:40.480 --> 43:42.260
the textual receptors that would make up

43:42.260 --> 43:44.780
what we have today for our King James Bible

43:44.780 --> 43:45.660
okay?

43:46.320 --> 43:48.200
and you know what, it's just like oh man

43:48.200 --> 43:49.260
they were used in such a great way

43:49.260 --> 43:52.180
God providentially used them

43:52.180 --> 43:53.420
to preserve the scriptures

43:53.420 --> 43:55.200
but once he was done with them

43:55.200 --> 43:56.120
he was done with them

43:57.000 --> 43:59.500
once he used the wisdom

43:59.500 --> 44:01.060
and the knowledge

44:01.060 --> 44:03.460
the diligence and the hard work

44:03.460 --> 44:04.940
of those orthodox scribes

44:04.940 --> 44:06.500
he's like alright, you guys are done

44:08.140 --> 44:09.820
so the point that I'm making here

44:09.820 --> 44:11.640
is that you know what, the scribes in the Old Testament

44:11.640 --> 44:13.340
they had their place, they had their role

44:13.900 --> 44:15.540
but you know we don't really need that anymore

44:15.540 --> 44:17.340
and just because they played

44:17.340 --> 44:18.840
an important role in the Old Testament

44:19.680 --> 44:21.800
doesn't lend legitimacy to their position

44:21.800 --> 44:22.340
in the New

44:22.860 --> 44:24.720
oh no, these are the scribes though

44:24.720 --> 44:26.320
these are the ones who are responsible

44:26.320 --> 44:27.800
for penning down the scriptures

44:27.800 --> 44:30.340
and copying the scriptures and preserving the scriptures

44:30.340 --> 44:31.520
yeah but they're heretics

44:32.740 --> 44:34.900
we don't got no beef with what they pen down

44:35.580 --> 44:36.960
we don't have beef with

44:36.960 --> 44:38.540
the scriptures that they pen down

44:38.540 --> 44:39.880
we got beef with them

44:41.640 --> 44:42.380
it's them

44:42.380 --> 44:44.420
and you know what, if they're

44:44.420 --> 44:45.820
so selected by God

44:45.820 --> 44:47.460
if God is so pleased with them

44:47.460 --> 44:50.500
then why are they so heretical even though they copy the Bible over and over

44:50.500 --> 44:50.900
and over again

44:51.780 --> 44:53.100
same thing with the orthodox

44:54.380 --> 44:55.340
you know

44:55.340 --> 44:58.540
the orthos had a thousand one hundred years

44:59.500 --> 45:00.660
of just

45:00.660 --> 45:01.680
penning down the scriptures

45:01.680 --> 45:04.800
hearing about believe on the Lord Jesus Christ

45:04.800 --> 45:06.460
and thou shalt be saved

45:06.460 --> 45:07.960
writing down John 3

45:07.960 --> 45:10.240
16 over and over and over again

45:10.960 --> 45:12.800
penning down he that believeth on the sun

45:12.800 --> 45:13.980
hath everlasting life

45:13.980 --> 45:16.160
just over and over and over

45:16.160 --> 45:18.460
for over a thousand years

45:19.480 --> 45:21.220
folks, think about that for a second

45:21.820 --> 45:22.820
when you're

45:22.820 --> 45:24.320
when you're penning down Ephesians 2

45:24.320 --> 45:27.040
obviously they didn't have those references

45:27.540 --> 45:29.560
but I'm talking about the actual passages

45:29.560 --> 45:30.300
within these references

45:30.300 --> 45:33.080
when you're penning down Ephesians 2 verse 8 through 9 over and over again

45:33.080 --> 45:34.840
and you're just still unsaved

45:37.460 --> 45:37.860
right?

45:38.520 --> 45:41.300
when you're just penning down John 3 16 over and over again

45:41.300 --> 45:42.780
you think God's not mad at that

45:44.160 --> 45:45.020
it's like wow

45:45.020 --> 45:46.660
a thousand one hundred years

45:46.660 --> 45:49.160
and you guys can't seem to get your doctrine right about my son

45:50.080 --> 45:51.180
you can't seem to believe

45:51.180 --> 45:52.120
in the right salvation

45:52.120 --> 45:53.500
you're still worshiped

45:53.500 --> 45:54.620
you know a thousand

45:55.440 --> 45:56.840
one hundred years listen to this

45:57.500 --> 45:59.480
little children keep yourselves

45:59.480 --> 46:00.160
from idols

46:02.540 --> 46:03.900
and then you're just like

46:05.020 --> 46:06.700
kissing the icons

46:07.460 --> 46:07.760
right?

46:09.180 --> 46:11.080
a thousand one hundred years of saying

46:11.080 --> 46:13.740
keep yourselves from idols, flee from idolatry

46:13.740 --> 46:14.900
and they're just like

46:20.460 --> 46:21.440
what the heck

46:24.060 --> 46:26.440
it's like it's insanity

46:27.660 --> 46:29.320
oh man it was just the tragedy

46:29.320 --> 46:30.500
what happened in Constantinople

46:30.500 --> 46:32.800
no actually maybe God was trying to get a hold

46:32.800 --> 46:34.760
of you know these eastern

46:34.760 --> 46:35.520
orthodox people

46:36.920 --> 46:38.920
and you know obviously he's working all things together

46:38.920 --> 46:40.680
for good he knows that he's going to use

46:40.680 --> 46:42.700
their hard work to eventually preserve

46:42.700 --> 46:44.220
the scriptures so we can have it in our

46:44.220 --> 46:45.220
English King James Bible

46:45.980 --> 46:48.620
but you know he's also giving him a lot of time to just

46:48.620 --> 46:50.460
hey you know did you think about

46:50.460 --> 46:51.180
what you wrote down

46:52.740 --> 46:54.120
what do you think about that verse

46:54.120 --> 46:56.580
that says you know not to

46:56.580 --> 46:58.480
not to have idols

46:58.480 --> 47:00.280
what do you think about the verse about not

47:00.280 --> 47:01.140
baptizing babies

47:02.280 --> 47:04.060
you know hey those

47:04.060 --> 47:06.280
times that you guys pen down the scriptures over and over again

