different things 02:15.740 --> 02:16.800 on this in the past. 02:17.360 --> 02:19.900 And so my views are gonna be representative 02:19.900 --> 02:20.920 of what I preached tonight. 02:21.480 --> 02:24.480 I know in the past, I've had different opinions. 02:25.160 --> 02:27.940 Is it possible that what America did 02:27.940 --> 02:29.660 by separating Britain was wrong? 02:30.400 --> 02:30.780 I don't know. 02:30.920 --> 02:32.880 I've definitely considered that that's possibility. 02:33.560 --> 02:34.240 Is it right? 02:34.680 --> 02:36.200 I've definitely considered that as a possibility. 02:36.880 --> 02:39.120 But this evening, I really just wanna focus in 02:39.120 --> 02:40.180 on what the Bible says 02:40.180 --> 02:41.980 and what the justifications were 02:41.980 --> 02:43.080 from the American Revolution, 02:43.280 --> 02:45.120 what they believed were their justifications. 02:45.440 --> 02:48.100 Of course, we can then make our own interpretation 02:48.100 --> 02:49.620 of the facts and say, hey, 02:49.900 --> 02:51.780 what do I personally believe about that? 02:52.000 --> 02:53.960 But I'm gonna basically side with, 02:54.780 --> 02:57.440 in my opinion, that mostly what they were doing 02:57.440 --> 02:58.180 seemed right. 02:58.720 --> 03:01.700 And some of the principles that the Bible lays out 03:01.700 --> 03:03.220 and what their justifications were. 03:03.320 --> 03:05.760 Now, we kinda have hindsight as well 03:05.760 --> 03:07.680 to look at how things went. 03:08.000 --> 03:10.480 And we can see that America as a nation 03:10.480 --> 03:13.540 seemed pretty blessed post the American Revolution. 03:13.920 --> 03:16.240 And that God has used the American Revolution 03:16.240 --> 03:18.380 to create a Christian nation 03:18.380 --> 03:21.240 and a lot of Christianity and a lot of missionaries 03:21.240 --> 03:22.360 and a lot of prosperity. 03:22.780 --> 03:24.700 And while we don't necessarily judge everything 03:24.700 --> 03:26.580 by circumstance or by prosperity, 03:26.940 --> 03:28.720 it's definitely something to at least consider. 03:29.020 --> 03:30.440 And it's something to think about. 03:30.780 --> 03:33.660 And if we look at a conflict between Britain and America 03:33.660 --> 03:36.320 and we see one nation becoming more Christian 03:36.700 --> 03:38.600 and another nation becoming less Christian, 03:38.960 --> 03:40.380 one nation becoming more blessed 03:40.380 --> 03:43.380 and another nation becoming less blessed over time, 03:43.640 --> 03:45.940 well, we at least should consider those circumstances 03:45.940 --> 03:47.700 and consider those as factors 03:47.700 --> 03:49.680 as to how God perceives things. 03:50.560 --> 03:55.760 Obviously, when we talk about these situations as a nation, 03:56.180 --> 03:58.460 there's not something in the Bible that directly says, 03:58.560 --> 04:01.720 submit to Britain or submit to a king or to break away. 04:02.140 --> 04:04.420 So we have to basically just take principles in the Bible 04:04.780 --> 04:07.060 and try to apply them the best as we understand them. 04:07.240 --> 04:09.420 Now, here in Romans 13, the Bible's very clear 04:10.020 --> 04:12.260 that there is a hierarchical structure 04:12.260 --> 04:14.220 to power and authority on this earth. 04:15.140 --> 04:17.340 And that authority stems from God, 04:17.880 --> 04:21.200 that all power and authority ultimately goes up to the Lord 04:21.200 --> 04:22.640 and that he is the ultimate judge, 04:23.120 --> 04:24.780 the ultimate ruler, the ultimate God. 04:25.100 --> 04:27.440 He's the God of God, the king of kings, the Lord of lords, 04:27.800 --> 04:31.440 and that we are to appeal to the higher power in all cases. 