Okay, we're in 1 John chapter 2 tonight and the title of my sermon tonight is they went out from us 00:05.620 --> 00:11.540 They went out from us verse 19 says they went out from us, but they were not of us 00:11.540 --> 00:17.860 For if they had been of us, they would have no doubt have continued with us 00:17.860 --> 00:23.320 But they went out that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us 00:23.320 --> 00:29.520 And what I want to preach about this evening is the subject of apostasy here in 1 John chapter 2 00:30.080 --> 00:38.140 Specifically verse 19 now this verse here has been misused in many different contexts by a variety of pastors and Christians 00:38.140 --> 00:46.420 And they often interpret this to mean that if you as a Christian if you get out of church if you stop serving God if 00:46.420 --> 00:50.360 You leave church if you stop serving God if you get involved in sin 00:50.360 --> 00:53.720 That is an indication that you went out from us 00:53.720 --> 00:58.320 Therefore it's also an indication that you're not really of us in other words 00:58.320 --> 01:03.460 It means that you're not saved, but that is a false interpretation of this verse and unfortunately 01:04.020 --> 01:11.260 You know it's misled a lot of people into thinking that you have to persevere in your works for Christ in order to maintain 01:11.260 --> 01:17.000 Your salvation this believe this Calvinistic belief that you have to persevere in your works 01:17.000 --> 01:21.860 You have to persevere in your service for God if you really want to demonstrate that you're saved 01:21.860 --> 01:29.340 Okay, and they often use this verse in conjunction with Matthew 24 that says they then endured to the end the same 01:29.340 --> 01:32.660 Shall be saved okay, and when it comes to Matthew 24 01:32.660 --> 01:37.840 we obviously understand that the context of the chapter is referring to end times Bible prophecy and 01:37.840 --> 01:39.300 specifically it's referring to 01:39.300 --> 01:46.080 The fifth seal in that context the fifth seal where Christians are being put to death on mass and the Bible saying there 01:46.080 --> 01:48.240 That if you're able to endure that persecution 01:48.240 --> 01:55.000 Until the end you will be saved meaning your flesh will be delivered from the persecution of the Antichrist 01:55.000 --> 01:58.860 Because that persecution according to the biblical timeline lasts for 75 days 01:58.860 --> 02:04.620 Then comes the rapture if you make it to the rapture guess what your flesh is saved from that persecution 02:04.620 --> 02:08.800 So Matthew 24 when it says they then endured to the end has nothing to do with salvation 02:08.800 --> 02:10.820 It has to do with the deliverance of the body 02:10.820 --> 02:17.260 But this is what people do they'll take scriptures completely out of context and they will apply them to other portions of scripture 02:17.260 --> 02:21.360 Such as what we see here in first on chapter 2 verse 19 and they'll say well 02:21.820 --> 02:26.200 You know if you really want to say that you're saved obviously we know that it's by faith 02:26.200 --> 02:28.240 We know that it's by believing in Jesus 02:28.240 --> 02:34.860 However, if you decide to get out of the congregation of God you start serving your sin 02:34.860 --> 02:39.520 You start doing things that are not pleasing unto the Lord first on 2 19 applies to you 02:39.520 --> 02:42.220 It's an indication that you're not really of us 02:42.220 --> 02:45.100 But this is a false interpretation 02:45.100 --> 02:50.940 That is heresy because quite frankly folks if you are saved if you're a believer in Christ 02:50.940 --> 02:56.500 It doesn't matter if you continue in the service of God or not because the Bible says that we Okay, very important to understand that now in light of that 03:56.280 --> 04:01.180 What is first John chapter 2 verse 19 referring to what is it talking about exactly? 04:02.000 --> 04:05.260 Well, we have to understand what he means by they okay 04:05.260 --> 04:12.020 And let me just teach you something real quick is that you know, a lot of times when people interpret the Bible false prophets 04:12.020 --> 04:15.220 Specifically they will often isolate verses 04:16.000 --> 04:18.960 And look if you isolate a verse you can pretty much teach anything you want 04:19.680 --> 04:26.440 If you remove it from its context of the verses prior the verses after if you remove it from the context of the chapter 04:26.440 --> 04:32.320 The context of the book the context of the Bible you can make that verse say anything you want 04:32.320 --> 04:37.500 Which is why we have to what compare scripture with scripture compare spiritual things with spiritual 04:37.500 --> 04:40.880 Why because out of the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established 04:40.880 --> 04:44.100 And you know that principle applies to Bible study as well 04:44.100 --> 04:49.280 Okay, we have