47:06.280 --> 47:07.480
did you see any babies getting

47:07.480 --> 47:09.440
did you write about any babies getting baptized

47:11.020 --> 47:12.220
and they're just like

47:12.220 --> 47:12.860
you know

47:13.620 --> 47:15.960
they write down the thief on the cross

47:15.960 --> 47:18.320
they write down Roman 7

47:19.180 --> 47:20.240
they write down

47:20.240 --> 47:22.120
Matthew 28 and they're just like

47:23.160 --> 47:24.940
because they do it like three times right

47:26.960 --> 47:28.020
so it's just like

47:28.020 --> 47:28.820
what in the world

47:28.820 --> 47:31.460
so it doesn't really matter how they were used

47:31.460 --> 47:32.540
because obviously they didn't

47:32.540 --> 47:34.520
you know what they were used to do

47:34.520 --> 47:36.460
didn't affect their belief system much

47:36.920 --> 47:38.060
just like the scribes here

47:38.800 --> 47:40.980
so the scribes they were prominent figures

47:40.980 --> 47:41.940
in the New Testament

47:42.900 --> 47:44.160
people respected them

47:44.160 --> 47:45.800
they were well learned

47:45.800 --> 47:47.120
they had wisdom

47:47.120 --> 47:48.800
they were skilled in reading

47:49.420 --> 47:50.180
and understanding

47:50.180 --> 47:52.740
and so the Jews are just like wow these guys are just

47:53.360 --> 47:54.720
these are the guys here

47:54.720 --> 47:56.120
what does the Bible mean about this

47:56.120 --> 47:58.820
you know you have King Herod calling over the scribes

47:58.820 --> 48:00.420
to figure out information

48:00.420 --> 48:01.240
about the Messiah

48:02.880 --> 48:04.440
you know you have these people

48:04.440 --> 48:06.140
just claiming to know the Word of God

48:06.140 --> 48:08.020
understanding neither what they say

48:08.020 --> 48:08.880
nor where they affirm

48:09.660 --> 48:11.660
they're desiring to be teachers of the law

48:11.660 --> 48:13.440
they don't know what they're talking about

48:13.440 --> 48:15.960
and so they're held to a higher standard

48:16.440 --> 48:17.880
because it's not that they were ignorant

48:17.880 --> 48:19.460
of the scriptures they possessed them

48:19.460 --> 48:20.740
but they never possessed salvation

48:21.420 --> 48:23.180
you know what the same goes for

48:23.180 --> 48:24.840
the Orthodox from

48:25.320 --> 48:27.100
330 A.D. in Constantinople

48:27.100 --> 48:29.400
to 1453 when they were taken over

48:29.400 --> 48:30.400
by the Ottoman Empire

48:30.400 --> 48:32.020
they were given a lot of time

48:32.020 --> 48:35.600
I mean thousands and thousands and thousands of copies

48:35.600 --> 48:36.900
of the scriptures are being penned down

48:36.900 --> 48:38.820
and boom you know

48:38.820 --> 48:40.460
it just didn't affect them at all

48:41.540 --> 48:43.220
and so this is why he's preaching against them

48:43.220 --> 48:45.200
so look at verse 1 if you would

48:45.920 --> 48:47.260
that was all introduction

48:48.500 --> 48:50.920
so let's get into the crux of the brass tax here

48:52.680 --> 48:54.800
some of you chuckled nervously right now

48:55.540 --> 48:57.300
then spake Jesus to the multitude

48:57.300 --> 48:59.380
into his disciples saying the scribes and the Pharisees

48:59.380 --> 49:00.180
sit in Moses' seat

49:00.180 --> 49:02.400
all therefore whatever they bid you observe

49:02.400 --> 49:03.780
that observe and do

49:04.460 --> 49:06.380
but do not ye after their works

49:06.380 --> 49:08.000
for they say and do not

49:08.000 --> 49:09.440
now compare that

49:09.920 --> 49:11.520
with Ezra the scribe

49:11.520 --> 49:14.120
who he sought the word of God

49:14.120 --> 49:15.720
and he sought to do it

49:16.300 --> 49:17.640
whereas these scribes

49:17.640 --> 49:18.660
we're not talking about the Pharisees

49:18.660 --> 49:22.240
they're telling other people to do things

49:22.240 --> 49:23.540
that they are not willing to do

49:23.540 --> 49:25.900
you know what they call that? a hypocrite

49:26.860 --> 49:27.980
they're talking about

49:27.980 --> 49:29.540
the law of Moses says

49:29.540 --> 49:31.520
they're talking about believing on the Messiah

49:31.520 --> 49:33.120
and they don't believe it

49:35.060 --> 49:36.260
hypocrites he says in verse 4

49:36.260 --> 49:38.300
for they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be born

49:38.300 --> 49:39.860
and lay them on men's shoulders

49:39.860 --> 49:41.860
but they themselves will not move them

49:41.860 --> 49:42.980
with one of their fingers

49:42.980 --> 49:45.380
now specifically this is addressing the fact

49:45.380 --> 49:46.760
that they're telling people

49:46.760 --> 49:48.340
you need to keep the law of Moses

49:48.340 --> 49:49.380
but they don't keep the law of Moses

49:50.480 --> 49:52.820
you can't be a thief but they're stealing from the widows

49:52.820 --> 49:55.520
you know oh covetousness

49:55.960 --> 49:57.780
is a sin but yet they're

49:57.780 --> 49:59.040
some of the most covetous people

49:59.820 --> 50:00.740
in the New Testament

50:01.780 --> 50:03.640
so what they're saying is not bad

50:03.640 --> 50:05.540
what they're saying is actually true

50:06.000 --> 50:06.420
right?