04:32.040 --> 04:33.180 It says here in verse one, 04:33.260 --> 04:35.800 let every soul be subject under the higher powers 04:35.800 --> 04:39.000 for there is no power but of God, 04:39.180 --> 04:41.060 the powers that be are ordained of God. 04:41.440 --> 04:46.200 So in some ways, it seems like God is giving authority 04:46.200 --> 04:50.740 to every power that exists as a kind of a carte blanche idea. 04:50.900 --> 04:52.380 It's just kind of a general principle, 04:52.620 --> 04:55.560 meaning that whoever's in charge in this world, 04:55.820 --> 04:57.360 it's kind of like God saying, 04:57.440 --> 04:58.960 well, I'm letting this person be in charge. 04:59.520 --> 05:02.660 Now, does that mean that God is endorsing 05:02.660 --> 05:04.640 every bad leader that's ever existed 05:04.640 --> 05:06.440 and every bad decision they've ever made? 05:06.880 --> 05:08.100 No, I don't believe that. 05:08.100 --> 05:10.640 And obviously the anti-Christ will be in power one day 05:10.640 --> 05:13.360 but God's allowing the anti-Christ to be in power 05:13.360 --> 05:14.440 at least at the minimum. 05:15.140 --> 05:17.560 Now, do we have to obey an anti-Christ? 05:17.860 --> 05:20.860 Do we have to obey a Chinese tyrant dictator? 05:21.320 --> 05:23.400 Do we have to obey some North Korean dictator 05:23.730 --> 05:25.160 and do everything that they say? 05:25.600 --> 05:27.400 No, the Bible teaches that we're supposed to appeal 05:27.400 --> 05:28.100 to the higher power. 05:28.400 --> 05:31.040 So even if you have an earthly authority 05:31.550 --> 05:33.260 that is an illegitimate authority 05:33.260 --> 05:35.420 that does not mean you always obey 05:35.420 --> 05:36.860 every single thing that they say or do, 05:36.860 --> 05:38.480 we have a higher authority 05:38.480 --> 05:40.260 and we appeal to that which is higher. 05:40.680 --> 05:42.180 So if there is an earthly authority 05:42.940 --> 05:45.300 higher than another earthly authority, we obey that one. 05:45.600 --> 05:48.540 So you have maybe a cop, local law enforcement, 05:48.800 --> 05:49.480 that's an authority. 05:49.820 --> 05:51.780 We're supposed to obey them, generally speaking. 05:52.420 --> 05:54.120 Then you have, above them, their sergeant 05:54.120 --> 05:55.040 or you have their captain 05:55.040 --> 05:56.220 or you have the chief of police 05:56.220 --> 05:58.800 or then you have, potentially it depends on what state 05:58.800 --> 06:00.440 and what city and all their different circumstances. 06:00.840 --> 06:02.840 You may have other municipalities, 06:03.520 --> 06:05.820 you may have mayors, you may have governors, 06:06.380 --> 06:07.840 you may have the district attorney. 06:08.260 --> 06:11.880 Then you have, in America, beyond state powers 06:11.880 --> 06:13.400 and authorities, you have federal authorities, 06:13.640 --> 06:16.020 you could have supreme courts, you could have presidents, 06:16.320 --> 06:18.140 you could have all kinds of other governing bodies. 06:18.580 --> 06:20.260 Technically, in America, in theory, 06:20.780 --> 06:23.040 the Constitution is kind of like the highest 06:23.040 --> 06:25.820 of the law of the land that we should abide by 06:25.820 --> 06:26.460 and listen to. 06:26.800 --> 06:29.000 But even above that, as a Christian, 06:29.440 --> 06:30.940 we're supposed to go above the Constitution 06:30.940 --> 06:33.940 even to God himself and we're supposed to obey 06:33.940 --> 06:36.480 God the Father as the highest authority. 06:36.680 --> 06:39.820 So, no matter what authorities exist on this earth, 06:40.000 --> 06:42.160 they're supposed to be subject to anything that's above them. 06:42.900 --> 06:44.260 And notice we're supposed to be subject, 06:44.380 --> 06:46.980 let every soul be subject under the higher powers. 06:47.440 --> 06:49.740 So, you know, you children, you obey mom. 06:50.860 --> 06:52.740 She's your, you just submit yourself to mom. 06:53.320 --> 06:54.540 But here's the thing, technically, 06:54.720 --> 06:56.400 if there's a conflict between mom and dad, 06:56.940 --> 06:57.660 you obey dad. 06:58.500 --> 07:00.680 And then it's like, hey, if there's powers 07:00.680 --> 07:02.140 and authorities above your parents, 07:02.140 --> 07:05.280 then you obey the power authority above your parents. 