00:07.400 --> 00:09.260 I'm gonna show you that it was actually the devil 00:09.800 --> 00:13.460 who led Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus 00:13.460 --> 00:14.940 at every step of the way, 00:15.180 --> 00:16.300 but I'm also gonna show you 00:16.300 --> 00:18.380 that that doesn't make him any less responsible 00:18.380 --> 00:19.440 for what he did. 00:19.560 --> 00:21.120 The fact that he was being controlled 00:21.120 --> 00:24.300 and manipulated by Satan is not an excuse. 00:24.480 --> 00:25.500 And I'm preaching this sermon 00:25.920 --> 00:28.780 in light of this whole Lindsay Clancy case 00:28.780 --> 00:29.960 that's been on the news 00:29.960 --> 00:32.160 that everybody's thinking about and talking about. 00:32.560 --> 00:34.180 And for those of you who don't know, 00:34.760 --> 00:36.420 Lindsay Clancy is a woman who admitted 00:36.420 --> 00:38.680 to murdering her three small children, 00:39.080 --> 00:42.740 but she pled not guilty by reason of insanity 00:43.340 --> 00:45.880 because she heard a male voice 00:45.880 --> 00:50.000 that kept telling her to do it and then to kill herself. 00:50.820 --> 00:53.060 And so you've probably heard about it in the news, 00:53.140 --> 00:55.060 but I just want you to kind of keep that situation 00:55.060 --> 00:57.840 in your mind as I go through this story 00:57.840 --> 00:58.860 with Judas Iscariot, 00:59.120 --> 00:59.880 because you're gonna see 00:59.880 --> 01:01.260 that there are actually a lot of parallels 01:01.260 --> 01:02.480 between these two things. 01:02.880 --> 01:04.740 So let's start out in John chapter six. 01:04.840 --> 01:06.140 If you flip back a few pages, 01:06.960 --> 01:10.240 I wanna show you an important foundational truth 01:10.240 --> 01:12.900 about Judas Iscariot that you never wanna miss 01:12.900 --> 01:14.440 when thinking about Judas. 01:14.780 --> 01:16.440 Go back to John chapter six. 01:16.540 --> 01:18.060 We're gonna start in verse 60. 01:18.540 --> 01:20.340 It says many therefore of his disciples, 01:20.520 --> 01:21.460 when they had heard this, 01:21.780 --> 01:24.980 said, this is a hard saying, who can hear it? 01:25.410 --> 01:26.920 When Jesus knew in himself 01:26.920 --> 01:28.480 that his disciples murmured at it, 01:28.540 --> 01:30.620 he said to them, does this offend you? 01:31.280 --> 01:32.920 What, and if you shall see the Son of Man 01:32.920 --> 01:34.320 ascend up where he was before. 01:35.040 --> 01:37.140 It is the spirit that quickeneth, 01:37.500 --> 01:39.280 the flesh profiteth nothing. 01:39.760 --> 01:41.580 The words that I speak unto you, 01:41.980 --> 01:43.820 they are spirit and they are life, 01:44.000 --> 01:47.380 but there are some of you that believe not. 01:47.780 --> 01:49.800 For Jesus knew from the beginning 01:49.800 --> 01:51.220 who they were that believed not 01:51.820 --> 01:53.480 and who should betray him. 01:53.480 --> 01:55.280 And so the Lord Jesus Christ, 01:55.440 --> 01:56.600 he's preaching to a big crowd 01:56.600 --> 01:59.480 and he says, look, some of you guys don't believe in me. 01:59.760 --> 02:00.820 You're not saved. 02:01.120 --> 02:01.780 You don't believe. 02:02.040 --> 02:04.300 And he also knew that one of those people 02:04.300 --> 02:05.320 who didn't believe in him 02:05.320 --> 02:08.680 was ultimately going to betray him. 02:08.760 --> 02:09.980 And that is Judas Iscariot. 02:10.000 --> 02:11.720 And so the first point I wanna show you 02:11.720 --> 02:14.700 is that number one is that Judas Iscariot 02:14.700 --> 02:16.280 was an unbeliever. 02:16.820 --> 02:19.240 He did not believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. 02:19.560 --> 02:21.280 He was unsaved. 02:21.280 --> 02:22.800 And this is long before 02:22.800 --> 02:25.720 he ever even thought about betraying Jesus. 02:26.140 --> 02:27.040 He's just an unbeliever. 02:27.440 --> 02:28.400 He's just not saved. 02:28.940 --> 02:29.840 And so here's the thing. 02:30.100 --> 02:31.940 The number one responsibility 02:32.500 --> 02:34.440 for every human being on this planet 02:34.440 --> 02:35.760 is to get saved. 02:36.520 --> 02:40.960 God has commanded all men everywhere to repent. 02:41.420 --> 02:42.440 And the Bible says 02:42.440 --> 02:44.600 neither is there salvation in any other 02:44.600 --> 02:46.520 for there is none other name under heaven. 02:46.700 --> 02:47.540 Give it among men. 02:47.820 --> 02:49.600 Whereby we must be saved. 02:49.990 --> 02:51.680 So salvation is not optional. 