WEBVTT 00:00.080 --> 00:00.600 Amen. 00:00.780 --> 00:02.940 I want to thank Pastor Shelley for the invitation to preach. 00:03.380 --> 00:04.640 We're in Leviticus 19. 00:04.860 --> 00:06.400 Let's look down at verse 19. 00:06.620 --> 00:13.080 The Bible reads, You shall keep my statutes, thou shalt not let thy cattle gender, that's 00:13.080 --> 00:20.140 talking about breeding, with a diverse kind, thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled 00:20.140 --> 00:25.820 seed, neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee. 00:25.820 --> 00:33.440 So we have a component here of the holiness code and in the Old Testament you've got different 00:33.940 --> 00:34.800 sets of laws. 00:35.000 --> 00:39.800 You have the moral law, you have ceremonial laws, you have feast days, etc. 00:40.860 --> 00:45.840 And when it comes to these ceremonial laws, you know, the New Testament makes it clear 00:45.840 --> 00:51.580 that they have been done away with in Christ, but that doesn't mean that there aren't spiritual 00:51.580 --> 00:55.680 applications and truths that we can extract from a passage like this. 00:56.020 --> 00:59.360 And in this section it says, You shall keep my statutes. 00:59.540 --> 01:01.960 And then it lists a bunch of improper mixtures. 01:02.460 --> 01:07.400 So things that shouldn't be combined together, they should remain separate. 01:07.860 --> 01:14.640 It lists several different, you know, items here and statutes where God is saying, 01:15.020 --> 01:17.080 do not mix these things together. 01:18.120 --> 01:19.280 What do we see? 01:19.280 --> 01:22.280 Well, first of all, it says, You shall keep my statutes. 01:22.720 --> 01:25.660 It's going to go into statutes on improper mixing. 01:26.320 --> 01:29.900 And then it says, you know, no breeding different kinds of animals. 01:31.320 --> 01:36.260 So again, gender is referring to breeding and it's saying, you know, you have one kind 01:36.260 --> 01:40.060 of animal, it shouldn't be breeding with another kind of animal. 01:41.080 --> 01:46.880 This can produce like a weird sterile hybrid of some kind, so you don't want that to 01:46.880 --> 01:47.140 happen. 01:47.140 --> 01:49.120 It talks about no mingled seed. 01:49.260 --> 01:51.580 You don't want to sow your field with mingled seed. 01:52.480 --> 01:57.820 And then it talks about no woollen and linen being mixed together as well in a garment. 01:58.380 --> 02:03.460 Now when the Bible uses the term mingling, it's talking about mixing, combining, blending. 02:04.160 --> 02:10.020 And look, in some instances, God is saying, you have two mutually exclusive options. 02:10.440 --> 02:11.780 You have to pick one. 02:12.260 --> 02:13.700 You can't combine the two. 02:13.700 --> 02:15.880 It's one or the other. 02:16.980 --> 02:18.480 Binary options here. 02:18.940 --> 02:23.700 Why? Because you may have two options that are incompatible with each other and so you 02:23.700 --> 02:24.500 can't have both. 02:25.020 --> 02:29.740 Let's look at Deuteronomy 22 and we'll get another angle of this passage right here. 02:30.220 --> 02:35.860 Because in Deuteronomy, it restates the holiness code with a little bit different 02:35.860 --> 02:41.220 wording, but it's still a warning here for the next hour giving a dissertation on farming and livestock. 02:52.840 --> 02:57.140 I would imagine that if I did that, there would probably be a lot of sleeping heads. 02:57.900 --> God's saying practically because the practical 03:06.060 --> 03:09.500 truth can help us to extract spiritual truths. 03:09.500 --> 03:13.480 And again, certain mixtures are forbidden. 03:14.280 --> 03:15.180 Now, not every mixture. 03:15.340 --> 03:20.020 It's not like all mixing is wrong, but there are some cases where it is wrong. 03:20.320 --> 03:23.500 And in Deuteronomy 22, we get an example of that. 03:24.360 --> 03:26.300 Now, verse five talks about not cross-dressing. 03:26.440 --> 03:27.580 I just wanted to make that point. 03:28.420 --> 03:30.240 If you're a man, you wear man's clothing. 03:30.780 --> 03:33.540 And if you're a woman, you wear woman's clothing. 