50:07.180 --> 50:08.680
they're actually sitting in Moses' seat

50:08.680 --> 50:10.420
meaning they're coming in the authority of Moses

50:10.420 --> 50:12.240
they're telling people what Moses said

50:12.240 --> 50:14.320
but they don't really believe what Moses said

50:14.820 --> 50:16.640
and it's not because they're confused about it

50:16.640 --> 50:19.780
it's because inwardly they're trying to deceive people

50:20.380 --> 50:21.320
you know they

50:21.820 --> 50:23.320
hold to their traditions

50:23.940 --> 50:25.460
more than they hold to the word of God

50:25.460 --> 50:26.100
okay

50:28.020 --> 50:29.720
it's essentially they're masquerading

50:29.720 --> 50:30.280
is what they're doing

50:31.120 --> 50:32.220
as righteous people

50:32.860 --> 50:33.960
and why are they doing this

50:33.960 --> 50:35.720
look at verse five but all their works they do

50:35.720 --> 50:37.000
for it to be seen of men

50:37.480 --> 50:39.380
they make brothel phylacteries

50:39.380 --> 50:40.960
and enlarge the borders of their garments

50:40.960 --> 50:42.820
love the uppermost rooms at the feast

50:42.820 --> 50:44.160
and the chief seats and the synagogues

50:44.160 --> 50:46.620
so why are they doing this

50:46.620 --> 50:49.160
well because of the fact that they want other people

50:49.160 --> 50:51.780
to esteem them as being righteous people

50:51.780 --> 50:52.860
now look folks

50:52.860 --> 50:54.660
we all to a certain degree want that

50:54.660 --> 50:57.560
let your life so shine before men

50:57.560 --> 50:59.640
we want to make a good impression before people

50:59.640 --> 51:00.800
we want to be a good testimony

51:01.440 --> 51:03.100
but here's the thing is that inwardly

51:03.100 --> 51:04.540
we also want to please the Lord too

51:05.180 --> 51:06.440
we love the Lord

51:06.440 --> 51:08.080
we want to please the Lord

51:08.080 --> 51:10.780
these are two things that we want to accomplish

51:10.780 --> 51:13.300
we want to do right because we love the Lord

51:13.300 --> 51:14.700
we also want to do right because

51:14.700 --> 51:16.960
it's an example unto others as well

51:17.500 --> 51:17.900
right

51:19.100 --> 51:20.720
here's the difference between us and the Pharisees

51:20.720 --> 51:22.580
they only want to do right before people

51:22.580 --> 51:23.860
not because they want to help people

51:23.860 --> 51:25.600
because they're just self-righteous

51:26.400 --> 51:26.920
Pharisees

51:26.920 --> 51:28.600
who want the admiration

51:29.240 --> 51:30.520
of the multitudes

51:30.520 --> 51:33.460
and so this is why they make

51:33.460 --> 51:35.520
broader phylacteries they enlarge the borders

51:35.520 --> 51:36.980
of their garments they wear the dresses

51:36.980 --> 51:39.300
because they want to portray themselves

51:39.660 --> 51:40.700
as being righteous people

51:40.700 --> 51:43.180
this is what 2 Timothy 3 means when it says

51:43.180 --> 51:45.400
that they have a form of godliness

51:45.400 --> 51:47.400
but they deny the power they're of

51:47.400 --> 51:48.840
meaning from the outside it's like

51:48.840 --> 51:50.980
oh okay you got a long dress

51:50.980 --> 51:53.000
got the wizard dress

51:53.000 --> 51:55.340
or whatever seems like a righteous person

51:55.340 --> 51:56.940
but they're only

51:56.940 --> 51:58.360
outwardly appear such

51:58.750 --> 52:00.920
in order to deter attention from the fact

52:00.920 --> 52:02.040
that they're actual wolves

52:02.870 --> 52:04.040
and in fact look at

52:04.810 --> 52:07.120
go down to verse number

52:07.900 --> 52:08.560
25

52:08.560 --> 52:09.880
it says

52:20.980 --> 52:22.280
which is within the cup and platter

52:22.280 --> 52:24.860
that the outside of them may be clean

52:24.860 --> 52:27.300
also won't you scribes and Pharisees

52:27.300 --> 52:28.680
hypocrites for you're like unto

52:28.680 --> 52:30.000
whited sepulchers

52:30.000 --> 52:32.780
which indeed appear beautiful outward

52:32.780 --> 52:34.900
but are within full of dead men's

52:34.900 --> 52:36.860
bones and of all uncleanness

52:36.860 --> 52:38.840
so what is he saying you know you guys

52:38.840 --> 52:40.920
with your broad phylacteries

52:40.920 --> 52:43.020
and your robes and your outward

52:43.020 --> 52:45.160
appearance you're just like a really beautiful

52:45.160 --> 52:47.040
sepulcher a casket

52:47.040 --> 52:48.860
but inwardly you're just dead

52:48.860 --> 52:50.360
and in fact they're twice dead

52:50.920 --> 52:51.760
plucked up by the roots

52:51.760 --> 52:54.220
oh Jesus Christ you're going to get across

52:54.860 --> 52:56.260
you look alive on the outside

52:56.260 --> 52:57.680
but you're actually dead on the inside

52:57.680 --> 53:00.780
not even saved and they're more concerned

53:00.780 --> 53:02.760
with portraying themselves

53:02.760 --> 53:03.560
to be alive

53:03.560 --> 53:06.240
trying to look like they're super spiritual

53:06.760 --> 53:08.540
trying to have the garments of a spiritual

53:08.540 --> 53:10.300
person but there's

53:10.300 --> 53:11.440
no life inside

53:12.780 --> 53:14.020
go back to

53:14.640 --> 53:15.520
the beginning here

53:16.160 --> 53:17.360
it says in verse seven

53:18.380 --> 53:19.500
and greetings in the

53:19.500 --> 53:21.980
markets and to be called of men rabbi rabbi

53:22.940 --> 53:23.380
but

53:23.380 --> 53:25.480
be naive called rabbi for one is your master

53:25.480 --> 53:27.220
even Christ and all you are brethren

53:27.220 --> 53:29.660
and call no man your father which is upon the earth

53:29.660 --> 53:31.380
for one is your father which is

53:31.380 --> 53:33.260
in heaven neither be called masters

53:33.260 --> 53:35.220
for one is your master even Christ

53:35.220 --> 53:37.800
but he that is greatest among you shall be your servant

53:37.800 --> 53:39.160
so what is the motive

53:39.160 --> 53:41.560
that these scribes have as to why

53:41.560 --> 53:43.440
they're doing this well it says