02:52.280 --> 02:54.900 Believing in Jesus Christ is not optional, right? 02:55.380 --> 02:58.520 We must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. 02:58.620 --> 03:00.940 So this is the mistake that Judas makes. 03:01.140 --> 03:03.240 And here's why it's such an egregious mistake 03:03.240 --> 03:05.980 is because he's literally hanging around 03:05.980 --> 03:07.900 with the Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh. 03:08.200 --> 03:09.760 He's hanging around with the apostles. 03:10.120 --> 03:11.880 He's hearing the greatest preaching 03:11.880 --> 03:14.180 that has ever been preached ever. 03:14.320 --> 03:16.060 And he's still not getting saved. 03:16.440 --> 03:17.820 Think about how wicked it is 03:17.820 --> 03:20.060 to hear the best Bible preaching ever 03:20.060 --> 03:21.680 and you're still not saved. 03:22.120 --> 03:23.420 That's Judas' mistake. 03:23.780 --> 03:25.640 That's where it all goes bad for him. 03:25.800 --> 03:28.400 And that is his own fault. 03:28.780 --> 03:29.180 Why? 03:29.420 --> 03:31.340 Because people believe what they want to believe. 03:32.020 --> 03:32.680 The Bible says, 03:33.060 --> 03:34.080 whosoever will, 03:34.660 --> 03:35.820 whosoever wants to, 03:36.240 --> 03:39.320 whosoever will let him take the water of life freely. 03:39.620 --> 03:41.700 Jesus said, you will not come to me 03:41.700 --> 03:43.040 that you might have life, right? 03:43.420 --> 03:44.700 He's saying that to the unbelievers, 03:44.860 --> 03:46.660 the Pharisees, the Jews that rejected him. 03:46.660 --> 03:49.120 And so, you know, the Bible says to the unbelievers, 03:49.580 --> 03:52.780 it says that they received not the love of the truth 03:52.780 --> 03:53.860 that they might be saved. 03:54.180 --> 03:54.820 And for this cause, 03:54.900 --> 03:56.540 God shall send them strong delusion 03:56.540 --> 03:57.760 that they should believe a lie 03:57.760 --> 03:59.560 that they all might be damned 03:59.560 --> 04:01.220 who believed not the truth 04:01.220 --> 04:04.660 but had pleasure in unrighteousness, right? 04:04.980 --> 04:06.660 People who don't believe in Christ, 04:07.000 --> 04:09.020 it's because they don't want to believe in Christ 04:09.020 --> 04:11.500 and that is a wicked attitude to have. 04:11.740 --> 04:14.400 And that's where Judas made his own choice. 04:14.720 --> 04:16.240 He made his own mistake here. 04:16.240 --> 04:18.740 Of not believing on Jesus. 04:18.960 --> 04:20.020 He's being rebuked here 04:20.020 --> 04:22.220 along with other people for not believing in Jesus. 04:22.520 --> 04:24.140 But jump down to verse 70. 04:25.280 --> 04:26.320 And it says in verse 70, 04:26.540 --> 04:27.260 Jesus answered them, 04:27.720 --> 04:29.640 have not I chosen you 12? 04:30.260 --> 04:31.740 And one of you is a devil. 04:33.000 --> 04:35.300 He spake of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, 04:35.660 --> 04:37.880 for he it was that should betray him, 04:38.240 --> 04:39.880 being one of the 12. 04:40.240 --> 04:41.700 And so the second thing I want to point out 04:41.700 --> 04:44.240 is that not only was Judas Iscariot an unbeliever, 04:44.240 --> 04:46.960 but Judas Iscariot was a devil. 04:47.400 --> 04:48.260 Now, what does it mean 04:48.740 --> 04:50.620 when Jesus says that he's a devil? 04:51.020 --> 04:52.500 Obviously this is not saying 04:52.500 --> 04:55.220 that he's a literal fallen angel 04:55.220 --> 04:57.800 or that he's a literal demon or something like that. 04:58.220 --> 05:00.360 When the Bible's calling him a devil, 05:00.660 --> 05:02.140 it's basically saying that he has 05:02.140 --> 05:04.280 the attributes of a devil. 05:04.620 --> 05:06.300 And the word devil itself 05:06.800 --> 05:11.160 literally means slanderer, accuser, adversary. 05:11.440 --> 05:13.220 So this guy's not just unsaved. 05:13.220 --> 05:15.560 He's also an enemy. 05:16.080 --> 05:19.800 He's also an evil adversary crept in unawares 05:19.800 --> 05:23.660 as a slanderer and an accuser, okay? 05:24.060 --> 05:26.180 Now let's jump over to the book of Luke. 05:26.380 --> 05:27.620 So go back to the book of Luke. 05:27.780 --> 05:29.200 This can be the left in your Bible. 05:29.640 --> 05:31.380 And let's look at Luke chapter 22. 05:31.580 --> 05:33.900 So we said, number one, Judas is unsaved. 05:34.180 --> 05:35.800 Number two, Judas is a devil. 05:36.660 --> 05:38.160 But number three, what I'm gonna show you 05:38.160 --> 05:41.820 is that Judas Iscariot was possessed by Satan 05:42.440 --> 05:44.320 when he made the deal to betray Jesus. 