WEBVTT 00:00.000 --> 00:00.120 Amen. 00:01.540 --> 00:01.860 Amen. 00:02.380 --> 00:08.140 Okay, we're in Genesis chapter 39 this evening and we are continuing with the chronicles of 00:08.140 --> 00:08.740 Joseph here. 00:08.860 --> 00:13.280 Of course, last week we took a little bit of a break in chapter 38 to talk about Judah 00:13.840 --> 00:19.780 and his adventures and now we're in chapter 39 here picking up where 37 left off. 00:19.920 --> 00:25.400 Of course, we know that Joseph's brethren sold him to the Medianites and he was 00:25.400 --> 00:32.140 sold because they were envious of him and they wronged him and so now we find him coming 00:32.140 --> 00:36.020 down into Egypt and being purchased by Potiphar. 00:36.080 --> 00:39.540 There's a lot of great lessons that we're going to learn from this particular chapter 00:39.540 --> 00:41.400 and from the life of Joseph here. 00:41.500 --> 00:42.220 Look at verse number one. 00:42.320 --> 00:42.460 It says, 00:42.620 --> 00:47.500 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain 00:47.500 --> 00:48.060 of the guard. 00:48.420 --> 00:52.920 And Egyptian bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites which had brought him down 00:52.920 --> 00:53.540 thither. 00:53.940 --> 00:59.760 And I want you to notice this and the Lord was with Joseph and he was a prosperous man. 01:00.220 --> 01:05.080 He was in the house of his master, the Egyptian and it's pretty much the theme of Joseph's 01:05.080 --> 01:06.960 life over and over again. 01:07.420 --> 01:12.540 We see that even though mischief befalls him, he's wrong, he's sold into slavery, 01:12.820 --> 01:18.680 he's lied about, all this evil comes upon him through the wickedness of others no 01:18.680 --> 01:20.440 matter what the Lord is with Joseph, right? 01:20.940 --> 01:22.020 God is constantly with him. 01:22.020 --> 01:26.480 And this is demonstrating to us that when we go through life, we're going to experience 01:26.480 --> 01:33.420 times when people wrong us, they defraud us, they lie about us, they slander us and therefore 01:33.420 --> 01:35.720 we need to make sure that God is with us, right? 01:35.840 --> 01:40.240 Because at that point we can essentially claim to promise that all things work together 01:40.240 --> 01:43.460 for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 01:44.200 --> 01:45.300 Now make no mistake about it. 01:45.360 --> 01:50.920 If you find yourself in a situation where you are experiencing some sort of persecution 01:52.080 --> 01:58.420 trial, tribulation, affliction, if God is not with you, if the Lord is not blessing you, 01:58.440 --> 02:01.580 if his hand is not on you, you know, it's going to suck a lot. 02:02.240 --> 02:05.320 You know, we want to go through those situations with the Lord, right? 02:05.760 --> 02:11.080 We want to go through afflictions, trials and tribulations with God's hand upon us 02:11.080 --> 02:15.860 because we know that he can turn the elements and the ingredients of those 02:15.860 --> 02:20.240 situations and turn it out for our benefit, for his glory. 02:20.240 --> 02:24.120 And that's exactly what we're going to see with Joseph, you know, even though he was 02:24.120 --> 02:29.740 sold into Egypt by the evil motive of his brethren, this is going to work out 02:29.740 --> 02:33.880 together for good because in the long run, we know that Joseph is through this, 02:33.920 --> 02:36.300 is going to be able to save his family from the famine. 02:36.680 --> 02:42.060 But of course he has to experience a lot of trials, a lot of backstabbings 02:42.060 --> 02:43.380 and betrayals and so forth. 