53:43.440 --> 53:45.460
here that they basically

53:45.460 --> 53:46.980
love to have

53:46.980 --> 53:49.000
the acclimations of the public

53:49.000 --> 53:51.640
meaning that they want to have the titles

53:52.540 --> 53:53.840
and they want to be called

53:53.840 --> 53:56.220
rabbi they want to be called master

53:56.220 --> 53:58.040
they want to be called father

53:58.040 --> 53:59.360
now look folks

53:59.360 --> 54:01.060
this is not prohibiting

54:01.060 --> 54:03.720
these titles from people

54:03.720 --> 54:05.360
who actually deserve them

54:05.360 --> 54:06.760
for example

54:06.760 --> 54:08.840
my dad deserves to be called father

54:09.740 --> 54:11.060
because he's my dad

54:11.060 --> 54:12.640
and in the bible

54:12.640 --> 54:14.820
master is synonymous

54:14.820 --> 54:16.020
with what boss

54:17.220 --> 54:18.700
so it's not prohibiting

54:19.820 --> 54:20.900
employees calling

54:20.900 --> 54:22.680
their employer master

54:22.680 --> 54:24.940
because we actually see in Colossians

54:24.940 --> 54:26.920
chapter three to obey

54:26.920 --> 54:28.960
your masters paul what are you doing

54:28.960 --> 54:30.240
man hey what do you mean hey

54:30.240 --> 54:32.020
didn't you read Matthew 23

54:33.080 --> 54:34.760
so is this a contradiction

54:34.760 --> 54:37.120
no it's just that you're too stupid to interpret

54:37.120 --> 54:39.060
to understand is to know

54:39.060 --> 54:41.040
that when Jesus says call no man

54:41.040 --> 54:42.960
master rabbi or father

54:42.960 --> 54:44.880
he's addressing spiritual leaders

54:45.900 --> 54:47.920
not biological fathers

54:47.920 --> 54:49.400
not employees

54:49.400 --> 54:51.280
or employers excuse me

54:51.280 --> 54:52.740
he's referring to spiritual leaders

54:52.740 --> 54:53.700
who want these titles

54:53.700 --> 54:57.000
this is why we should not go for

54:57.000 --> 54:58.740
our masters of divinity degree

54:58.740 --> 55:01.040
you know and we should not

55:01.040 --> 55:02.320
be called father and so

55:02.320 --> 55:04.500
you quote this to a catholic

55:05.060 --> 55:06.460
you quote this to an orthodox

55:06.460 --> 55:08.040
and they just like

55:08.040 --> 55:09.780
I guess what do you call your dad

55:09.780 --> 55:12.020
well I don't call him father because

55:12.020 --> 55:14.060
I'm just you know that's just

55:14.060 --> 55:15.780
2026 I was just like father

55:16.460 --> 55:17.840
you know call him dad

55:18.400 --> 55:19.280
or I call him pops

55:19.280 --> 55:22.440
but this is referring

55:22.440 --> 55:24.380
to spiritual leaders and you know

55:24.380 --> 55:26.820
they'll they will up and down

55:26.820 --> 55:28.420
quote verses from the bible

55:28.420 --> 55:30.620
of people using the term father

55:30.620 --> 55:32.820
but they'll never actually tell you what this verse actually

55:34.400 --> 55:34.960
is

55:34.960 --> 55:36.420
they'll never tell you like well okay

55:36.420 --> 55:38.160
so what did Jesus mean by that then

55:39.360 --> 55:40.200
what did he mean

55:40.200 --> 55:41.460
they can't tell you

55:42.200 --> 55:44.640
because they want to continue in their traditions

55:44.640 --> 55:45.500
okay

55:46.060 --> 55:48.820
skip down to verse number 13

55:48.820 --> 55:49.680
it says

55:49.680 --> 55:59.660
what is the same

55:59.660 --> 56:02.140
so this essentially separates

56:03.060 --> 56:04.880
the wickedness of a scribe

56:04.880 --> 56:06.020
from the wickedness of just

56:06.020 --> 56:07.340
your regular unsafe person

56:08.300 --> 56:09.660
because an unsafe person

56:09.660 --> 56:11.740
is wicked in the eyes of the lord

56:11.740 --> 56:13.440
in the sense that he's unregenerated

56:14.420 --> 56:15.880
he's walking according to the

56:15.880 --> 56:16.860
course of this world

56:17.500 --> 56:19.360
he's fulfilling the lust of the flesh

56:19.360 --> 56:20.760
and of the mind right

56:20.760 --> 56:22.580
he's just an unsafe person

56:22.580 --> 56:24.320
the scribe on the other hand

56:24.320 --> 56:25.940
not only has that

56:26.420 --> 56:28.200
but they add on top of that

56:29.140 --> 56:30.340
perverting the gospel

56:30.340 --> 56:32.080
and hindering those

56:32.080 --> 56:33.720
from hearing the gospel

56:33.720 --> 56:36.260
or hindering people who already believe in the gospel

56:36.260 --> 56:38.160
from going further into

56:38.160 --> 56:39.360
their Christian growth

56:40.100 --> 56:41.840
because when it says they're hindering those

56:41.840 --> 56:42.840
who are entering in

56:42.840 --> 56:45.080
it means that they're intentionally

56:45.080 --> 56:47.840
trying to stop people who are saved

56:47.840 --> 56:48.940
from doing the work of God

56:49.560 --> 56:50.520
that's what it means

56:51.460 --> 56:52.900
so make no mistake about it

56:52.900 --> 56:54.180
if you are a person

56:55.200 --> 56:55.560
who

56:56.640 --> 56:58.040
you're attacking men of God

56:58.440 --> 57:00.060
you're trying to stop people from preaching

57:00.060 --> 57:00.740
the word of God

57:00.740 --> 57:02.840
you're trying to stop people from preaching the gospel

57:03.260 --> 57:03.960
you're wicked

57:05.140 --> 57:06.940
you're a godless individual

57:07.700 --> 57:08.780
who according to the Bible

57:08.780 --> 57:11.100
you kind of fit the description of a scribe in a Pharisee

57:11.100 --> 57:11.720
who was not saved

57:13.060 --> 57:15.160
because look folks there's a lot of false prophets out there

57:15.160 --> 57:16.380
that I don't like and I call out

57:16.380 --> 57:17.860
but I don't spend my life

57:18.800 --> 57:20.380
trying to stop their ministries right

57:21.320 --> 57:23.520
I don't just spend my life trying to stop their ministries

57:23.520 --> 57:25.420
you know you call them out

57:25.420 --> 57:27.300
and then we just go with the program as usual

57:27.300 --> 57:29.240
but there's people out there that do

57:29.240 --> 57:31.920
there's people out there who think that we're false prophets