05:44.480 --> 05:46.280 So when he went and made the deal 05:46.280 --> 05:48.020 and agreed on the 30 pieces of silver, 05:48.320 --> 05:50.640 he was being controlled by Satan. 05:50.900 --> 05:54.040 And here's one of the scariest things about being unsaved 05:54.460 --> 05:58.240 is that you are open to demonic influence 05:58.240 --> 05:59.400 and demonic control. 05:59.840 --> 06:01.140 You see, those of us that are saved, 06:01.240 --> 06:02.520 we could never be demon possessed. 06:03.000 --> 06:04.520 Greater is he that is in us 06:04.520 --> 06:05.760 than he that is in the world. 06:06.240 --> 06:08.020 And you know, we in time past 06:08.020 --> 06:10.960 walked according to the course of the power of the air, 06:10.960 --> 06:14.920 the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. 06:15.160 --> 06:16.500 But those of us who are saved, 06:16.860 --> 06:18.920 we're indwelled by the Holy Spirit of God. 06:19.360 --> 06:20.520 But when you're unsaved, 06:20.920 --> 06:23.800 you are either knowingly or unknowingly 06:23.800 --> 06:25.720 a pawn of Satan in this world. 06:26.340 --> 06:27.480 Even if you're not demon possessed, 06:27.700 --> 06:29.520 you're still as an unsaved person, 06:29.840 --> 06:31.720 ultimately Satan's pawn. 06:32.040 --> 06:35.820 And you are liable to even be demon possessed 06:35.820 --> 06:36.960 if you're unsaved. 06:37.240 --> 06:39.900 Whereas getting saved is like a guaranteed 06:39.900 --> 06:41.100 insurance policy. 06:41.300 --> 06:42.700 I will never be demon possessed. 06:43.220 --> 06:45.520 Getting saved is a guaranteed insurance policy. 06:45.760 --> 06:47.120 I will never be a reprobate. 06:47.800 --> 06:51.000 You know, that alone should scare you to death 06:51.000 --> 06:52.900 if you're thinking, oh, I'm just gonna get saved later. 06:53.180 --> 06:55.360 No, the Bible says now is the accepted time. 06:55.700 --> 06:57.280 Now is the day of salvation. 06:57.560 --> 06:59.480 And you gotta believe on the Lord Jesus Christ 06:59.480 --> 07:00.800 and be saved immediately. 07:01.260 --> 07:02.640 And don't play around, say, well, 07:02.760 --> 07:04.320 think about it later, I'll worry about it later. 07:04.420 --> 07:06.920 No, no, it's easy to be saved, but you gotta do it. 07:06.920 --> 07:09.260 You gotta put all your faith and trust 07:09.260 --> 07:11.140 in Jesus Christ before it's too late. 07:12.060 --> 07:14.720 So look at the Bible here in Luke chapter 22 verse one. 07:14.900 --> 07:16.680 Now, the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, 07:17.040 --> 07:18.060 which is called the Passover. 07:18.620 --> 07:20.240 And the chief priests and scribes 07:20.240 --> 07:21.760 sought how they might kill him 07:21.760 --> 07:23.220 for they feared the people. 07:23.380 --> 07:25.360 So, you know, they can't just grab him 07:25.360 --> 07:26.920 and arrest him and broad daylight 07:27.400 --> 07:29.080 because people will defend him. 07:29.260 --> 07:30.220 It's gonna make a scene. 07:30.620 --> 07:34.520 And so then entered verse three, Satan into Judas. 07:34.520 --> 07:37.680 Notice Satan himself entered into Judas. 07:37.880 --> 07:40.980 So people are often possessed by devils 07:40.980 --> 07:42.840 or demons in the Bible, 07:43.340 --> 07:45.600 but you know, not usually are they gonna be possessed 07:45.600 --> 07:47.340 by the head honcho himself, 07:48.040 --> 07:50.260 the prince of the devils, Satan. 07:50.840 --> 07:53.920 And so Satan entered into Judas, surname to scarlet, 07:54.000 --> 07:54.960 being of the number of the 12, 07:55.380 --> 07:56.800 he went his way and communed 07:56.800 --> 07:58.120 with the chief priests and captains 07:58.120 --> 07:59.680 how he might betray him unto them. 07:59.980 --> 08:02.620 And they were glad and covenanted to give him money 08:02.620 --> 08:05.420 and he promised and sought opportunity 08:05.810 --> 08:09.160 to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. 08:09.480 --> 08:12.200 So, you know, a way to betray Jesus 08:12.200 --> 08:13.360 when people aren't around, 08:13.620 --> 08:16.280 because usually the only time they know where Jesus is 08:16.280 --> 08:18.680 is when he's in a crowd of people that would defend him. 08:19.060 --> 08:23.000 Whereas Judas can tell them a place and a time 08:23.000 --> 08:25.280 when they can catch him in the middle of the night 08:25.280 --> 08:28.560 by himself and take him and, you know, 08:28.640 --> 08:31.160 get him arrested and condemned and so forth. 