03:33.860 --> 03:35.020 How about that for not mixing? 03:35.780 --> 03:38.280 Our society needs to get that through its thick skull. 03:38.280 --> 03:41.280 That men should dress like men and women should dress like women. 03:41.420 --> 03:42.960 This shouldn't be a controversial point. 03:43.160 --> So look what it says in verse number nine. 03:54.720 --> 03:57.660 The Bible reads in Deuteronomy 22 and verse nine. 03:58.360 --> 04:02.300 Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with diverse seeds, 04:02.460 --> 04:05.340 lest the fruit of thy seed, which thou hast sown in the fruit of thy vineyard. 04:05.360 --> 04:07.020 Notice, be defiled. 04:07.020 --> 04:10.420 So you don't want to have an improper mixture of seeds 04:10.420 --> 04:13.820 because the result will be a defiled product. 04:14.540 --> 04:19.760 It says in verse 10, thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. 04:20.000 --> 04:24.700 And so this is distinct here, whereas in Leviticus it was talking about, 04:24.800 --> 04:27.340 you don't want to cross-breed animals. 04:28.040 --> 04:32.800 Here it's saying you don't want the ox and the ass to be plowing together. 04:33.320 --> 04:36.400 And ass, of course, in reference to a donkey. 04:36.400 --> 04:40.380 Verse 11, thou shalt not wear a garment of diverse sorts 04:40.380 --> 04:43.380 as of woollen and linen together. 04:43.780 --> 04:47.680 So no diverse seeds, lest the fruit be defiled. 04:47.780 --> 04:50.340 You have no plowing of the ox and the ass together. 04:50.800 --> 04:53.620 And then you don't want woollen and linen to be mixed as well. 04:53.740 --> 04:58.620 And the title of my sermon is, these things cannot be mixed. they can combine it with B and be right with God. 05:19.820 --> 05:23.020 But that's not how it works in certain situations. 05:24.060 --> 05:27.460 And I'm going to talk about exactly what those are here in just a minute. 05:27.720 --> 05:29.340 But let's go back to Leviticus 19. 05:29.980 --> 05:33.720 Again, these things cannot be mixed. 05:34.800 --> 05:37.920 I'm talking about mutually How about in the book of Revelation, 05:46.020 --> 05:48.480 when he rebukes the church at Laodicea, 05:48.880 --> 05:51.960 and he says, hey, I would that you were either cold or hot. 05:52.620 --> 05:53.740 But you're lukewarm. 05:54.160 --> 05:55.180 It's like, pick a side. 05:55.780 --> 05:56.560 You can't have both. 05:57.060 --> 05:57.940 Which one do you want to be? 05:58.240 --> 06:00.720 Do you want to be zealous and hot for the things of God 06:00.720 --> 06:02.840 and on fire for the things of God? 06:02.840 --> 06:04.860 Or do you want to be lukewarm? 06:05.220 --> 06:07.300 Do you want to be on autopilot spiritually 06:07.880 --> 06:11.120 and not accomplishing much and kind of just going through the motions? 06:11.960 --> 06:15.300 And we as Christians should strive to be hot. 06:15.620 --> 06:17.460 We should strive to be zealous. 06:17.860 --> 06:20.420 It shouldn't be said of us that we're Laodicean Christians. 06:20.680 --> 06:23.640 I know that the old IFB likes to pretend 06:23.640 --> 06:26.000 that we're in the Laodicean church age. 06:26.300 --> 06:28.660 But I would say to them, speak for yourself. 06:30.200 --> 06:34.400 I don't see any Laodicean church age in front of me right now on a Sunday night. 06:34.680 --> 06:38.260 I see people who are zealous for the things of God as it should be. 06:38.360 --> 06:39.480 All of us can improve though. 06:39.580 --> 06:40.960 We all have a lot of work to do. 06:41.040 --> 06:44.720 We shouldn't be satisfied with where we're at in terms of our zeal. 06:45.340 --> 06:49.400 And so we should take passages like that as an admonition for us. 06:50.280 --> 06:53.100 In Mark 2, I had you turn back to Leviticus 19. 06:53.760 --> 06:55.800 Jesus said this though, I'll quote it for you. 06:55.800 --> 06:59.460 No man also soweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment. 06:59.920 --> 07:03.880 Else the new piece that filled it up, take it away from the old, and the rent is made worse. 