57:31.920 --> 57:33.740
and they will do everything

57:33.740 --> 57:36.280
humanly possible to try to stop the message of God

57:36.280 --> 57:37.480
what are they

57:37.480 --> 57:39.180
they're the ones who are not

57:39.180 --> 57:40.680
entering into the kingdom of heaven

57:40.680 --> 57:43.040
and are hindering those who are going in

57:43.040 --> 57:44.300
from doing so

57:44.300 --> 57:46.440
so they're trying to hinder the work of God

57:46.440 --> 57:49.000
they're trying to turn

57:49.520 --> 57:51.520
they're trying to turn the truth

57:51.520 --> 57:52.940
of God into a lie and so forth

57:52.940 --> 57:55.140
he says in verse 14

57:55.140 --> 57:57.420
woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites

57:57.420 --> 57:59.640
for you devour widows houses

57:59.640 --> 58:00.700
and for a pretense

58:00.700 --> 58:02.160
make long prayer

58:02.580 --> 58:04.440
therefore you shall receive the greater damnation

58:04.880 --> 58:07.040
what does it mean when it says pretense make long prayer

58:07.560 --> 58:09.940
it means these Pharisees like we gotta look real spiritual here

58:10.340 --> 58:11.660
so in order to look real spiritual

58:11.660 --> 58:13.420
we just gotta pray for a really long time

58:13.420 --> 58:14.620
in public

58:14.620 --> 58:16.860
in order to demonstrate how spiritual we are

58:17.420 --> 58:18.980
pretense means like as excuse

58:18.980 --> 58:21.100
is like as a way to just

58:21.100 --> 58:22.160
deceive people

58:22.820 --> 58:24.080
they pray long

58:24.080 --> 58:27.140
in order to make it look like they're actual righteous people

58:27.800 --> 58:28.660
all the while

58:28.660 --> 58:29.940
they're robbing widows

58:29.940 --> 58:31.160
bless you

58:32.540 --> 58:35.100
verse 15 says woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites

58:35.100 --> 58:36.680
for you can pass see and land

58:36.680 --> 58:38.880
to make one proselyte and when he is made

58:38.880 --> 58:40.860
you make him two fold more the child of hell

58:40.860 --> 58:42.180
than yourself

58:42.180 --> 58:44.780
so aside from the fact that they're hindering people

58:44.780 --> 58:47.140
from those who are entering into the kingdom of God

58:47.140 --> 58:48.340
they're also

58:49.080 --> 58:51.220
you know converting people

58:51.220 --> 58:52.520
to become reprobates

58:53.360 --> 58:55.060
so they're actively

58:55.060 --> 58:57.480
trying to damn people to hell

58:57.480 --> 58:59.620
so these are like the Mormons

58:59.620 --> 59:00.740
right

59:00.740 --> 59:02.760
oh they're so nice though

59:02.760 --> 59:05.140
you know they're just so nice

59:05.140 --> 59:06.920
and you know I just you know

59:06.920 --> 59:08.440
they're not really rude about anything

59:08.880 --> 59:11.080
yeah but they're dandle heretics though

59:11.080 --> 59:13.260
they teach a false gospel

59:13.260 --> 59:14.220
okay

59:14.220 --> 59:15.720
no applause please

59:15.720 --> 59:17.760
you know they're

59:17.760 --> 59:20.060
dandle heretics that teach a false gospel

59:20.060 --> 59:21.860
they teach in a cursed gospel

59:21.860 --> 59:24.220
okay so it doesn't really matter how

59:24.220 --> 59:25.120
nice they look

59:25.900 --> 59:27.380
you know it doesn't really matter

59:27.380 --> 59:29.300
how white they are

59:29.920 --> 59:32.020
how blue their eyes are or whatever

59:32.580 --> 59:34.260
you know how geeky

59:34.260 --> 59:36.120
they look on their 10 speeder and innocent they look

59:36.120 --> 59:37.960
the Bible says that they're actually

59:37.960 --> 59:39.280
the workers of iniquity

59:39.280 --> 59:42.120
you know these are the ministers

59:42.120 --> 59:43.480
of Satan according to the Bible

59:44.000 --> 59:45.920
because if they convert people to Mormonism

59:45.920 --> 59:47.900
they're essentially making them two fold more child of hell

59:47.900 --> 59:48.480
than themselves

59:50.220 --> 59:50.660
okay

59:51.740 --> 59:53.100
let's skip a couple parts here

59:53.540 --> 59:55.580
go down to verse number

59:56.740 --> 59:57.180
29

59:59.160 --> 01:00:00.020
this is won't you

01:00:00.020 --> 01:00:01.560
scribes and Pharisees hypocrites because

01:00:01.560 --> 01:00:03.660
you build the tombs of the prophets

01:00:04.280 --> 01:00:06.020
and garnish the sepulchers of the

01:00:06.020 --> 01:00:08.040
righteous and say if we had been in the days

01:00:08.040 --> 01:00:09.960
of our fathers we would have not

01:00:09.960 --> 01:00:11.980
been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets

01:00:12.600 --> 01:00:13.960
so this is always a funny

01:00:13.960 --> 01:00:15.960
funny passage of scripture when I read this

01:00:15.960 --> 01:00:18.020
because what it demonstrates is like

01:00:18.020 --> 01:00:19.900
false prophets will just tell you

01:00:19.900 --> 01:00:20.680
what they actually believe

01:00:21.680 --> 01:00:23.460
you just got to pay attention to what they're saying

01:00:25.060 --> 01:00:25.920
you say what do you mean

01:00:25.920 --> 01:00:28.160
well they're garnishing the

01:00:28.160 --> 01:00:30.000
sepulchers of the righteous meaning they're trying to make everything

01:00:30.000 --> 01:00:31.880
you know they're honoring

01:00:31.880 --> 01:00:33.880
the prophets of the Old Testament they go to the

01:00:33.880 --> 01:00:36.160
tombs and the sepulchers of the Old Testament prophets