08:31.160 --> 08:33.020 And so what I wanna point out here 08:33.020 --> 08:36.760 is that the premeditation of the crime here 08:36.760 --> 08:38.160 is prompted by Satan. 08:38.540 --> 08:39.700 This is the initial planning. 08:39.980 --> 08:42.880 But notice they have not yet agreed upon a time and a place. 08:43.440 --> 08:48.580 So far it's just, okay, I promise I will betray him to you 08:48.580 --> 08:50.840 and you give me 30 piece of silver 08:50.840 --> 08:52.880 and then I'm gonna look for an opportunity, 08:53.520 --> 08:55.780 I'm gonna look for a time and a place that will work. 08:56.220 --> 08:58.420 Okay, with that in mind, go to John chapter 13 08:58.420 --> 08:59.020 where we started. 08:59.580 --> 09:02.980 John chapter number 13, we're gonna see basically now 09:02.980 --> 09:06.100 that not only did Satan enter him 09:06.580 --> 09:08.560 and actually manipulate him 09:08.560 --> 09:12.000 as he was making the initial plan to do the crime, 09:12.160 --> 09:14.760 but now the actual timing of the crime 09:14.760 --> 09:17.340 when and where it's going to happen 09:17.340 --> 09:19.260 is also guided by Satan. 09:19.540 --> 09:21.520 Look at John chapter 13 verse two. 09:22.100 --> 09:24.840 This is the last supper and supper being ended, 09:25.440 --> 09:30.360 the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, 09:30.460 --> 09:31.860 Simon's son to betray him. 09:32.120 --> 09:34.420 So first Satan enters him 09:34.420 --> 09:36.480 and he makes the deal for the 30 piece of silver. 09:36.760 --> 09:40.580 Then later at the Passover meal that they're eating, 09:41.120 --> 09:43.380 now Satan puts upon his heart, 09:43.780 --> 09:45.820 now's the time it's gonna be today. 09:46.720 --> 09:49.120 Jump down to verse 27. 09:49.640 --> 09:53.420 It says after the Sop, Satan entered into him. 09:53.730 --> 09:55.600 So notice Satan is injuring him again. 09:56.980 --> 10:00.700 Then said Jesus unto him, that thou doest do quickly. 10:01.100 --> 10:02.180 And then look at verse 30, 10:02.560 --> 10:05.120 he then having received the Sop went immediately out 10:05.670 --> 10:06.560 and it was night. 10:06.740 --> 10:11.480 And so notice that Satan enters into him for the planning. 10:11.860 --> 10:14.640 Satan enters into him for the specific timeframe 10:15.190 --> 10:17.780 and then Satan also possesses him 10:17.780 --> 10:20.380 when he actually goes to do it 10:20.710 --> 10:22.560 and actually he hands him the Sop. 10:22.560 --> 10:24.200 Satan enters into him, he goes and does it. 10:24.760 --> 10:26.600 And so I think it's pretty clear 10:26.600 --> 10:30.700 that in every single step of the way Satan is involved. 10:30.940 --> 10:31.820 Does everybody see that? 10:32.220 --> 10:34.740 That's what I wanna really drive in here, okay? 10:35.220 --> 10:37.360 Now look at chapter 18, verse two. 10:37.700 --> 10:39.420 This is later on the same evening 10:39.420 --> 10:40.960 in the Garden of Gethsemane. 10:42.020 --> 10:43.980 And it says in verse two of chapter 18, 10:44.260 --> 10:47.540 Judas also which betrayed him knew the place 10:47.540 --> 10:51.600 for Jesus off times resorted thither with his disciples. 10:52.100 --> 10:54.600 Judas then having received a band of men and officers 10:54.600 --> 10:56.340 from the chief priests and Pharisees, 10:56.340 --> 11:01.700 cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons, right? 11:01.780 --> 11:05.280 So this is where the actual arrest of Jesus takes place. 11:05.620 --> 11:09.720 Now go back if you would to Matthew chapter 27, Matthew 27. 11:09.860 --> 11:11.760 So these are the facts that we've established so far. 11:12.140 --> 11:14.640 Number one, Judas is an unbeliever 11:15.000 --> 11:17.540 which opens him up to Satanic influence, 11:17.660 --> 11:20.660 especially because number two, he himself was a devil. 11:21.020 --> 11:22.900 You know, you start acting like the devil. 11:23.440 --> 11:24.160 Well, guess what? 11:24.360 --> 11:27.160 You're gonna end up being used and manipulated by the devil. 11:28.520 --> 11:29.800 And if you're unsaved, 11:29.980 --> 11:32.420 you're even liable to be demon possessed, okay? 11:32.580 --> 11:35.280 Number three, Judas' scary was possessed by Satan 11:35.280 --> 11:36.820 when he made the deal to betray Jesus. 11:37.400 --> 11:39.080 The devil's the one who put into his heart 11:39.080 --> 11:40.380 the timing of the betrayal 11:40.900 --> 11:43.180 and then Satan entered into Judas and possessed him 11:43.180 --> 11:45.220 while he carried out the actual betrayal 11:45.780 --> 11:47.320 according to the Bible. 