02:43.760 --> 02:47.020 But the main theme here is that the Lord is with Joseph. 02:47.020 --> 02:51.600 I think the narrator is putting that in verse two to kind of show us like, 02:51.680 --> 02:54.560 hey, you're going to read some crazy stuff right now, right? 02:55.040 --> 02:56.460 People are going to be lying about him. 02:56.840 --> 02:58.600 People are just going to be slandering him. 02:58.760 --> 03:00.080 A lot of bad things are going to happen. 03:00.520 --> 03:03.720 And if we didn't know this part, we would be like, man, what's going on here? 03:03.960 --> 03:06.300 You know, Joseph is supposed to be a man of God. 03:06.540 --> 03:07.600 I thought the Lord loved him. 03:07.680 --> 03:08.800 The Lord gave him these dreams. 03:09.100 --> 03:13.500 And so God is kind of giving us that little bit of information to say, 03:13.560 --> 03:15.960 hey, before you get into what happens to him, 03:15.960 --> 03:18.200 just be reminded that the Lord is still with Joseph. 03:18.960 --> 03:22.640 Now this also shows us that your circumstances don't really determine 03:23.220 --> 03:24.960 whether God is with you or not, right? 03:25.500 --> 03:27.020 Sometimes situations change. 03:27.380 --> 03:30.080 Sometimes you are serving God. 03:30.400 --> 03:31.900 You are pleasing the Lord. 03:32.360 --> 03:35.860 You are living a righteous life and still evil comes upon you. 03:36.440 --> 03:37.980 That is a very normal thing. 03:38.600 --> 03:41.660 And so, you know, obviously there's instances where we can point to certain 03:41.660 --> 03:44.960 factors in our life that proves that God is with us. 03:44.960 --> 03:48.820 But then there's other instances where we go through a season of trial and 03:48.820 --> 03:53.060 tribulation and it can cause us to question, is God really with me? 03:53.500 --> 03:56.220 And of course, at that point, you need to make sure you go through 03:56.220 --> 03:59.640 the checklist of what it means to be right with God, right? 04:00.220 --> 04:01.100 Am I reading the Bible? 04:01.400 --> 04:02.920 Do I have sin in my life? 04:03.160 --> 04:04.080 You know, am I in church? 04:04.220 --> 04:07.100 Am I making sure that I'm serving the Lord, witnessing to people? 04:07.480 --> 04:08.800 You know, just kind of going through the checklist. 04:09.260 --> 04:10.980 If you go through that checklist and you're like, well, 04:11.200 --> 04:12.420 I'm doing all these things. 04:12.420 --> 04:13.680 Then you know what the Lord is with you. 04:14.940 --> 04:17.280 If you go through that list and you realize, hmm, you know, 04:17.320 --> 04:19.480 I don't think I'm fulfilling any of this. 04:19.680 --> 04:24.240 Well, maybe God is using the evil intentions of others to help you 04:24.240 --> 04:25.000 to get right with God. 04:25.820 --> 04:26.120 Okay. 04:26.660 --> 04:29.060 But in either case, it's going to benefit you in the long run. 04:29.480 --> 04:29.660 Okay. 04:30.520 --> 04:34.040 But with this situation with Joseph, Joseph hasn't done any wrong. 04:34.660 --> 04:36.800 He is someone who loves his parents. 04:36.960 --> 04:38.740 He's someone who loved his family. 04:38.840 --> 04:39.840 He's someone who loved the Lord. 04:40.260 --> 04:44.400 But he is unfortunately the unfortunate recipient of someone 04:44.400 --> 04:46.200 else's evil will, his brothers. 04:46.780 --> 04:48.140 And so he's being sold into slavery. 04:48.400 --> 04:49.560 But the Lord is with Joseph. 04:49.660 --> 04:52.140 If I want you to notice verse two, this is the Lord is with 04:52.140 --> 04:53.780 Joseph and he was a what? 04:54.160 --> 04:55.580 A prosperous man. 04:56.360 --> 04:57.600 So what are the effects? 