01:00:36.160 --> 01:00:37.960
and they honor them

01:00:37.960 --> 01:00:40.220
and they put flowers there

01:00:40.220 --> 01:00:41.900
and they honor them with their lips

01:00:41.900 --> 01:00:44.160
and then they say this if we were there

01:00:44.160 --> 01:00:45.140
in the days of our fathers

01:00:45.780 --> 01:00:47.620
we would have not been partakers in the blood

01:00:47.620 --> 01:00:49.920
of the prophets so basically

01:00:49.920 --> 01:00:52.320
they are divulging

01:00:52.320 --> 01:00:52.920
admitting

01:00:53.540 --> 01:00:55.140
that they're related to

01:00:55.850 --> 01:00:57.320
the dudes who kill the prophets

01:00:59.060 --> 01:01:00.260
it's like so are you

01:01:00.260 --> 01:01:01.620
saying that you're spiritually

01:01:02.160 --> 01:01:03.760
like related to

01:01:04.560 --> 01:01:06.220
these false prophets who killed

01:01:06.220 --> 01:01:08.220
the righteous prophets that's basically what they're saying

01:01:08.720 --> 01:01:10.020
they're a generation

01:01:10.020 --> 01:01:10.940
of vipers

01:01:10.940 --> 01:01:14.040
and look folks sometimes you just need to pay attention

01:01:14.040 --> 01:01:14.920
to what people say

01:01:16.140 --> 01:01:17.760
because out of the abundance of the heart

01:01:17.760 --> 01:01:18.880
the mouth speaketh

01:01:18.880 --> 01:01:21.600
a good man out of the good treasure of his heart

01:01:21.600 --> 01:01:23.960
bringeth forth good things and evil man out of the evil treasure

01:01:23.960 --> 01:01:26.140
of his heart bringeth forth evil things

01:01:26.140 --> 01:01:27.640
by their words thou shalt be justified

01:01:28.040 --> 01:01:29.900
by their words thou shalt be condemned

01:01:30.940 --> 01:01:32.500
you know what that's why I'm not afraid

01:01:32.500 --> 01:01:34.260
to just get up here and preach the word

01:01:34.260 --> 01:01:36.500
of God with no notes because I know

01:01:36.500 --> 01:01:37.520
that I believe the truth

01:01:38.080 --> 01:01:40.060
and I'm not just have to read through a script

01:01:40.060 --> 01:01:42.280
here just to make sure I don't say anything weird

01:01:42.280 --> 01:01:44.320
or something because I'm just going to preach

01:01:44.320 --> 01:01:44.860
to you the Bible

01:01:45.720 --> 01:01:47.560
I'm just going to preach you what the word of God says

01:01:47.560 --> 01:01:49.440
I'm going to speak as the oracles of God

01:01:49.440 --> 01:01:52.020
but you know what these false prophets they have to have

01:01:52.020 --> 01:01:53.880
like an entire script available for you

01:01:54.440 --> 01:01:56.000
you know and obviously I have

01:01:56.000 --> 01:01:58.100
notes sometimes and just to kind of help me

01:01:58.100 --> 01:02:00.120
not deviate from you know the structure

01:02:00.120 --> 01:02:02.220
of the sermon that's completely

01:02:02.220 --> 01:02:04.300
normal and I'm not telling the new preachers to do

01:02:04.300 --> 01:02:06.200
what I'm doing right now you need to be preaching

01:02:06.200 --> 01:02:07.920
for another 10 years before you start doing that

01:02:07.920 --> 01:02:10.020
but you know have notes but I'm talking

01:02:10.020 --> 01:02:12.100
about people who literally will have notes

01:02:12.100 --> 01:02:14.100
and they just read word for word everything

01:02:14.100 --> 01:02:16.140
that's on those notes because

01:02:16.140 --> 01:02:18.160
they don't want to give away to their false prophets

01:02:18.160 --> 01:02:20.100
because you know what you know what's going to happen

01:02:20.100 --> 01:02:22.200
they're going to eventually say something they're not

01:02:22.200 --> 01:02:24.060
supposed to say they're going to preach

01:02:24.060 --> 01:02:26.520
dandable heresy they're going to deny

01:02:26.520 --> 01:02:28.260
the doctrines of Christ because

01:02:28.260 --> 01:02:30.120
that's exactly who they are oh if we had been

01:02:30.120 --> 01:02:32.020
the days of our fathers we would have not been partakers

01:02:32.020 --> 01:02:32.880
of the blood of the prophets

01:02:33.860 --> 01:02:35.920
and look what he says in verse number

01:02:35.920 --> 01:02:38.980
31 wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves

01:02:38.980 --> 01:02:40.680
that ye are the children of them

01:02:40.680 --> 01:02:41.340
which kill the prophets

01:02:42.200 --> 01:02:43.880
fill ye up the measure of your fathers

01:02:43.880 --> 01:02:46.020
he's like fill up the shoes of your

01:02:46.020 --> 01:02:48.080
dads you know if these are your

01:02:48.080 --> 01:02:50.340
fathers if these are the people you associate

01:02:50.340 --> 01:02:52.040
with then fill up the measure

01:02:52.040 --> 01:02:54.160
of your progenitors

01:02:55.380 --> 01:02:56.180
you serpents

01:02:56.180 --> 01:02:58.140
you generation of vipers how can

01:02:58.140 --> 01:02:59.720
ye escape the damnation

01:03:00.240 --> 01:03:02.140
of hell this is why sometimes you need

01:03:02.140 --> 01:03:03.240
listen to these pastors

01:03:04.220 --> 01:03:05.920
and they preach something and it's just like

01:03:05.920 --> 01:03:06.800
what did he say?