11:47.600 --> 11:49.220 But point number six is this. 11:50.100 --> 11:53.020 Afterward, Judas regretted what he had done. 11:53.660 --> 11:55.500 He felt bad about what he had done. 11:55.960 --> 11:57.500 However, nobody cared. 11:58.080 --> 11:58.740 It was too late. 11:58.880 --> 12:00.220 Look at Matthew 27, verse one. 12:00.720 --> 12:01.680 When the morning was come, 12:02.140 --> 12:03.940 all the chief priests and elders of the people 12:03.940 --> 12:06.020 took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. 12:06.600 --> 12:08.400 And when they had bound him, they led him away 12:08.400 --> 12:10.280 and delivered him to Pontius Pilate, the governor. 12:10.660 --> 12:11.140 Watch this. 12:11.560 --> 12:14.060 Then Judas, which had betrayed him 12:14.060 --> 12:15.480 when he saw that he was condemned, 12:16.020 --> 12:18.120 repented himself and brought again 12:18.120 --> 12:20.280 the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders 12:20.280 --> 12:22.380 saying, I've sinned 12:22.380 --> 12:24.620 in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. 12:24.960 --> 12:27.640 And they said, what is that to us? 12:27.960 --> 12:28.920 See that of that. 12:29.120 --> 12:30.200 That's your problem, buddy. 12:30.560 --> 12:31.260 We don't care. 12:32.040 --> 12:35.340 And you see here that Judas is sorry. 12:35.800 --> 12:37.520 He repents for what he did. 12:38.580 --> 12:39.700 Nobody cares. 12:40.020 --> 12:40.960 It's too late. 12:41.280 --> 12:43.260 It doesn't excuse what he did. 12:43.700 --> 12:44.560 Oh, I'm sorry. 12:44.820 --> 12:45.840 Oh, well, that's okay. 12:46.180 --> 12:47.100 No, it's not okay. 12:47.100 --> 12:48.500 Nobody cares. 12:49.020 --> 12:50.940 God doesn't care that he's sorry. 12:51.700 --> 12:53.500 Christians don't care that he's sorry. 12:53.940 --> 12:55.540 The Pharisees don't care that he's sorry. 12:56.020 --> 12:57.460 Satan doesn't care that he's sorry. 12:57.900 --> 12:59.300 You made your choice. 12:59.600 --> 13:01.440 You betrayed the Lord Jesus Christ. 13:01.900 --> 13:02.920 You followed Satan. 13:03.420 --> 13:04.340 You're going to hell, buddy. 13:04.660 --> 13:05.220 It's that simple. 13:06.280 --> 13:07.100 What happens then? 13:08.160 --> 13:10.180 Well, Judas commits suicide. 13:10.400 --> 13:11.060 Look at verse five. 13:11.860 --> 13:13.660 He cast down the piece of silver in the temple. 13:13.740 --> 13:15.100 So he tries to return the money 13:15.820 --> 13:17.300 and they won't take the money. 13:17.720 --> 13:18.940 They're like, we don't want the money back. 13:19.480 --> 13:20.540 You betrayed him to us. 13:20.640 --> 13:21.360 We gave you the money. 13:21.560 --> 13:22.560 That's your problem. 13:22.800 --> 13:23.800 What is that to us? 13:23.940 --> 13:24.580 See that out of that? 13:24.760 --> 13:26.380 And he just kind of spazs out 13:26.380 --> 13:28.660 and just throws the money on the ground and runs away. 13:29.560 --> 13:31.340 And then it says that he departed 13:31.860 --> 13:34.380 and he went and he hanged himself. 13:34.760 --> 13:36.780 Now, look, again, this idea 13:37.300 --> 13:39.700 of going out and hanging yourself, 13:40.240 --> 13:43.660 this is also very typical of demonic influence. 13:43.660 --> 13:47.060 Now, look, obviously people do bad things 13:47.060 --> 13:48.540 without being influenced by Satan. 13:49.480 --> 13:50.760 And people kill themselves 13:50.760 --> 13:52.040 without being influenced by Satan. 13:52.280 --> 13:55.700 But the Bible is clear over and over again 13:56.210 --> 13:59.960 that demons will often lead people to harm themselves. 14:00.300 --> 14:03.580 This is like a hallmark of demon possession 14:04.090 --> 14:05.200 or demonic influence. 14:05.380 --> 14:08.120 Go, if you would, --> 14:16.020 But look, this is all throughout scripture. 14:16.100 --> 14:17.000 Even in the Old Testament, 14:17.640 --> 14:19.100 you have the prophets of Baal 14:19.560 --> 14:22.500 cutting themselves open with stones until they bleed. 14:23.240 --> 14:25.500 And it says that that's what their custom was. 14:25.620 --> 14:28.100 That wasn't some special activity 14:28.760 --> 14:30.700 for the face-off with Elijah 14:30.700 --> 14:32.580 at the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. 14:32.900 --> 14:34.620 No, no, no, it's just something that they do 14:34.620 --> 14:35.720 as part of their religion. 