07:05.720 --> 07:07.420 If you get married, you know, 07:07.640 --> 07:09.380 as a young lady, you obey mom and dad. 07:09.580 --> 07:11.460 But let me tell you something, if you get married, 07:11.640 --> 07:13.980 your husband is now a higher power than your dad. 07:14.660 --> 07:16.540 He goes above your dad, he replaces your dad 07:16.540 --> 07:19.460 in that higher architecture and you obey your husband 07:19.460 --> 07:20.940 over you would obey your father. 07:21.160 --> 07:23.280 And so, there's gonna be all kinds of different scenarios. 07:23.900 --> 07:25.580 So, from an American perspective, 07:26.100 --> 07:28.340 you know, if we go back to 1776, 07:29.140 --> 07:31.300 you know, they are under British rule. 07:31.780 --> 07:32.980 And they have a monarchy. 07:33.240 --> 07:35.140 They have a parliament and they have other things 07:35.140 --> 07:36.000 that are going on with their government. 07:36.100 --> 07:37.500 But generally speaking, they have a king 07:37.980 --> 07:39.500 and they're supposed to obey that king. 07:39.600 --> 07:41.040 They're supposed to be subject under that king. 07:41.360 --> 07:43.860 But here's the thing, the king is not the final stop 07:45.200 --> 07:47.340 for every single person, it's God. 07:47.520 --> 07:49.780 God still goes above a king. 07:50.380 --> 07:51.740 And so, we're supposed to obey, 07:52.180 --> 07:53.600 the powers that be, generally speaking, 07:53.760 --> 07:54.520 we're supposed to obey the king. 07:54.700 --> 07:56.700 If we had a king, we're supposed to obey him. 07:57.040 --> 08:00.080 But not ultimately, if there's a conflict 08:00.080 --> 08:01.120 with him and God's word, 08:01.780 --> 08:04.360 then we should appeal to the higher power, 08:04.440 --> 08:04.920 which would be God. 08:05.040 --> 08:06.840 This is a principle that we're learning in Romans 13. 08:07.420 --> 08:08.180 He says in verse two, 08:08.300 --> 08:09.600 whosoever therefore resisted the power, 08:10.060 --> 08:11.260 resisted the ordinance of God, 08:11.620 --> 08:13.500 and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 08:13.820 --> 08:14.840 So it's like God's basically saying, 08:14.880 --> 08:16.180 hey, if you resist a legitimate authorities, 08:16.620 --> 08:17.760 it can lead to your ultimate death, 08:18.340 --> 08:19.480 to a consequence of death. 08:19.720 --> 08:21.100 And of course, historically speaking, 08:21.480 --> 08:23.900 you go against the king, it's usually off with his head. 08:24.540 --> 08:26.020 And we see a lot of different rebellions. 08:26.220 --> 08:27.240 We see a lot of different people 08:27.660 --> 08:29.660 that are traitors or treasonous 08:29.660 --> 08:31.980 against their political situation. 08:32.420 --> 08:34.240 And they do die as a result of being 08:34.680 --> 08:36.160 against that legitimate power, 08:36.320 --> 08:37.320 that legitimate authority. 08:38.080 --> 08:40.360 Said verse three, for rulers are not a terror to good works, 08:41.000 --> 08:41.680 but to the evil. 08:42.120 --> 08:43.600 Will thou then not be afraid of the power? 08:43.980 --> 08:44.620 Do that which is good, 08:44.740 --> 08:45.960 and thou shalt appraise of the same, 08:46.300 --> 08:47.880 for he is the minister of God to thee for good. 08:48.280 --> 08:49.800 But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, 08:49.940 --> 08:51.000 for he beareth not the sword in vain, 08:51.180 --> 08:52.240 for he is the minister of God, 08:52.440 --> 08:54.900 or avenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 08:55.280 --> 08:56.920 So again, the Bible's saying governments 08:57.340 --> 09:00.000 are ordained of God and their legitimate authorities 09:00.000 --> 09:01.460 to punish evil doers. 09:01.700 --> 09:03.380 And as long as they're doing such a thing, 09:03.520 --> 09:06.080 there's really no reason why you should ever 09:06.740 --> 09:08.380 not be subject to them, okay? 09:08.440 --> 09:10.620 There would be no reason not to be subject to them 09:10.620 --> 09:12.240 as they're punishing evil doers. 