01:03:07.480 --> 01:03:09.280
what did he say? you know he's just like

01:03:10.740 --> 01:03:12.360
what? that's literally what they believe

01:03:12.920 --> 01:03:14.100
and I'm not saying that sometimes

01:03:14.100 --> 01:03:16.060
you know you're going to be up here if you're preaching

01:03:16.060 --> 01:03:18.100
you might have a slip of the tongue

01:03:18.100 --> 01:03:19.840
you might say something inaccurate I'm talking about like

01:03:19.840 --> 01:03:22.160
weird stuff dandable heresy

01:03:22.740 --> 01:03:23.620
that you know

01:03:23.980 --> 01:03:26.100
essentially demonstrates that you are a wicked person

01:03:26.100 --> 01:03:26.940
ok

01:03:28.100 --> 01:03:29.740
you know this is what they do

01:03:29.740 --> 01:03:31.960
verse 34 says wherefore behold I send unto you

01:03:31.960 --> 01:03:34.120
prophets and wise men and scribes

01:03:34.120 --> 01:03:36.080
and some of them ye shall kill and crucify

01:03:36.080 --> 01:03:38.060
and some of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues

01:03:38.060 --> 01:03:40.660
and persecute them from city to city

01:03:40.660 --> 01:03:42.260
so what we have here

01:03:42.260 --> 01:03:44.000
is the fact that

01:03:44.840 --> 01:03:45.960
scribes played an

01:03:45.960 --> 01:03:47.000
important role in Israel

01:03:48.240 --> 01:03:49.500
but you know

01:03:50.100 --> 01:03:52.020
because they didn't obey

01:03:52.020 --> 01:03:52.880
or believe

01:03:53.720 --> 01:03:54.980
the words that they were

01:03:54.980 --> 01:03:56.140
penning down for others

01:03:56.760 --> 01:03:58.720
they received the greater damnation

01:03:59.460 --> 01:04:00.180
you understand

01:04:00.180 --> 01:04:02.420
and this is showing us to whomsoever much is given

01:04:02.420 --> 01:04:03.720
of him shall be much required

01:04:03.720 --> 01:04:06.280
ok go to Jeremiah chapter 8 we'll finish off

01:04:06.280 --> 01:04:08.500
in Jeremiah chapter 8

01:04:09.480 --> 01:04:10.840
Jeremiah chapter 8

01:04:10.840 --> 01:04:11.460
if you would

01:04:15.660 --> 01:04:16.840
Jeremiah chapter 8

01:04:16.840 --> 01:04:18.880
and you know if you walk away from the sermon

01:04:18.880 --> 01:04:20.580
learning anything just learn just know this

01:04:20.580 --> 01:04:23.380
just because an institution does something good

01:04:23.380 --> 01:04:25.100
doesn't lend veracity to that institution

01:04:25.100 --> 01:04:26.700
you know what

01:04:26.700 --> 01:04:28.540
it lends legitimacy what do they believe

01:04:29.600 --> 01:04:31.700
now if you get someone who believes right

01:04:31.700 --> 01:04:33.620
and does right and does great works

01:04:33.620 --> 01:04:34.700
it's a great combination

01:04:35.560 --> 01:04:36.120
right

01:04:36.120 --> 01:04:38.000
if someone believes the right gospel

01:04:38.000 --> 01:04:39.420
they believe the right doctrine

01:04:39.420 --> 01:04:42.160
and they're doing righteous works praise God for that

01:04:42.160 --> 01:04:44.700
I'm just saying if there's an institution

01:04:44.700 --> 01:04:46.360
who expects for you

01:04:46.360 --> 01:04:49.720
to believe that their righteous based upon their works

01:04:49.720 --> 01:04:51.580
but they believe something completely different

01:04:51.580 --> 01:04:53.200
from the gospel of Christ

01:04:54.220 --> 01:04:55.720
they are idolaters

01:04:57.300 --> 01:04:58.180
they are

01:04:58.180 --> 01:04:59.740
godless people and their doctrine

01:04:59.740 --> 01:05:01.800
then you know what it doesn't matter what they do

01:05:01.800 --> 01:05:03.960
they're unto every good work reprobate

01:05:03.960 --> 01:05:04.300
yeah

01:05:05.340 --> 01:05:08.000
because their works do not justify them

01:05:08.000 --> 01:05:08.980
in the eyes of God

01:05:08.980 --> 01:05:11.700
you know what it doesn't justify them in our eyes either

01:05:12.200 --> 01:05:13.340
because at the end of the day

01:05:13.340 --> 01:05:15.340
what you believe is actually the most important thing

01:05:16.380 --> 01:05:17.800
look at Jeremiah 8

01:05:17.800 --> 01:05:18.520
and verse 8

01:05:19.420 --> 01:05:21.120
and let's see how this fits

01:05:21.800 --> 01:05:23.940
this sermon about the scribes it says in verse 8

01:05:23.940 --> 01:05:25.800
how do you say we are wise

01:05:25.800 --> 01:05:28.520
and the law of the lord is with us

01:05:28.520 --> 01:05:29.300
low

01:05:29.300 --> 01:05:31.320
certainly in vain

01:05:31.320 --> 01:05:33.040
made he it

01:05:33.040 --> 01:05:35.160
the pen of the scribe

01:05:35.160 --> 01:05:36.320
is in vain

01:05:37.100 --> 01:05:39.620
so this is like oh man we're the scribes

01:05:39.620 --> 01:05:40.860
we have the law

01:05:40.860 --> 01:05:43.840
we know what the bible says we spent so much time

01:05:43.840 --> 01:05:45.000
copying it

01:05:45.000 --> 01:05:46.100
distributing it

01:05:46.100 --> 01:05:47.740
but you don't believe it so it's in vain

01:05:49.100 --> 01:05:50.140
those thousand

01:05:50.140 --> 01:05:52.540
100 years of copying

01:05:52.540 --> 01:05:55.200
the Greek New Testament in the Byzantine Empire

01:05:55.200 --> 01:05:56.220
in vain

01:05:56.220 --> 01:05:57.320
not in vain for us

01:05:58.280 --> 01:05:59.800
we benefited from it

01:06:00.780 --> 01:06:03.160
like thanks for doing the work for us

01:06:04.620 --> 01:06:05.140
right

01:06:05.140 --> 01:06:05.740
that's what it was

01:06:06.480 --> 01:06:09.000
we'll go ahead and just take all that

01:06:09.000 --> 01:06:10.700
and benefit from it

01:06:10.700 --> 01:06:13.020
and look keep in mind in the bible

01:06:13.020 --> 01:06:14.700
God does this all the time

01:06:15.800 --> 01:06:16.600
he literally

01:06:17.480 --> 01:06:18.940
just he's like Robin Hood

01:06:18.940 --> 01:06:19.660
to a certain degree

01:06:21.620 --> 01:06:23.060
he takes from the wicked

01:06:23.060 --> 01:06:24.160
and he gives to us poor

01:06:25.620 --> 01:06:27.180
really yeah look at Canaan land

01:06:28.160 --> 01:06:29.460
he's like wipe them all out

01:06:29.460 --> 01:06:31.320
and you guys take the houses that you did not build

