I want to preach a sermon this morning on the 10 Commandments, and so the goal 00:06.640 --> 00:12.780 is that when we all leave here today that we're going to have a really, really good idea of what 00:12.780 --> 00:16.280 the 10 Commandments are, and we're going to hopefully even have them memorized whether you 00:16.280 --> 00:19.860 like it or not, all right? So we're going to work on the 10 Commandments. And the thing is, 00:19.900 --> 00:25.240 children, is that many adults, they break the 10 Commandments and they don't care anymore. 00:25.800 --> 00:30.760 And so the goal is for you to learn these while you're young so that hopefully you'll continue 00:30.760 --> 00:35.860 following them even when you become an adult. And the sad thing is that very few people care about 00:35.860 --> 00:40.100 the 10 Commandments. It used to be, if you went to a public school, the 10 Commandments were 00:40.100 --> 00:44.880 even hung on the wall. The 10 Commandments have been a major part of our culture and our society. 00:45.300 --> 00:50.380 And it's not to say that these are the only things God cares about, but they are emphasized 00:50.380 --> 00:56.540 in the Bible. They have a name of the 10 Commandments. They were written in a stone by God's finger, 00:56.940 --> 01:00.580 and the Bible says that he spake these audibly. Look at verse one again, 01:01.080 --> 01:06.160 and God spake all these words saying. So God spoke these words to Moses on the mountain. 01:06.440 --> 01:12.360 When Moses took the children of Israel out of Egypt, they eventually got to Mount Sinai or Mount 01:12.360 --> 01:19.420 Horeb, and Moses went on the mountain, and God met Moses on this mountain, and God spoke 01:19.420 --> 01:23.960 what we're reading here in Exodus chapter number 20. It's a very famous portion of scripture, 01:24.400 --> 01:29.560 and he even wrote these 10 Commandments with his finger into tables of stone and gave them to Moses. 01:29.960 --> 01:33.880 And so it's important for us to learn them. They are emphasized in the Bible, and they're 01:33.880 --> 01:38.780 very important to God. It says here in verse two, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought 01:38.780 --> 01:43.340 thee out of the land of Egypt out of the house of bondage. So he's saying, I got y'all out 01:43.340 --> 01:48.420 of Egypt. So this is really important. I've delivered you. So you need to then therefore 01:49.340 --> 01:54.600 harken to these 10 Commandments. And this first one kind of is related to, if you think about it, 01:54.960 --> 01:59.580 what he's saying. If all the gods of the Egyptians could not deliver the children of 01:59.580 --> 02:07.140 Israel, and they had no impact, they couldn't stop them from leaving the Egyptians, then we ought 02:07.140 --> 02:11.340 to harken to the God that delivered them, the God that saved them, the God that has 02:11.340 --> 02:17.300 rescued them from bondage and slavery and from Egypt. And so then he asks here in verse three, 02:17.460 --> 02:22.640 thou shalt have no other gods before me. And he's demanding that since he is the only God, 02:23.080 --> 02:27.880 and he has delivered them, and they are his people, that this is a reasonable request, 02:28.000 --> 02:31.980 that thou shalt have no other gods before me. Meaning that you cannot have multiple religions. 02:32.920 --> 02:38.200 You cannot have multiple gods. You cannot have multiple Bibles. You need to have one God, 02:38.760 --> 02:44.020 one Bible. You can't have any others and we shouldn't mix religion. And in this world, 02:44.100 --> 02:49.180 there are other religions. You live in America where Christianity is a big part of our culture, 02:49.360 --> 02:55.500 but not necessarily every American is Christian. And then we go into other parts of the world, 02:55.820 --> 03:02.000 there's very few Christians in some countries. Some countries worship a different God or a 03:02.000 --> 03:06.740 false God. And when it's a different God, that God doesn't exist. It's made up. It's fake. 03:06.740 --> 03:13.120 It's not real. And so God doesn't want us to worship a fake God or to have a different God. 03:13.340 --> 03:19.020 God doesn't want us to read other texts that are not the Bible. And you know, it's really 03:19.020 --> 03:24.480 important that we adhere to the King James Bible because this is God's word. All the other 03:24.480 --> 03:30.280 Bibles or texts, whatever you want to call them, because the word Bible just simply means 03:30.280 --> 03:37.340 book. It's kind of its root, basic level. And so, you know, some people might call their book a Bible, 03:37.500 --> 03:43.360 but there's only one Bible and it's been preserved in English in the King James Bible. And so that's 03:43.360 --> 03:49.260 why kids, we only use this book. We don't want to have any other gods before God. And so, you 03:49.260 --> 03:53.820 know, when I think about this commandment, I think about my Bible and I think about like, 03:53.900 --> 03:58.640 hey, we shouldn't have any other gods before God, you know, we should have no other gods. 03:58.640 --> 04:03.000 This is our God, you know, the God of the Bible is our God. And that's the only one we want to 04:03.000 --> 04:09.320 worship. Hey, if there's another text out there, like the Koran or something like that, that's trash. 