07:04.060 --> 07:06.320 And no man puteth new wine into old bottles. 07:06.780 --> 07:12.680 Else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred. 07:12.940 --> 07:16.040 But new wine must be put into new bottles. 07:16.380 --> 07:17.820 So again, Jesus, he did preach. 07:18.260 --> 07:21.160 Certain things cannot be mixed in this parable. 07:21.460 --> 07:25.600 And he talks about you don't want to put a new cloth in an old garment. 07:25.800 --> 07:30.420 He says you don't want to put new wine into old bottles. 07:30.720 --> 07:33.500 These things should remain separate from each other. 07:33.740 --> 07:35.160 They shouldn't be mixed. 07:35.280 --> 07:36.640 You can't mix these things. 07:36.840 --> 07:41.380 And you know, it kind of reminds me of these bozos who want to combine 07:41.380 --> 07:47.100 the Old Testament law that has been done away with and the New Testament. 07:47.860 --> 07:52.380 And they basically want to just destroy the distinction between these two 07:52.380 --> 07:57.760 and sort of improperly combine them together and make the claim that you have to follow 07:57.760 --> 08:01.340 Old Covenant law that has been done away and fulfilled in Christ. 08:01.720 --> 08:06.320 Things like the meats and the drinks, the diverse washings, the carnal ordinances. 08:07.700 --> 08:13.660 And some of them will go even so far as to claim that the name of Jesus is wrong 08:13.660 --> 08:15.640 and that it should be Yeshua. 08:16.600 --> 08:18.700 I had somebody preach this to me. 08:19.280 --> 08:24.320 I got in an Uber in California and I was thinking to myself, you know what? 08:24.680 --> 08:27.160 How cool would it be to get the Uber driver saved? 08:28.240 --> 08:30.360 But unfortunately for me, that didn't happen. 08:30.440 --> 08:33.940 Instead, that guy wanted to preach to me and he wanted to preach about 08:33.940 --> 08:37.340 blending the Old and New Covenant together and this Yeshua trash. 08:38.400 --> 08:42.160 Now the Bible says no man by the spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed. 08:42.420 --> 08:48.020 I find it personally offensive for somebody to tell me that Jesus's name shouldn't be Jesus. 08:48.700 --> 08:50.120 It's personally offensive. 08:50.640 --> 08:54.300 Look, there's tons of jokes that you could make and I'm going to laugh along right with you, 08:54.360 --> 08:58.940 but you don't mess with the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and expect me to be okay with it. 09:00.040 --> 09:06.000 And in fact, as I'm sitting in the car, sometimes you have intrusive thoughts and 09:08.160 --> 09:14.940 I kind of looked at the door handle and I thought to myself, you know, I could open it 09:16.200 --> 09:17.680 and get out, right? 09:18.700 --> 09:20.900 But needless to say, I didn't jump out of the car. 09:21.100 --> 09:24.240 I stayed in and I did argue with the guy. 09:25.640 --> 09:28.140 But regardless, we could all move on from that story. 09:28.220 --> 09:33.200 The point is there's people out there who preach this trash and it deserves to be rebuked. 09:33.280 --> 09:34.940 They're called Judaizers folks. 09:35.720 --> 09:38.840 These are the Judaizers today and they don't understand this concept 09:38.840 --> 09:43.720 that you can't mix that which is not supposed to be mixed, which God said not to. 09:43.720 --> 09:48.560 The reality is there are elements of the old covenant that have been done away with 09:48.560 --> 09:51.320 and so we don't have to follow them. 09:51.360 --> 09:55.200 The Bible says which stood only in meats and drinks and diverse washings and carnal 09:55.200 --> 10:00.520 ordinances, which were imposed on them until the time of Reformation Calvary. 10:01.020 --> 10:08.640 And so there's been a change of the law and the thing is a good way to help you understand 10:08.640 --> 10:14.180 this would be like, let's say you have, you know, you're working and you have a boss who leaves 10:14.180 --> 10:15.960 and now you have a new boss come in. 10:16.400 --> 10:16.840 Well, here's the thing. 