01:06:31.320 --> 01:06:32.840
wells that you did not dig

01:06:32.840 --> 01:06:35.180
vineyards that you did not plant and just enjoy it

01:06:35.840 --> 01:06:36.580
that's what he did

01:06:36.580 --> 01:06:38.320
is that Canaan land it's yours

01:06:38.320 --> 01:06:39.240
we'll call it Israel

01:06:41.040 --> 01:06:41.400
right

01:06:42.800 --> 01:06:43.720
does it all the time

01:06:43.720 --> 01:06:44.840
what do you do with the lepers

01:06:44.840 --> 01:06:46.360
you know he chased out

01:06:46.360 --> 01:06:48.500
the army the camp there

01:06:48.500 --> 01:06:51.080
and then just were able to go in and just eat all the food and just use it

01:06:51.640 --> 01:06:52.620
gold, silver, everything

01:06:53.420 --> 01:06:55.200
and by the way same thing in the millennial reign

01:06:56.660 --> 01:06:57.700
the third temple

01:06:57.700 --> 01:06:59.300
fourth temple whatever temple is going to be

01:06:59.980 --> 01:07:01.160
that the anti that these

01:07:01.160 --> 01:07:03.520
Zionists are making for the Antichrist

01:07:03.520 --> 01:07:04.920
you know when Jesus comes

01:07:04.920 --> 01:07:06.420
he's going to be like I'll take this

01:07:07.180 --> 01:07:07.880
he's just like

01:07:07.880 --> 01:07:09.280
flicks him into like a fire

01:07:10.060 --> 01:07:10.840
and he's like

01:07:11.740 --> 01:07:12.900
that's the temple of the Antichrist

01:07:12.900 --> 01:07:15.120
that was the temple of the Antichrist

01:07:16.000 --> 01:07:17.680
now it's now it belongs to the Lord

01:07:18.580 --> 01:07:20.280
and so you know we're going to be able

01:07:20.280 --> 01:07:22.500
also inherit things in this world

01:07:22.940 --> 01:07:24.100
like you know whatever

01:07:24.100 --> 01:07:26.360
mansions or whatever it's going to be ours

01:07:26.360 --> 01:07:27.540
we just take over

01:07:28.520 --> 01:07:29.960
you know it's just going to be ours

01:07:29.960 --> 01:07:32.420
why because the Lord a principle in the Bible

01:07:32.420 --> 01:07:34.280
is that he uses the wicked

01:07:34.820 --> 01:07:36.100
now hopefully you know the wicked

01:07:36.100 --> 01:07:38.140
when they are being productive

01:07:38.140 --> 01:07:39.980
in these areas hopefully it moves them

01:07:40.480 --> 01:07:41.700
to seek out the Lord

01:07:42.440 --> 01:07:43.800
and then eventually get saved

01:07:44.820 --> 01:07:45.520
that's the goal

01:07:45.520 --> 01:07:48.140
but at the end of the day most of them will not

01:07:48.960 --> 01:07:50.020
and so God's like okay

01:07:50.020 --> 01:07:52.380
I'll you know I'll kill two birds

01:07:52.380 --> 01:07:53.040
with one stone

01:07:53.820 --> 01:07:56.160
I'll use this to try to reach you

01:07:56.160 --> 01:07:57.060
but if it doesn't reach you

01:07:57.560 --> 01:07:59.680
either way the product is going to be used for my people

01:08:00.400 --> 01:08:02.140
as noted with what took place

01:08:02.140 --> 01:08:04.240
in Constantinople in 1453

01:08:04.240 --> 01:08:05.740
you know it

01:08:05.740 --> 01:08:07.980
the pen of the scribes was

01:08:07.980 --> 01:08:09.360
in vain

01:08:09.360 --> 01:08:11.400
there was righteous scribes in the Old Testament

01:08:11.400 --> 01:08:13.760
but unfortunately they didn't believe the words

01:08:13.760 --> 01:08:16.000
that they were writing and therefore they went apostate

01:08:16.000 --> 01:08:17.720
let's pray Father we thank you so much for your word

01:08:18.640 --> 01:08:20.080
and we're thankful for the ready

01:08:20.080 --> 01:08:21.220
scribes such as Ezra

01:08:22.620 --> 01:08:23.820
righteous scribes and obviously

01:08:23.820 --> 01:08:25.160
Beirut wasn't perfect but

01:08:25.920 --> 01:08:28.060
he was used of the Lord

01:08:28.060 --> 01:08:29.860
to pen down the words of the prophet

01:08:30.660 --> 01:08:31.680
and Lord we're thankful

01:08:32.120 --> 01:08:33.960
for how you use the wicked Lord

01:08:34.480 --> 01:08:35.960
we're not to envy the sinners

01:08:35.960 --> 01:08:37.660
because the sinners will be used by you

01:08:37.660 --> 01:08:38.740
to accomplish your will

01:08:39.440 --> 01:08:41.820
and Lord we're thankful for what took place

01:08:41.820 --> 01:08:44.080
in Constantinople in 1453

01:08:44.080 --> 01:08:46.200
were it not for it the scriptures wouldn't have gone

01:08:46.680 --> 01:08:47.860
out and we would have

01:08:47.860 --> 01:08:49.780
not had the underlying

01:08:49.780 --> 01:08:51.920
Greek texts that makes up

01:08:51.920 --> 01:08:52.860
the King James Bible

01:08:52.860 --> 01:08:54.980
and so we're thankful for that Lord

01:08:54.980 --> 01:08:57.260
I pray that you'd help us to be a ready scribe

01:08:57.260 --> 01:08:58.940
to be ready to just not just

01:08:58.940 --> 01:09:01.180
read the word of God on a daily basis

01:09:01.180 --> 01:09:03.460
in order to internalize the truths of God's word

01:09:03.460 --> 01:09:05.440
but also to expound upon it

01:09:05.800 --> 01:09:07.240
when it calls for it Lord

01:09:07.240 --> 01:09:08.640
and I pray you bless us as we go on our way

01:09:08.640 --> 01:09:10.340
we love you we thank you pray these things in Jesus name

01:09:10.340 --> 01:09:10.780
Amen