a variety of scriptures that teach us explicitly what salvation is and this is not 04:49.280 --> 04:55.360 This is not in an application to salvation or to Christians when it says here they 04:56.520 --> 04:58.660 We know who this is referring to look at verse 18 04:58.660 --> 05:03.400 Little children. It is the last time and as you have heard that 05:03.400 --> 05:08.300 Antichrist shall come what is that talking about it's referring to the fact that in the end times 05:08.300 --> 05:15.020 There's gonna be a man known as the Antichrist also referred to as the man of sin the son of perdition 05:15.020 --> 05:22.580 The beast as we see in Revelation chapter 13 and he is going to come so even though the apostle John is writing this 05:22.580 --> 05:24.900 You know in the first century AD 05:25.420 --> 05:32.300 He's foretelling of a time in the future where the Antichrist will come and Antichrist is someone who is coming in the place of Christ 05:32.300 --> 05:35.540 He's obviously someone who's you know a contrarian to Christ 05:35.540 --> 05:40.260 He's against Christ, but it's also referring to someone who is coming in his place 05:40.260 --> 05:45.820 That is referring to the man of sin that we see in the book of Revelation. However, look what it goes on to say here as 05:46.940 --> 05:51.000 You've heard that Antichrist shall come even now are there many Antichrist 05:51.920 --> 05:55.660 So this is telling us that even though there's going to be a 05:55.660 --> 05:58.220 Main character Antichrist in the end times 05:58.220 --> 06:04.000 We don't have to wait for the end times to find out who that is because there's many Antichrist that even exists today 06:04.000 --> 06:10.420 There's many Antichrist that exist in John's day. This is referring to people who are coming in the place of Christ 06:10.420 --> 06:16.260 They're against the Lord Jesus Christ. He says here. Whereby we know that it is the last time verse 19 06:16.260 --> 06:21.180 They went out from us. Who are the day the Antichrists? 06:21.720 --> 06:25.500 Okay, those who are against Christ those who are coming in the place of Christ 06:25.500 --> 06:32.380 It's referring to false prophets false teachers. This is what it's being addressed here. I just got louder for some reason 06:32.380 --> 06:35.340 I don't know that my ears pop or they're like a speaker just turned on 06:36.820 --> 06:39.440 So it says they went out from us, but they were not of us 06:39.440 --> 06:45.420 So the implication here is that these Antichrists were not originally referred to as Antichrist 06:45.420 --> 06:52.180 They weren't referred to as false prophets and in fact they masqueraded as believers. Okay. Now. Who's the author of this book? 06:52.920 --> 06:53.120 John 06:53.700 --> 07:00.480 So if we're to look at John's life, who do you think he's referring to there? Well, obviously automatically you should think to yourself 07:00.480 --> 07:01.880 Oh, this is referring to Judas 07:03.120 --> 07:08.040 Judas Iscariot is a perfect example of someone who was among the twelve 07:08.040 --> 07:10.080 He was of the twelve 07:10.080 --> 07:15.660 He was given the apostleship by Jesus Christ, but he wasn't really of them now 07:15.660 --> 07:18.860 Was he as noted by the fact that he went out from among them? 07:19.360 --> 07:22.880 He says they went out from us, but they were not of us for if they had been with us 07:22.880 --> 07:24.360 They would have no doubt 07:24.360 --> 07:30.080 continued with us now let's go to John chapter 6 before I give more of the interpretation of 07:30.080 --> 07:33.000 Verse 19 here. Let's go to John chapter 6 if you would 07:34.540 --> 07:35.760 John chapter 6 07:36.480 --> 07:40.420 Now automatically we know that it's referring to Judas Iscariot, but did you know? 07:41.240 --> 07:46.180 There were other Antichrists other than Judas Iscariot who came out from among them 07:47.180 --> 07:52.280 Okay, because keep in mind it says Antichrist they went out from they went out from us for they were not of us 07:52.280 --> 07:55.360 For if they had been of us, they would have no doubt continued with us. Yes 07:55.360 --> 08:00.400 This applies to Judas Iscariot, but you know, there's a lot of people there are many quote-unquote 08:01.060 --> 08:06.300 Disciples that apostatized even during Christ's time now look at verse number 08:06.940 --> 08:11.720 59 it says these things said he in the synagogue as he taught in Capernaum 08:11.720 --> 08:19.500 Many therefore of his disciples when they heard this said this is a hard saying who can hear it? 08:20.040 --> 08:25.540 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it. He said into him that this offend you now 08:25.540 --> 08:26.300 it's important to know 08:27.380 --> 08:33.220 That you know I've often used this verse in a tertiary secondary tertiary way or you know 08:33.220 --> 08:39.160 We talk about hey is this offending you like are you are you