14:36.260 --> 14:36.540 Why? 14:36.700 --> 14:37.720 Because they're worshiping the devil. 14:37.880 --> 14:40.480 They're worshiping Baal, Baal's above. 14:40.480 --> 14:41.800 Is there God? 14:42.260 --> 14:43.840 And so they end up harming themselves. 14:44.080 --> 14:46.200 Look at Mark chapter five, verse two. 14:46.660 --> 14:48.640 When he was come out of the ship, Jesus, that is, 14:48.920 --> 14:51.020 immediately they're met him out of the tombs, 14:51.180 --> 14:53.620 a man with an unclean spirit, right? 14:53.720 --> 14:54.760 So this guy's demon possessed. 14:55.380 --> 14:56.100 Look at verse five. 14:56.660 --> 14:58.260 And always night and day, 14:58.420 --> 15:00.320 he was in the mountains and in the tombs, 15:00.320 --> 15:01.820 crying and doing what? 15:02.460 --> 15:04.980 Cutting himself with stones. 15:05.240 --> 15:06.880 So again, you see the self-harm 15:06.880 --> 15:08.180 and cutting himself. 15:08.180 --> 15:09.660 Go to chapter nine, 15:10.100 --> 15:11.100 and we're gonna look at another example. 15:11.420 --> 15:13.660 And look, if you're interested in the subject 15:13.660 --> 15:14.960 of people being demon possessed, 15:15.500 --> 15:17.520 the book of the Bible that hammers this more 15:17.520 --> 15:19.100 than any other is the Gospel of Mark. 15:20.000 --> 15:21.160 In the Gospel of Mark, 15:21.360 --> 15:24.000 somebody's demon possessed in like almost every chapter. 15:24.800 --> 15:27.020 Okay, so obviously this is something 15:27.020 --> 15:28.460 that comes up throughout the four gospels. 15:28.840 --> 15:32.280 But I mean, the Gospel of Mark is big on this subject. 15:32.660 --> 15:34.960 So, you know, if you ever wanna do the deep dive, 15:35.120 --> 15:36.340 just read the Gospel of Mark 15:36.340 --> 15:38.480 and you'll get all kinds of stories on this, 15:38.640 --> 15:40.060 all kinds of information about this. 15:40.340 --> 15:41.800 Look at chapter nine, verse 17. 15:42.080 --> 15:43.640 One of the multitude answered and said, 15:43.780 --> 15:46.300 Master, I brought unto thee my son, 15:46.660 --> 15:48.420 which hath a dumb spirit. 15:48.820 --> 15:50.840 Now, what does this mean, a dumb spirit? 15:51.280 --> 15:52.940 This is the literal meaning of dumb, 15:53.060 --> 15:55.600 which means that you are unable to speak. 15:55.760 --> 15:57.660 So because he is possessed by a demon, 15:58.200 --> 16:01.100 his faculty of speech has been taken away. 16:01.200 --> 16:02.240 He can no longer talk. 16:03.620 --> 16:05.560 And again, if you read the Gospel of Mark, 16:05.560 --> 16:08.240 you'll see that a lot of times 16:08.240 --> 16:09.840 there'll be physical manifestations 16:09.840 --> 16:11.240 to people being demon possessed. 16:11.620 --> 16:14.080 And again, we don't wanna make the mistake of thinking that, 16:14.320 --> 16:17.620 oh, every deaf person, every dumb person, 16:18.000 --> 16:20.540 every person who has a seizure is demon possessed 16:20.540 --> 16:21.620 or something because obviously, 16:22.020 --> 16:24.420 there are also physiological things 16:24.420 --> 16:26.020 that can cause these things, right? 16:26.520 --> 16:30.840 But they also are sometimes caused by demons, okay? 16:31.160 --> 16:32.880 And the Bible records both types. 16:33.040 --> 16:35.120 The Bible records totally innocent people, 16:35.120 --> 16:36.420 struggling with these things. 16:36.620 --> 16:38.360 And then the Bible also records people 16:38.360 --> 16:41.820 having these problems because they are demon possessed, okay? 16:42.360 --> 16:45.020 And so we wanna make sure that we make that distinction. 16:46.040 --> 16:48.380 Also when it comes to being mentally ill, 16:48.820 --> 16:52.340 not everybody who's crazy is demon possessed, right? 16:52.480 --> 16:54.620 Because there are chemical imbalances. 16:54.940 --> 16:57.780 And look, I've known good Christian people 16:57.780 --> 17:01.380 who have had nervous breakdowns and gone crazy and stuff. 17:01.720 --> 17:03.880 You know, I've personally known two separate people 17:03.880 --> 17:05.460 and these are people that I knew pretty well, 17:06.240 --> 17:09.240 both of whom when they got their amalgam fillings removed 17:09.240 --> 17:13.400 because the amalgam fillings contain toxic heavy metals, 17:13.680 --> 17:16.160 mercury, whatever, the amalgam fillings. 