04:57.840 --> 05:00.320 What are the results of God being with you? 05:00.460 --> 05:00.960 You'll prosper. 05:01.580 --> 05:03.600 And we see this over and over again in the Bible. 05:03.760 --> 05:06.360 You know, the Bible tells us, you know, that his delight 05:06.360 --> 05:09.360 referring to the man who's blessed, his delight is in 05:09.360 --> 05:10.400 the law of the Lord. 05:10.860 --> 05:13.000 And in his law, does he meditate day and night? 05:13.180 --> 05:15.780 He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water 05:15.780 --> 05:18.800 that bring forth his fruit in his season. 05:18.980 --> 05:21.140 His leaf also shone out wither. 05:21.220 --> 05:24.140 And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper the Bible says. 05:24.720 --> 05:28.340 So he's saying like, hey, success and prosperity is 05:28.340 --> 05:29.600 closely tied into what? 05:29.920 --> 05:30.300 God's word. 05:31.020 --> 05:32.700 So that's the number one thing that needs to be on 05:32.700 --> 05:33.360 the checklist, right? 05:34.100 --> 05:34.900 You know, is God with me? 05:35.000 --> 05:37.240 Well, first and foremost, are you walking with God? 05:37.700 --> 05:39.100 Are you reading the Bible? 05:39.680 --> 05:41.720 Because can two walk together except to be agreed, right? 05:42.260 --> 05:43.960 And in order for us to be blessed of the Lord, 05:44.000 --> 05:45.540 we need to make sure that we're living in accordance 05:45.540 --> 05:46.260 to the Bible. 05:47.060 --> 05:49.760 And so, and by the way, if we want to prosper and succeed 05:49.760 --> 05:52.560 in whatsoever we do, we need to make sure that we delight 05:52.560 --> 05:53.480 in the law of God. 05:53.620 --> 05:56.280 And of course the law can be a term that's used 05:56.800 --> 05:58.980 broadly to refer to just all the Bible, right? 05:59.600 --> 06:01.100 Genesis to Revelation for us. 06:01.700 --> 06:04.040 The point being here is that if we want to prosper, 06:04.160 --> 06:05.280 if we want the Lord to be with us, 06:05.280 --> 06:08.000 we need to make sure that we're actually reading the Bible, 06:08.120 --> 06:11.020 giving attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 06:11.420 --> 06:11.940 Think about this. 06:12.100 --> 06:16.400 You know, what did God tell Joshua when going into the promise 06:16.400 --> 06:16.640 line? 06:17.020 --> 06:19.300 He says this book of the law shall not depart out of 06:19.300 --> 06:21.880 thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night 06:21.880 --> 06:24.280 that thou mayest observe to do according to all that 06:24.280 --> 06:26.180 is written therein, for then thou shalt make that way 06:26.180 --> 06:28.240 prosperous and then thou shalt have good success. 06:28.800 --> 06:32.120 And this is in relation to the success that they want 06:32.120 --> 06:33.980 to experience when going into the promise line, 06:33.980 --> 06:35.500 the defeat of their enemies, right? 06:35.960 --> 06:38.520 The inheritance of the lots and all the things 06:38.520 --> 06:39.360 that God promised them. 06:39.700 --> 06:41.660 He's telling them, hey, if you're going to go in 06:41.660 --> 06:44.140 and succeed, you need to make sure that the word 06:44.140 --> 06:44.980 of God is in here. 06:45.520 --> 06:45.580 Okay? 06:46.940 --> 06:50.120 So in every situation in your life, at work, 06:50.580 --> 06:53.100 in your personal business, with your family, 06:53.640 --> 06:55.860 individually, solely, whatever may be your 06:55.860 --> 06:59.920 finances, the success of that area is greatly 06:59.920 --> 07:02.560 determined by your relationship to the Bible. 