09:12.800 --> 09:14.860 And again, you know, generally speaking, 09:15.280 --> 09:16.420 governments are doing this. 09:17.020 --> 09:18.920 Generally speaking, I get there's exceptions. 09:19.220 --> 09:20.300 I get there's bad people. 09:20.560 --> 09:22.620 I get that there's corruption in our government. 09:22.820 --> 09:25.080 But can't we honestly be honest 09:25.080 --> 09:28.060 that if someone goes out and shoots somebody in America, 09:28.700 --> 09:30.160 cops will be called and cops go out 09:30.160 --> 09:31.040 to deal with that situation? 09:31.780 --> 09:33.060 And you know, I'm glad that, 09:33.140 --> 09:34.220 I don't have to deal with that situation. 09:34.600 --> 09:36.180 I'm glad that we're not calling you 09:36.180 --> 09:37.800 and say, hey, there was a murder down the street. 09:38.120 --> 09:39.020 Let's go deal with it. 09:39.500 --> 09:41.500 Like, I kinda appreciate that there's somebody else 09:41.500 --> 09:42.520 dealing with that situation, 09:42.860 --> 09:45.160 that they're dealing with the general rapist 09:45.160 --> 09:47.380 and drug dealers and a lot of the evil. 09:47.680 --> 09:50.080 Now again, are they doing an awesome job? 09:50.160 --> 09:51.700 Are they catching all of the criminals? 09:52.420 --> 09:54.500 Is there, is there, when they catch them, 09:54.500 --> 09:58.120 is our judges always giving a biblical punishment? 09:58.580 --> 09:59.880 No, obviously there's problems. 10:00.060 --> 10:01.340 But generally speaking, you know, 10:01.400 --> 10:02.280 our government's the one dealing 10:02.280 --> 10:04.340 with the nasty gross people of this world. 10:04.720 --> 10:06.600 They're the ones having to deal with a lot of the problems. 10:06.920 --> 10:10.600 Now again, do they allow cartels and drug traffickers 10:10.600 --> 10:13.100 and people that they like to still kinda do their thing? 10:13.380 --> 10:15.200 And yes, I get that there's corruption. 10:15.380 --> 10:16.640 Nobody's denying corruption. 10:16.880 --> 10:18.000 But we also have to admit 10:18.000 --> 10:21.800 that there are legitimate police officers and FBI 10:21.800 --> 10:24.060 and whatever that are dealing with some really bad people 10:24.560 --> 10:25.920 and I don't wanna have to deal with them. 10:26.220 --> 10:26.940 And so you know what? 10:27.120 --> 10:30.860 We can't just completely throw out all of the good 10:30.860 --> 10:32.820 that they're doing just because of all the bad 10:32.820 --> 10:34.740 that's also going alongside of it. 10:35.040 --> 10:36.480 You know, you call the cops basically 10:36.480 --> 10:39.620 when someone's killing somebody or it's really extreme. 10:40.000 --> 10:41.780 We don't wanna get them involved in petty, 10:42.100 --> 10:43.640 minor disputes or whatever. 10:44.020 --> 10:46.960 We get them involved when someone needs to die basically. 10:47.580 --> 10:49.000 And again, that's kinda what the Bible's saying. 10:49.100 --> 10:51.340 Like, hey, these guys are there to be your avenger 10:51.340 --> 10:54.260 and to basically punish people that are worthy of death 10:54.260 --> 10:55.320 and they should be doing that. 10:55.460 --> 10:57.260 We should have the death penalty for murderers 10:57.260 --> 10:59.480 and rapists and child molesters and all those kinds of stuff. 10:59.520 --> 11:01.320 They should be punishing these people. 11:02.380 --> 11:04.360 So again, appeal to the king 11:04.360 --> 11:06.100 because he's punishing evil people. 11:06.500 --> 11:09.120 What happens if he's not punishing evil people? 11:09.420 --> 11:11.080 What if he's endorsing the evil people? 11:11.380 --> 11:13.400 What if he's sickening the evil people on you? 11:13.940 --> 11:15.040 Well, then you have to ask this question, 11:15.280 --> 11:16.540 like, do I still have to obey 11:17.020 --> 11:18.280 or do I appeal to the higher power? 11:18.660 --> 11:19.880 And we'll get to that question a moment. 