mad that I said this are you offended at this? 08:39.240 --> 08:44.780 Are you being weak about this but really an offense in the Bible is referring to what a stumbling block 08:45.540 --> 08:47.560 So when you think of an offense in the Bible 08:47.560 --> 08:49.580 yeah, we often associate that with 08:49.580 --> 08:55.540 Hard preaching offending someone because it goes against the grain it goes against their ideology 08:55.540 --> 09:01.400 But an offense in the most literal way that it's being used in the Bible is referring to like a stumbling block 09:01.400 --> 09:07.920 So in other words, you know for example the Bible talks about Jesus Christ being the stone that rock of offense 09:08.540 --> 09:13.320 Meaning that when people come across him they stumble at the stumbling stone 09:13.320 --> 09:17.140 They're not willing to believe on him is what it's saying. Okay 09:17.900 --> 09:25.760 So what Jesus is preaching here in John chapter 6 is he's talking about salvation and he's using the illustration of 09:25.760 --> 09:29.400 drinking his blood and eating his physical flesh as 09:30.900 --> 09:36.580 Illustration of salvation. This is not teaching the false doctrine of transubstantiation is put forth by the Catholics 09:36.580 --> 09:42.960 Okay, and you know the Catholics will always point to John chapter 6. Oh John chapter 6. He says you got to literally 09:42.960 --> 09:47.880 Yeah, you know the Pharisees who were unsafe or the were also the ones who interpreted that passage just like that, too 09:47.880 --> 09:53.600 That should tell you something. Okay, and it's interesting that the unsaved people in 09:54.260 --> 10:00.300 John chapter 6 were the ones who interpreted just as the Catholics do and the ones that didn't interpret it that way were the actual 10:00.300 --> 10:04.900 Disciples Peter James John they said to whom shall we go for thou hast the words of eternal life 10:04.900 --> 10:08.120 And we believe in our shirt that thou art the Christ the son of the living God, you know 10:08.120 --> 10:12.720 They didn't say oh, you know, we believed that we got to eat your flesh and drink your blood to be saved 10:12.960 --> 10:17.920 They're referring to the eternal words that are coming out of his mouth because they actually understood what he was actually teaching 10:17.920 --> 10:22.700 so he's using this illustration in order to convey salvation and 10:22.700 --> 10:29.700 The disciples doesn't say specifically who but keep in mind during Jesus ministry. You know a lot of people following him 10:29.700 --> 10:31.680 What is the disciples someone who follows Christ a? 10:33.060 --> 10:36.020 Lot of the disciples they were like oh man, this is kind of hard, you know 10:36.780 --> 10:38.740 You know, this is a hard saying 10:39.260 --> 10:41.780 Who can hear it? They're like this is kind of tough 10:41.780 --> 10:46.520 I don't know if we can accept this and what's so hard to accept about salvation 10:48.020 --> 10:52.840 What's so hard to accept about the gift of eternal life? What he's explaining here and Jesus says 10:53.640 --> 10:57.380 You know does this offend you? He they're murmuring at it verse 62 10:57.900 --> 11:03.220 What and if he shall see the Son of Man ascend up where it was before so he's saying you know if this offends you wait 11:03.220 --> 11:04.120 Do you see me ascend? 11:05.380 --> 11:10.140 Okay, you're gonna stumble at that as well. What is Jesus saying if you're not willing to believe what? 11:10.140 --> 11:15.440 I'm saying now. You're not even gonna believe even if I ascend up into heaven and you're able to actually be hold it with your eyes 11:16.100 --> 11:16.660 All the way 11:16.660 --> 11:22.420 This is an important point here because we got to realize that when it comes to place in our faith in Jesus Christ 11:22.420 --> 11:23.880 We don't need any visible evidence 11:24.400 --> 11:30.580 All right, we walk by faith not by sight. How do you know that? But there are some of you that believe not 12:28.220 --> 12:28.780 Okay 12:29.380 --> 12:35.940 For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believe not and who should betray him 12:35.940 --> 12:40.580 We often use this verse to prove that Judas is scary was not saved and it's definitely true 12:40.580 --> 12:43.460 He wasn't saved. He didn't believe okay 12:43.980 --> 12:49.540 You know he is also the son of perdition. He is a first-century example of an antichrist 12:49.540 --> 12:55.060 Okay, but we see here that it's also applicable to some of the disciples now 12:55.060 --> 12:59.700 I'm not referring to the 12 disciples. I'm not referring to the 12. I'm not referring to the three 12:59.700 --> 13:04.260 But just keep in mind there were a variety of people who followed the Lord Jesus Christ 13:04.260 --> 13:06.560 Why do they follow him? Well because he fed them 13:07.140 --> 13:10.300 Well because he performed the miracles because they like what he was saying 