04:10.660 --> 04:15.820 And since we're not supposed to have any other God, any other texts out there like a Koran, 04:16.200 --> 04:19.900 you know, this is what I think of the Koran, you know, I just think that we should just 04:19.900 --> 04:26.660 tear it up or rip it up, you know. Hey, I'm going to tell you something. The Koran is trash. 04:28.080 --> 04:34.080 It's literal trash. It should just be burned. Okay. The Koran, you know, why are we letting 04:34.080 --> 04:41.220 this stuff in America? Hey, let me tell you something. The Talmud is trash. It should 04:41.220 --> 04:48.120 be ripped up too. And just burned, you know, it's just mysticism. It's a horoscope. Hey, 04:48.220 --> 04:53.240 the Book of Mormon, which should be the Book of Moron, it's trash too. And yeah, we do burn 04:53.240 --> 04:58.920 those things. Now do we burn a King James Bible? No. That's what I've no other Gods before me. 04:59.200 --> 05:05.640 So we say, hey, this trash, we don't want this trash in here. We worship Jesus Christ. That's who we worship. We shouldn't have any other God. 05:38.600 --> 05:44.300 No other religion. All other religions are fake. Hinduism is fake. Islam is fake. The Mormon 05:44.860 --> 05:50.320 religion is fake. The Jews are basically atheists. They're fake. Their religion is fake. 05:50.680 --> 05:54.360 And, you know, people say, oh, there's all these religions. There's really not that many. 05:55.220 --> 06:01.040 It's basically just kind of like Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, atheists, you know, 06:01.100 --> 06:05.800 and then a few like fringe cults and weirdos. A lot of perverted versions of Christianity. 06:06.380 --> 06:09.160 But at the end of the day, there's not that many options. And let's be honest, 06:09.440 --> 06:12.600 this is way better than all the other options. It's the best text. 06:12.600 --> 06:16.940 It's the best thing that we have. Now, let's read our second commandment here. 06:18.100 --> 06:27.840 It says in the next verse, it says thou shalt not make under the any graven image. So, of course, 06:27.980 --> 06:33.180 image is something that we can see. It's something that we can look at. Graven, the Bible talks 06:33.180 --> 06:38.540 about wood or stone and to some kind of like sculpture. And again, obviously, there's a 06:38.540 --> 06:43.160 religious connotation typically associated with these graven images. But notice what it says. 06:43.340 --> 06:47.700 It says, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath 06:47.700 --> 06:53.040 or that is in the water under the earth, thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them. 06:53.420 --> 06:58.240 For I, the Lord thy God, am a jealous God visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the 06:58.240 --> 07:03.600 children under the third and fourth generation of them that hate me and showing mercy on the 07:03.600 --> 07:07.060 thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. Notice that God doesn't even 07:07.060 --> 07:12.900 just punish one generation for idolatry. He punishes multiple generations for idolatry. 07:13.820 --> 07:20.640 And so we don't want to be going backwards as a group of people. We don't want to be like the 07:20.640 --> 07:26.480 Gentiles used to be where they worshiped pagan gods and false images. We want to be 07:26.480 --> 07:30.960 Christians that deny those graven images and nothing to do with the graven images. 07:31.360 --> 07:35.040 Now, unfortunately, the children of Israel sinned. They broke this commandment. 07:35.620 --> 07:40.160 And so kings at certain times throughout history would have to rectify the situation. 07:40.320 --> 07:44.900 I want to go to 2nd Chronicles, chapter 34. You can keep a finger because we're going to be going 07:44.900 --> 07:49.080 to Exodus 20, the whole sermon, but I want to go to 2nd Chronicles for a moment, 07:49.780 --> 07:55.260 chapter 34. And I want to read about Josiah. 07:59.360 --> 08:04.060 Now, this is what I like about Josiah. He's your guy's age, all right? 08:04.500 --> 08:09.980 Look what it says here in verse 1. Josiah was eight years old. You know what? That tells me that 08:09.980 --> 08:14.720 even an eight-year-old can realize that idolatry is wrong because we're going to read about it. 08:15.020 --> 08:18.760 Josiah was eight years old. Keep that in mind. Who in here is eight years old? Anybody? 08:19.760 --> 08:25.580 We got a couple eight-year-olds. All right. Nice. See, that's how old Josiah was 08:25.980 --> 08:30.840 when he was the king. Isn't that crazy? Now, we're not going to make y'all a king, 08:30.840 --> 08:36.640 okay? But that's how old he was when he was king. It says Josiah was eight years old when he began 08:36.640 --> 08:41.160 to reign and he reigned in Jerusalem one in 30 years. And he did that, which was right in the 08:41.160 --> 08:46.280 side of the Lord. So is what Josiah going to do in this chapter right? Yes. And he walked in the 08:46.280 --> 08:49.680 ways of David his father and declined neither to the right hand or the left. For in the 08:49.680 --> 08:53.420 eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David 08:53.420 --> 08:58.120 his father. And in the 12th year, he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high 08:58.120 --> 09:02.400 places in the groves and the carved images and the