11:19.880 --> 11:21.680 Well, go to Acts chapter four, go to Acts chapter number four. 11:22.000 --> 11:23.180 We're gonna see in the New Testament 11:23.820 --> 11:26.220 a conflict of obeying the higher power 11:26.600 --> 11:27.600 and obeying the word of God. 11:28.100 --> 11:31.220 Now, I think, you know, when we're gonna look at this example, 11:31.400 --> 11:33.540 it's easier to look at the example we're gonna say 11:33.540 --> 11:35.260 and say this was a clear object 11:35.700 --> 11:39.020 or a clear situation where you would just rebel. 11:39.760 --> 11:42.160 You know, if it's the Christian doctrine 11:42.160 --> 11:43.220 or if it's preaching the gospel, 11:43.400 --> 11:44.360 well, then we shouldn't obey. 11:44.760 --> 11:45.700 And that's what the Bible teaches. 11:45.840 --> 11:47.120 Look at Acts chapter four, verse 14. 11:48.120 --> 11:50.560 And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, 11:50.620 --> 11:51.800 they could say nothing against it. 11:52.140 --> 11:54.060 But when they commanded them to go aside out of the council, 11:54.140 --> 11:55.220 they conferred among themselves saying, 11:55.840 --> 11:57.220 what shall we do to these men? 11:57.800 --> 11:59.120 For that, indeed, a notable miracle 11:59.120 --> 12:00.520 have been done by them as manifest 12:00.520 --> 12:03.160 to all them that dwell in Jerusalem and we cannot deny it. 12:03.580 --> 12:05.080 But that has spread no further among the people, 12:05.480 --> 12:07.080 let us straightly threaten them 12:07.080 --> 12:11.280 that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. 12:11.660 --> 12:14.320 And they called them and commanded them not to speak 12:14.320 --> 12:16.580 at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 12:17.300 --> 12:19.060 But Peter and John answered and said to them, 12:19.260 --> 12:21.400 whether we write in the sight of God to harken unto you 12:22.160 --> 12:23.860 more than unto God, judge ye. 12:24.320 --> 12:25.540 For we cannot but speak the things 12:25.540 --> 12:26.160 which we have seen in her. 12:26.260 --> 12:28.120 He says, hey, why don't you just figure this out? 12:28.420 --> 12:29.480 If God told me to do something 12:29.480 --> 12:30.880 and you're contradicting it, 12:31.180 --> 12:31.980 who do you think I should obey? 12:33.080 --> 12:35.120 And the answer is a rhetorical question, 12:35.260 --> 12:36.320 a rhetorical statement of, 12:36.640 --> 12:38.300 it should obviously be that we should obey God 12:38.300 --> 12:39.140 rather than men. 12:39.380 --> 12:41.920 And I think for most of us we could at least admit, 12:41.920 --> 12:44.560 hey, if they're telling us not to preach the Bible 12:45.040 --> 12:46.840 or to denounce Jesus Christ 12:47.340 --> 12:49.380 or to go against our Christian faith, 12:49.620 --> 12:51.440 then we are to take a stand 12:51.440 --> 12:53.520 and we are to stand for the Lord Jesus Christ 12:53.520 --> 12:56.100 and to preach the gospel and to obey God 12:56.100 --> 12:57.120 rather than men. 12:57.440 --> 12:58.680 And that is a biblical principle. 12:59.360 --> 13:01.020 But how far does this stretch? 13:01.380 --> 13:03.540 Look at chapter five and look at verse 27. 13:04.960 --> 13:06.460 Acts chapter five verse 27. 13:06.580 --> 13:07.360 And then when they brought them 13:07.360 --> 13:08.460 they set them before the council 13:08.460 --> 13:10.340 and the high priests asked them saying, 13:10.340 --> 13:12.140 do we not straightly command you 13:12.140 --> 13:14.800 that you should not teach in this name? 13:15.200 --> 13:17.080 And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine 13:17.080 --> 13:19.760 and tend to bring this man's blood upon us, 13:19.880 --> 13:21.940 then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, 13:22.240 --> 13:25.040 we ought to obey God rather than men. 13:25.140 --> 13:26.300 So here's just a clear statement. 13:26.740 --> 13:28.800 The first time they kind of give a rhetorical question, 13:29.460 --> 13:30.580 which should be obvious. 13:31.280 --> 13:33.180 Second time after they've done, 13:33.340 --> 13:35.180 after they've actually disobeyed the order, 13:35.280 --> 13:37.440 they've gone against the governmental