10:16.920 --> 10:22.660 The new boss isn't going to necessarily restate everything that the old boss had in place 10:22.660 --> 10:25.980 in terms of rules and statutes and hours and things like that, 10:26.000 --> 10:28.840 but you could expect them to tell you what did change. 10:29.180 --> 10:31.620 And when it comes to the old covenant and new covenant, 10:31.860 --> 10:34.140 the New Testament tells us what changed. 10:34.140 --> 10:38.860 Where it's silent, we can conclude that it must be the same. 10:39.680 --> 10:42.660 So let's look at Leviticus 19 and verse 19 here. 10:43.400 --> 10:44.500 Again, it says, 10:44.660 --> 10:48.440 He shall keep my statutes thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind. 10:49.040 --> 10:51.360 Thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed. 10:51.560 --> 10:55.440 Neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee. 10:56.320 --> 10:59.140 And look, there's carnal reasons for this. 10:59.600 --> 11:03.320 If you have mingled seed, the product is going to compete for sunlight. 11:03.320 --> 11:08.240 It'll compete for soil and nutrients and things of that nature. 11:08.580 --> 11:10.760 And it'll just not work. 11:11.320 --> 11:13.740 You could have a messy harvest, disunity. 11:13.940 --> 11:14.920 It might not even grow. 11:15.960 --> 11:19.480 The ox and the ass, if they're plowing together, they have different strengths. 11:19.700 --> 11:22.140 And so the ass will be left behind or killed. 11:23.180 --> 11:26.580 If you crossbreed, you could have a weird hybrid that's sterile. 11:27.960 --> 11:32.360 And woollen and linen creates a garment that is cheap 11:32.360 --> 11:35.560 and of a very low quality and easily rips. 11:36.220 --> 11:39.420 Now let's look at Romans 11 and we'll get into some spiritual application. 11:39.620 --> 11:40.520 Romans chapter 11. 11:41.360 --> 11:43.740 So the first thing that the Bible tells us is, 11:44.140 --> 11:47.000 Neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee. 11:47.620 --> 11:51.880 Linen is plant-based and this represents works. 11:52.720 --> 11:56.180 Whereas woollen is what you would find on a sheep, 11:56.340 --> 12:00.280 this represents the imputed righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. 12:00.280 --> 12:04.600 We are all sheep spiritually and we have his imputed righteousness on us. 12:04.800 --> 12:08.940 And the first point is this, you can't mix faith and works for salvation. 12:09.280 --> 12:13.920 You can't mix faith and works for salvation. 12:14.260 --> 12:16.640 And I realize I'm talking to a saved audience here, 12:16.720 --> 12:21.860 but for us we need to make sure that we emphasize this when we get other people saved. 12:21.940 --> 12:23.740 Because we don't want them to be confused. 12:24.120 --> 12:26.800 We don't want them to think that they can just add Jesus 12:26.800 --> 12:29.660 to whatever false religion they currently believe. 12:29.660 --> 12:31.960 But rather they have to actually change their mind. 12:32.660 --> 12:36.220 Now in Romans 11 the Bible makes this clear when it says in verse 5, 12:36.780 --> 12:42.080 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 12:42.860 --> 12:49.700 And if by grace then is it no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace. 12:49.860 --> 12:56.040 But if it be of works then is it no more grace, otherwise work is no more work. 12:56.040 --> 13:00.180 So notice salvation can only be faith or works. 13:00.420 --> 13:03.200 They cannot be blended together. 13:03.440 --> 13:05.560 They cannot be mixed together. 13:05.860 --> 13:08.820 These are mutually exclusive options. 13:09.140 --> 13:12.780 You have to pick the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, 13:13.140 --> 13:17.980 his blood shed for us at Calvary or your works, not both of them. 13:18.100 --> 13:24.080 And Romans 11 makes that crystal clear that when you mix these two concepts together 13:24.080 --> 13:26.100 it is insufficient to save. 13:27.020 --> 13:32.120 Just as sure as that garment of woollen and linen is what I would describe, 13:32.220 --> 13:34.580 and the Bible describes it, strange apparel. 