17:16.220 --> 17:18.000 When they got their amalgam fillings removed, 17:18.160 --> 17:20.260 they got them removed improperly 17:20.260 --> 17:23.620 because it's very difficult to safely remove 17:23.620 --> 17:25.820 the amalgam fillings without releasing 17:25.820 --> 17:27.080 these toxins into your body. 17:27.380 --> 17:31.100 I've known two different people in my firsthand experience 17:31.100 --> 17:33.960 where they got their amalgam fillings removed 17:33.960 --> 17:37.580 and just went completely crazy for like a week or two. 17:38.180 --> 17:39.940 So like a temporary insanity, 17:40.120 --> 17:43.280 like before and after this person was totally normal, 17:43.840 --> 17:46.560 both people, but during that period 17:46.560 --> 17:49.680 while they were being hit with this heavy metal toxicity, 17:50.080 --> 17:52.580 they went totally nuts. 17:52.860 --> 17:54.740 And I mean, I don't know if you've been around somebody 17:54.740 --> 17:57.520 who is totally crazy, who's ever, 17:57.860 --> 18:00.160 who would ever say I've been in the presence of someone 18:00.160 --> 18:02.880 who was totally crazy, having nervous breakdown. 18:03.700 --> 18:05.680 And when it's someone that you've known previously, 18:06.060 --> 18:08.040 it's very weird, it's very surreal 18:08.460 --> 18:10.240 because it's like, you know this person 18:10.780 --> 18:12.200 and they're just completely crazy 18:12.660 --> 18:14.900 and just saying all these wild things. 18:15.180 --> 18:17.860 And we're gonna talk more about craziness later 18:17.860 --> 18:18.420 in the sermon. 18:19.100 --> 18:21.760 But for now, I just wanna explain to you 18:21.760 --> 18:24.560 that obviously there are such things 18:24.560 --> 18:27.340 as physiological causes, why someone can't talk, 18:27.720 --> 18:30.500 why someone's deaf, why someone goes crazy. 18:30.800 --> 18:32.580 So we don't wanna just automatically 18:33.480 --> 18:35.320 say everything's the devil or something. 18:35.620 --> 18:38.320 But it's also impossible to ignore the fact 18:38.320 --> 18:41.020 that a lot of people who are flopping around 18:41.020 --> 18:42.320 and foaming at the mouth 18:42.320 --> 18:45.580 and having these type of issues and going crazy, 18:45.920 --> 18:46.920 they are demon possessed. 18:48.120 --> 18:49.580 And it's like, do you really think 18:49.580 --> 18:51.760 that demon possession just doesn't exist anymore 18:52.180 --> 18:54.580 and that it just only existed at the time of Christ 18:54.580 --> 18:55.700 and that now it's just over? 18:56.300 --> 18:59.860 Because even after Christ was buried and rose again 18:59.860 --> 19:02.100 and ascended up to heaven, in the book of Acts, 19:02.200 --> 19:04.620 there's still people that are demon possessed. 19:05.360 --> 19:08.040 And there are hundreds of millions of demons 19:08.040 --> 19:09.880 because there are hundreds of millions of angels 19:09.880 --> 19:10.600 according to the Bible. 19:10.960 --> 19:13.440 And Satan took one third of the angels with him 19:13.440 --> 19:14.080 that rebelled. 19:14.340 --> 19:15.800 And so there are all kinds of demons 19:15.800 --> 19:17.340 and unclean spirits in this world. 19:17.720 --> 19:19.540 Demon possession's real, if you don't believe it, 19:19.760 --> 19:20.880 just, I don't know, spend a little time 19:20.880 --> 19:22.280 in our parking lot throughout the week 19:22.280 --> 19:25.180 and you'll probably see some examples of it. 19:25.180 --> 19:28.140 It's like those tornado hunters or something. 19:28.640 --> 19:32.260 They go to certain places, Kansas or Oklahoma or something. 19:32.500 --> 19:34.540 You don't have to go far demon hunters. 19:35.800 --> 19:39.520 Just within a couple miles of this place, you'll find it. 19:39.800 --> 19:41.060 It won't be difficult. 19:42.240 --> 19:44.800 So anyway, I don't wanna get too off track with that. 19:45.240 --> 19:47.600 But it says here that he has a dumb spirit, 19:48.080 --> 19:50.360 verse 18, where so ever he taketh him, 19:50.920 --> 19:54.340 he teareth him and he fometh, right? 19:54.340 --> 19:56.000 So he's like foaming at the mouth 19:57.040 --> 19:58.580 and gnasheth with his teeth. 19:58.740 --> 20:01.380 So he's grinding his teeth, foaming at the mouth, 20:01.960 --> 20:03.880 pining away, right? 20:03.980 --> 20:07.560 And pining away is usually associated in the Bible 20:07.560 --> 20:09.920 with someone like starving to death or something. 20:10.100 --> 20:11.060 They pine away. 20:11.800 --> 20:13.680 Basically just like, you know, just, 20:13.860 --> 20:16.720 I don't know, just being worn out as it were, okay? 20:17.360 --> 20:20.080 And then it says, I spake to thy disciples 20:20.080 --> 20:22.120 that they should cast them out and they could not. 20:22.710 --> 20:24.480 Look at verse 22, we get a little more detail. 