13:10.300 --> 13:14.600 But when it came to a message like this in John chapter 6 it just oh, we're not going to cross that line 13:14.600 --> 13:19.920 This offends us. This is a hard saying who can hear it this and it's just a message on salvation 13:20.740 --> 13:26.380 He's like oh, you're offended. You're stumbling at this particular same 13:27.100 --> 13:30.200 This is demonstrating here that you don't believe okay 13:30.880 --> 13:32.620 Because it's just a message on salvation 13:33.360 --> 13:37.940 Verse 65 and he said therefore said I unto you that no man can come unto me 13:37.940 --> 13:44.080 Except that were given unto him of my father from that time listen to this 13:44.080 --> 13:49.320 Many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him 13:50.660 --> 13:53.720 What does this mean? It means they departed from the faith. That's what it means 13:54.360 --> 13:58.520 Okay, and I do believe that when it says many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him 13:58.520 --> 14:04.460 It's referring to people who essentially apostatized they went out from us for they were not of us for if they had been of us 14:04.460 --> 14:07.580 They would have no doubt continued with us continuing what in believing 14:09.020 --> 14:12.160 That's what it means to continue means to 14:12.700 --> 14:16.360 Continue to believe that Jesus is the Christ continue to believe that it's by 14:16.360 --> 14:21.740 Say salvation is by grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ meaning that if someone claims to believe that 14:21.740 --> 14:25.540 They profess to believe these things somewhere along down the road 14:26.110 --> 14:30.280 They stumble at that message. It's a demonstration. They never believed to begin with 14:30.280 --> 14:36.100 A lot of people have problems with this because they're like, oh, you know, no, it just means they lost their salvation 14:36.100 --> 14:41.020 Well, here's the thing. There's absolutely no example in the bible of anybody losing their salvation 14:41.920 --> 14:42.880 Does it exist? 14:43.940 --> 14:49.200 There's no illustration of someone losing their salvation. There's no indication of anybody losing their salvation 14:49.200 --> 14:51.740 There's just indication of people going apostate 14:53.460 --> 14:55.400 And it literally says here verse 64 14:55.400 --> 14:58.640 But there are some of you that believe not for jesus knew from the beginning 14:59.280 --> 15:04.380 Who they were that believed not and who should betray him meaning that at the beginning of the ministry of jesus christ 15:04.980 --> 15:08.720 When he collected the disciples he knew from the start these guys don't believe 15:09.280 --> 15:16.120 These guys are not saved. They're kind of going along. They're just playing along. They're making this profession of faith 15:16.660 --> 15:18.960 But they don't really believe in their hearts and look folks 15:18.960 --> 15:21.120 It's important to make a profession of faith for sure 15:21.120 --> 15:25.520 Which is why when we go out sowning we close the deal at the end of the gospel presentation 15:25.520 --> 15:27.800 And aid them in calling upon the name of the lord 15:27.800 --> 15:30.060 All right, because that's what the bible commands us to do 15:30.660 --> 15:34.360 But keep in mind folks that if thou should confess with thy mouth the lord jesus and 15:35.320 --> 15:37.800 Believe in thine heart that god would raise him from the dead. I'll show you safe 15:38.720 --> 15:42.620 For what the hard man believe it's not the righteous but with the mouth confession is made into salvation 15:42.620 --> 15:48.760 So yeah, you know if a person believes in their heart the natural byproduct of that is they they would ask for salvation 15:49.920 --> 15:54.560 But you know what there's going to be people out there who ask for salvation, but they don't really believe it in their hearts 15:55.140 --> 15:56.380 That's a legitimate thing 15:56.960 --> 16:04.380 Where people claim to believe these things and look we have to do our part to make sure that we're very thorough in our gospel presentation 16:04.960 --> 16:06.980 And that's why I think it's it's extremely important 16:07.400 --> 16:13.580 That when we are preaching the gospel that we communicate that it's by faith in jesus christ exclusively 16:14.300 --> 16:16.380 Meaning at the exclusion of everything else 16:16.900 --> 16:21.300 Why well because you know you'll have catholics that you'll witness to and they'll agree with you on everything that you're saying 16:22.360 --> 16:24.100 They'll agree that it's by faith in jesus christ 16:24.980 --> 16:26.740 They'll agree. They're like, oh, yeah, I believe that. Yeah 16:26.740 --> 16:28.560 Jesus it's by faith in jesus christ 16:29.040 --> 16:32.420 You know by grace through faith in jesus christ, but then you're like, yeah 16:32.420 --> 16:35.900 But it's at the exclusion of everything else including mary.