molten images. And they break down the 09:02.400 --> 09:09.560 altars of Balaam in his presence and the images that were on high above them. He cut down and the 09:09.560 --> 09:14.980 groves and the carved images and the molten images. He break in pieces and made dust of them 09:14.980 --> 09:21.740 and strode it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them. So here, obviously he ages 09:21.740 --> 09:25.420 a little bit in the text. It says for in the eighth year of his reign. So maybe he's about 09:25.420 --> 09:31.000 16 when he actually enacts this. But hey, Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign. 09:31.380 --> 09:36.160 He realizes there's a lot of idolatry in the land and he wanted to cleanse it. And notice, 09:36.360 --> 09:41.940 I mean, in verse four, he breaks stuff. He cuts stuff down the carved images, 09:42.140 --> 09:47.100 the molten images. Notice this. He break in pieces and in some cases he was even able 09:47.100 --> 09:52.080 to make it turn into dust. And so, you know, what I thought we should do is maybe we should 09:52.080 --> 09:58.420 do that. All right? So I need an eight-year-old boy volunteer, all right? Look at what it says 22:09.200 --> 22:13.140 in verse number seven, thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, 22:13.600 --> 22:18.060 for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that takeeth his name in vain. Now, 22:19.580 --> 22:22.360 why would someone take the name of the Lord thy God in vain? 22:23.460 --> 22:27.120 And what does that usually look like? I don't even need this one, right? I'm just using it. 22:30.740 --> 22:33.360 Well, sometimes you're out there, you're working, you're just hammering. 22:33.920 --> 22:36.860 You got to hold that nail and then you just, 22:38.340 --> 22:42.780 but it's saying that you say God's name. Now, why would you ever do that? 22:43.420 --> 22:48.980 Is it God that did that to you? No. Is there anything wrong with saying Jesus Christ or God? 22:49.600 --> 22:54.820 No, but here's the thing. What we don't want to do is hit our thumb and then use his name 22:54.820 --> 23:01.180 because we're mad, because we're angry, using it as a bad word, taking it in vain, meaning 23:01.180 --> 23:06.160 there wasn't a reason to use his name in that sentence. And you know what the Bible says, 23:06.280 --> 23:10.540 God will not hold him guiltless that takeeth his name in vain. So we don't want to be guilty 23:11.060 --> 23:15.360 of doing such a thing. Now, as we're going through these 10 commandments, I've kind of 23:15.360 --> 23:20.220 tried to think about a way for us to have some hand actions to think about them, right? 23:21.360 --> 23:25.260 So the first one is that we shouldn't have any other gods before them, right? 23:25.480 --> 23:28.480 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. So when we do that, we're going to raise our Bibles up 23:28.480 --> 23:34.580 and I want all you kids to say it with me, okay? Ready? Thou shalt not have any other gods before 23:34.580 --> 23:39.680 me, all right? And then it's Thou shalt not make any graven image. So we're going to do a 23:39.680 --> 23:43.540 smash, all right? So we're going to say it. We'll try to say it together. Thou shalt 23:43.540 --> 23:49.280 not make any graven image, okay? And then we're going to cover our mouths and say 23:49.280 --> 23:53.580 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain and we're going to cover our mouth, 23:53.660 --> 23:59.600 okay? Ready? Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord God in vain, all right? So we've got some 23:59.600 --> 24:04.340 hand motions that we've been going through. The next commandment we're going to get to is the 24:04.340 --> 24:17.320 Sabbath day. He says here in verse 8, remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days 24:17.320 --> 24:21.920 the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it Thou shalt not do any work, Thou, nor thy son, nor 24:21.920 --> 24:26.660 thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within 24:26.660 --> 24:33.560 thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is in 24:33.560 --> 24:36.420 rest of the seventh day wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. So 24:36.420 --> 24:41.120 according to the Bible, in the Old Testament, they had to take a day off 24:41.580 --> 24:44.900 and it was the same for everybody. Everybody took the Sabbath day off. So they're not 24:44.900 --> 24:51.100 going to work, dads didn't have to go to work, and everybody's trying to take a day of rest. 24:51.680 --> 24:55.940 So it's not a bad thing, it's a good thing. Taking rest, they're not having to work, 24:56.080 --> 24:59.080 they're not having to labor, they're basically just being able to take a break. 25:00.340 --> 25:06.840 In the New Testament, the Sabbath is a picture of the gospel message, because what the Bible 25:06.840 --> 25:11.900 teaches is that salvation was accomplished through the work of God, that Jesus Christ died on 25:11.900 --> 25:15.880 the cross for all of our sins, and since he died on the cross for all of our sins and 25:15.880 --> 25:21.620 did all the work, and he rose again from the dead, all we have to do is just trust in him. 25:22.020 --> 25:27.780 And it's a picture of rest, that we're resting in Jesus Christ.