07:03.180 --> 07:03.620 Okay? 07:04.080 --> 07:06.980 Not what you think is right about God. 07:07.140 --> 07:10.580 It's what you are living in accordance with God's word. 07:10.740 --> 07:13.120 You need to make sure that you are reading the Bible 07:13.120 --> 07:15.780 on a daily, making sure that you're memorizing 07:15.780 --> 07:18.020 its principles, living it out, being a doer of the 07:18.020 --> 07:20.260 word, not a hearer only, and so forth. 07:20.760 --> 07:22.980 And so, you know, here's the key to prosperity. 07:23.820 --> 07:26.460 You know, the key to prosperity is not sending in 07:26.460 --> 07:29.320 a hundred dollars to some false prophet, 07:29.320 --> 07:32.260 Charlotte, on, you know, on YouTube or whatever, 07:32.400 --> 07:34.460 so that you can receive some sort of handkerchief 07:34.460 --> 07:36.800 that's been blessed by him, sneezed on or whatever. 07:37.460 --> 07:39.640 You know, prosperity is gained when you read 07:39.640 --> 07:41.580 the word of God, you obey the Bible, 07:42.020 --> 07:42.900 you memorize the Scripture. 07:43.460 --> 07:44.920 And here's the simplest way to put it. 07:45.280 --> 07:47.460 You need to make the Bible the centerpiece of your life. 07:48.060 --> 07:48.420 Okay? 07:49.600 --> 07:53.100 Not just the physical centerpiece in your home, right? 07:53.240 --> 07:54.840 It's just like, well, we got a coffee table, 07:55.020 --> 07:56.060 we got a King James Bible there. 07:56.380 --> 07:58.220 When I say the centerpiece of your home, 07:58.220 --> 08:01.880 I mean, you need to make sure that your family's 08:01.880 --> 08:04.800 direction, your direction, the things that you do 08:04.800 --> 08:08.740 is all based upon what does the Bible actually say. 08:09.600 --> 08:09.900 Okay? 08:32.400 --> 08:33.600 And obviously there's, you know, 08:33.740 --> 08:36.700 the Bible is replete with answers for everything, 08:36.880 --> 08:38.040 every decision that we have to make. 08:38.480 --> 08:39.420 But at the end of the day, 08:39.460 --> 08:40.980 there's some great areas as well, right? 08:41.180 --> 08:43.400 There's some areas where God doesn't necessarily say, 08:43.820 --> 08:45.200 thou shalt or thou shalt not. 08:45.740 --> 08:47.900 At which point we need to know enough of the Bible 08:47.900 --> 08:49.940 to just make wise decisions. 08:50.620 --> 08:52.060 We need to make sure that we know exactly 08:52.060 --> 08:52.900 what the Bible says. 08:53.340 --> 08:56.480 But we also need to have enough knowledge of the Bible 08:56.960 --> 09:00.280 to essentially direct us and give us guidance 09:00.700 --> 09:02.640 in certain decisions that we have to make, right? Because you know, church, 09:37.520 --> 09:39.740 obviously reading the Bible is the most important, 09:40.120 --> 09:40.860 but let's just be honest. 09:41.280 --> 09:43.040 You know, you're not going to be able to understand 09:43.040 --> 09:44.940 all the Bible in just a few weeks, months, 09:45.000 --> 09:45.740 or even years. 09:46.500 --> 09:49.840 So being in church helps you to kind of 09:49.840 --> 09:53.040 accelerate your understanding of the knowledge of the Bible, 09:53.460 --> 09:55.100 the wisdom that the Bible has to offer, 09:55.160 --> 09:56.180 because you're going to hear preaching, 09:56.600 --> 09:58.000 you're going to be around other Christians 09:58.000 --> 10:01.140 that are already ahead of you spiritually, 10:01.440 --> 10:03.300 they can lead you, they can help you, 10:03.380 --> 10:04.720 they can give you the wisdom, and so forth. 