13:34.780 --> 13:38.740 I think that the Bible makes reference to this in Zephaniah chapter 1 13:38.740 --> 13:43.760 when it talks about people receiving the judgment of God who have on strange apparel. 13:44.040 --> 13:45.620 And it is strange apparel. 13:45.740 --> 13:50.220 Those who are walking around with woollen and linen is easily damaged, easily torn. 13:50.400 --> 13:52.380 That's not the imputed righteousness of Christ. 13:52.380 --> 13:55.780 Let's look at Galatians 5 together, Galatians chapter 5. 13:56.780 --> 14:00.160 Meanwhile, I'll read to you this verse where it says, 14:00.440 --> 14:03.720 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, 14:04.100 --> 14:06.920 but by the faith of Jesus Christ. 14:07.120 --> 14:12.140 Even we have believed in Jesus Christ that we might be justified by the faith of Christ 14:12.140 --> 14:18.200 and not by the works of the law, for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 14:18.840 --> 14:21.320 I don't know how many times the Bible has to tell you this. 14:21.320 --> 14:28.620 It's just over and over and over again that the Scripture says faith not works. 14:29.020 --> 14:31.020 You cannot combine the two. 14:31.480 --> 14:32.440 That's strange apparel. 14:32.880 --> 14:35.000 That's woollen and linen trusting in their ability to be good, 14:58.220 --> 15:00.280 the Bible says they are fallen from grace. 15:00.400 --> 15:02.280 Now you have to understand that, 15:02.860 --> 15:03.680 see the Bible says, 15:04.760 --> 15:08.280 the grace of God which bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men. 15:08.780 --> 15:10.660 Now those who've rejected that grace, 15:10.920 --> 15:12.960 they've rejected the gospel in God, 15:13.960 --> 15:18.320 they've fallen from grace because they're not trusting in that to be saved. 15:18.320 --> 15:21.040 Now some people will twist this and take it out of context 15:21.040 --> 15:23.500 to teach that you could lose your salvation 15:23.500 --> 15:27.500 when in fact the passage is actually talking about them. 15:28.320 --> 15:30.980 It's talking about them and yet they want to use it 15:30.980 --> 15:34.620 to attack us when in reality it condemns them 15:34.620 --> 15:36.120 because they're trusting in the law 15:36.120 --> 15:39.000 and they've fallen from grace and they're the false prophet. 15:41.640 --> 15:43.960 Let's look at Romans 6, Romans chapter 6. 15:46.040 --> 15:50.080 So there has to be a total and complete trust in Jesus alone. 15:50.420 --> 15:52.920 We need to make sure we emphasize that out of solanings 15:52.920 --> 15:56.180 so that people are not confused because if there isn't 15:56.180 --> 15:59.200 then Jesus will say to them as he does in Matthew chapter 7, 15:59.420 --> 16:02.400 I never knew you because they're trusting in their works. 16:03.960 --> 16:06.560 They talk about how have we not prophesied in thy name 16:06.560 --> 16:08.160 and then I may have cast out devils 16:08.160 --> 16:09.940 and then I named on many wonderful works 16:09.940 --> 16:11.260 and Jesus says I never knew you. 16:12.300 --> 16:15.780 Now Romans 6, I believe it talks about this as well in verse 3. 16:15.940 --> 16:18.000 It says Romans 6 and verse 3. 16:18.520 --> 16:23.400 Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ 16:23.400 --> 16:25.220 were baptized into his death? 16:25.740 --> 16:27.700 So how someone baptized into Jesus? 16:28.280 --> 16:32.060 Well, you have to understand that baptism is a full immersion. 16:32.440 --> 16:35.500 So for me to be baptized into Jesus, 16:36.540 --> 16:39.220 there's a figurative sense in which that can take place 16:39.220 --> 16:42.480 which is by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ 16:42.480 --> 16:44.760 and fully being immersed in Jesus 16:44.760 --> 16:48.220 rather than 50% Jesus, 50% myself. 16:48.700 --> 16:50.020 There has to be a full are going out with the New King James, 25:02.900 --> 25:05.240 other people are going out with an ESV, 25:05.480 --> 25:08.300 with an NIV, with these critical text Bibles. 25:08.640 --> 25:10.320 The