10:05.280 --> 10:07.000 And so yeah, it's important to read the Bible, 10:07.260 --> 10:10.600 but it's also important to be in the institution 10:11.100 --> 10:13.120 where the Word of God is the pillar and ground of truth. 10:14.240 --> 10:16.600 Where you have the preaching of God's Word, 10:17.000 --> 10:18.260 where you're learning doctrine, 10:18.260 --> 10:19.700 you're learning wisdom, and so forth. 10:20.100 --> 10:22.180 The point that I'm making here is that 10:22.180 --> 10:25.160 when you find yourself in a hard situation, 10:25.440 --> 10:26.360 a difficult situation, 10:26.760 --> 10:29.240 one thing you don't want to question is whether God is with you. 10:29.940 --> 10:32.800 And one of the sure ways for you to have confidence 10:32.800 --> 10:35.740 that God is with you is that you've made the Bible 10:35.740 --> 10:37.540 the centerpiece of your life. 10:38.120 --> 10:39.220 And if you're sitting there thinking like, 10:39.300 --> 10:41.660 I don't know if it is the centerpiece of my life. 10:41.840 --> 10:43.420 Good, I'm glad you feel that way. 10:44.040 --> 10:46.020 I'm glad you feel uncomfortable with that. 10:46.120 --> 10:47.260 I'm glad you're a little scared 10:47.260 --> 10:50.140 that maybe the Bible is not a centerpiece of your life 10:50.140 --> 10:51.700 because you need to start getting motivated 10:51.700 --> 10:53.640 to make it the centerpiece of your life. 10:54.340 --> 10:56.440 Okay, and start today, start tomorrow. 10:56.900 --> 10:59.040 You know, start this weekend, start reading the Word of God. 10:59.180 --> 11:00.880 Make it a discipline to read the Word of God 11:00.880 --> 11:03.280 so that you can be prosperous and succeed 11:03.280 --> 11:04.780 in whatsoever that you do. 11:05.320 --> 11:06.920 So he says here that the Lord is with Joseph. 11:07.120 --> 11:08.180 He was a prosperous man. 11:09.280 --> 11:11.420 And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. 11:11.720 --> 11:12.920 Now, before I move on here, 11:13.100 --> 11:15.300 let me say one more thing regarding the Lord being with Joseph 11:15.300 --> 11:16.100 and him prospering. 11:16.100 --> 11:17.960 You say, you know, you quoted some scripture that 11:20.320 --> 11:23.300 basically connected prosperity to the reading of God's Word, 11:23.400 --> 11:25.580 but Joseph didn't have that though. 11:26.100 --> 11:28.080 You know, Joseph didn't have the written Word 11:28.080 --> 11:28.940 in order for him to know. 11:29.280 --> 11:30.520 Well, when I say read the Bible, 11:31.020 --> 11:32.420 I'm not just saying just to read it, 11:32.480 --> 11:35.040 I'm saying you read it so that you can be in accord 11:35.040 --> 11:36.840 with God and his Word, right? 11:37.380 --> 11:38.840 His Word is his commandments. 11:39.340 --> 11:40.920 His Word is, you know, 11:41.240 --> 11:42.880 the structure of beliefs that he has, 11:43.080 --> 11:44.460 that he wants us to believe and so forth. 11:44.460 --> 11:46.860 So what we're saying here is that you need to be 11:46.860 --> 11:47.940 in agreement with God. 11:48.840 --> 11:50.680 And that's exactly what Joseph is doing. 11:50.960 --> 11:52.340 You know, he may not have the written Word, 11:52.400 --> 11:54.240 but he is walking with God 11:54.240 --> 11:57.000 because he's living a life in accordance to him 11:57.000 --> 11:57.640 and his commandments. 11:58.900 --> 12:00.500 The revealed will of God 12:00.500 --> 12:02.900 that he was given at that particular time, okay? 12:03.640 --> 12:05.200 So it says that he was a prosperous man 12:05.200 --> 12:06.820 and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. 12:07.440 --> 12:11.020 And his master saw that the Lord was with him 12:11.020 --> 12:13.460 and that the Lord made all that he did 12:13.460 --> 12:14.960 to prosper in his hand. 12:15.120 --> 12:18.000 Now, we don't necessarily know how Potiphar knew this 12:18.000 --> 12:20.280 because obviously Potiphar is not a believer. 12:20.800 --> 12:22.600 He's not a Christian, right? 12:22.860 --> 12:24.740 He doesn't believe in the God of Israel. 12:25.240 --> 12:28.040 It's likely that he's a polytheistic person 12:28.040 --> 12:28.980 because he's in Egypt. 12:29.560 --> 12:31.320 They believe in a plethora of gods 12:31.320 --> 12:32.480 and they're pagans or whatever. 12:33.240 --> 12:33.920 They're heathen. 12:34.360 --> 12:36.420 But he might be making this judgment call 12:36.420 --> 12:39.580 based upon the evidence of just the prosperity 12:39.580 --> 12:41.180 that he's witnessing from Joseph. 12:41.680 --> 12:44.640 So he obviously knows or sees 12:44.640 --> 12:47.520 that there is something divine about Joseph, 12:47.960 --> 12:49.860 something different about him, right? 12:50.720 --> 12:51.880 And it's not something, 12:52.060 --> 12:53.700 I don't think it's something that he's just like 12:53.700 --> 12:55.840 judging based off of just looking upon Joseph. 12:56.180 --> 12:58.360 It's the results that he's seeing, right? 12:59.100 --> 13:00.920 Because it says here in verse number four, 13:01.240 --> 13:02.320 Joseph found grace in his sight 13:02.320 --> 13:05.920 and he served him and he made him overseer in his house 13:06.540 --> 13:09.000 and all that he had he put into his hand 13:09.000 --> 13:10.200 and it came to pass from the time 13:10.200 --> 13:11.820 that he had made him overseer in his house 13:11.820 --> 13:13.160 and over all that he had 13:13.160 --> 13:16.980 that the Lord blessed the Egyptians house for Joseph's sake 13:17.480 --> 13:19.660 and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had 13:19.660 --> 13:21.700 in the house and in the field. 13:22.260 --> 13:23.860 So Potiphar's looking at Joseph 13:23.860 --> 13:25.120 and he's just like, I like this guy. 13:25.500 --> 13:27.260 There's something supernatural about this guy 13:27.760 --> 13:29.320 because ever since he came into my house, 13:29.420 --> 13:30.860 ever since he started working for me, 13:31.420 --> 13:32.560 everything's just going uphill. 13:33.300 --> 13:34.200 Well, yeah, uphill. 13:34.540 --> 13:35.320 Everything's going great. 13:35.640 --> 13:37.040 Everything is prospering. 13:37.280 --> 13:38.400 The resources are good. 13:38.560 --> 13:39.540 There's money in the bank. 13:39.540 --> 13:41.820 No one's stealing anymore. 13:42.340 --> 13:43.860 I'm not losing my resources. 13:44.460 --> 13:45.880 Everything's being accounted for 13:45.880 --> 13:48.300 and it seems as though it's all tied back to 13:48.300 --> 13:49.940 this guy right here, Joseph. 13:50.960 --> 13:53.780 So he sees that there's something divine about him 13:53.780 --> 13:54.480 and you know what? 13:54.900 --> 13:56.580 The saying could be said of Christians today 13:56.580 --> 13:57.480 if you do it right. 13:59.220 --> 14:02.800 Meaning that it should be that whatever area we're in, 14:03.140 --> 14:05.240 we need to make sure that we are a blessing 14:05.720 --> 14:08.100 in our families, at our jobs, 14:08.100 --> 14:10.300 whatever arena you find yourself in, 14:10.580 --> 14:12.340 you need to make sure that people around you 14:12.340 --> 14:14.900 experience the fallout of God's blessing on your life. 14:15.540 --> 14:15.800 Okay?