20:25.040 --> 20:27.460 And off times it, the spirit, 20:27.980 --> 20:30.220 not only does it tear him and make him foam 20:30.220 --> 20:31.220 and wear him out physically, 20:31.800 --> 20:33.840 but off times it has cast him into the fire. 20:34.200 --> 20:35.640 So how many times did it throw him into the fire? 20:35.700 --> 20:36.320 A bunch of times. 20:36.700 --> 20:38.180 So this kid, because he's demon possessed, 20:38.440 --> 20:42.060 is throwing himself into the fire, okay? 20:42.160 --> 20:42.960 That's not normal. 20:43.580 --> 20:46.340 Every human impulse is to protect yourself 20:46.340 --> 20:50.040 not to throw yourself into a fire, okay? 20:50.040 --> 20:52.040 Imagine you're out in the woods, 20:52.560 --> 20:53.900 you're out in the desert, you're camping, 20:54.300 --> 20:56.340 you got a big campfire going, right? 20:56.680 --> 20:58.460 And then somebody runs and just throws themselves 20:58.460 --> 21:01.220 into the fire, just lays down in the fire. 21:01.460 --> 21:02.960 I mean, that would freak you out. 21:03.280 --> 21:06.340 That is weird, that's crazy, that's not normal. 21:06.900 --> 21:07.920 Nobody does that. 21:09.820 --> 21:14.560 And it says also into the waters to destroy him. 21:14.800 --> 21:15.980 And the to destroy him means 21:15.980 --> 21:17.800 that the intention is suicide. 21:17.800 --> 21:21.200 So this is jumping into the fire to kill oneself, 21:21.440 --> 21:24.120 jumping into the waters to kill oneself. 21:24.280 --> 21:25.920 The goal is to destroy him. 21:26.240 --> 21:28.820 The demon inside this kid is trying to get him 21:28.820 --> 21:30.320 to kill himself, okay? 21:31.040 --> 21:32.080 That's what the Bible says. 21:32.560 --> 21:33.820 But if thou canst do anything, 21:34.060 --> 21:36.020 have compassion on us and help us. 21:36.140 --> 21:39.400 So again, Judas, it's no wonder 21:39.400 --> 21:42.440 that if he was unsaved, he was a devil, 21:42.780 --> 21:44.880 and he's just being influenced by Satan 21:44.880 --> 21:46.200 in every step of the process, 21:46.200 --> 21:48.300 then afterward he feels bad about it. 21:48.320 --> 21:50.040 He's sorry, he repented himself. 21:50.440 --> 21:51.760 And then what does he do? 21:52.060 --> 21:54.000 He goes out and kills himself. 21:54.480 --> 21:56.380 Now the Bible doesn't explicitly say 21:56.380 --> 21:58.540 that the devil has anything to do with him 21:58.540 --> 21:59.060 killing himself. 21:59.260 --> 22:00.940 But again, it's consistent with someone 22:00.940 --> 22:03.460 who's under the devil's influence to harm themselves. 22:03.980 --> 22:06.080 And that's what he does, he goes out and kills himself. 22:06.580 --> 22:08.140 Okay, go to Acts chapter one. 22:08.340 --> 22:09.420 Acts chapter one, because I'm just, 22:09.660 --> 22:11.120 I'm trying to blow through the story, 22:11.140 --> 22:12.980 but I wanna get all the facts to you. 22:13.200 --> 22:14.580 And then I'm gonna make application 22:14.580 --> 22:16.280 with what's going on in the news right now 22:16.980 --> 22:18.740 with the whole Lindsey Clancy thing. 22:19.660 --> 22:21.660 Because of course, this is another parallel 22:21.660 --> 22:23.600 with Lindsey Clancy, because guess what? 22:23.920 --> 22:25.820 After she murdered her children, 22:26.400 --> 22:30.080 she slit her wrists, slit her own throat, 22:30.440 --> 22:31.760 and then jumped out the window, 22:32.500 --> 22:34.720 which is again consistent, people in the Bible 22:34.720 --> 22:37.240 that are demon possessed are cutting themselves 22:37.900 --> 22:39.740 and throwing themselves in the fire, 22:40.020 --> 22:41.300 throwing themselves in the water, 22:41.560 --> 22:43.280 throwing themselves out the window. 22:43.700 --> 22:47.200 And so it's like, I heard a voice that told me, 22:47.840 --> 22:50.500 go kill these children and then go kill yourself. 22:50.880 --> 22:52.620 And then she's cutting herself and throwing herself. 22:52.840 --> 22:58.200 I mean, look, it looks to me a lot like demonic influence. 22:58.760 --> 23:00.220 You know, that she's demon possessed. 23:00.880 --> 23:02.400 That's what the evidence would point toward. 23:02.740 --> 23:03.600 But here's the question, 23:03.960 --> 23:05.760 does that mean that Judas is off the hook? 23:06.020 --> 23:08.400 It wasn't Judas' fault, because the devil made him do it. 23:09.160 --> 23:10.520 Well, let's see what the Bible says. 23:10.520 --> 23:12.020 Acts chapter one, verse 16, 23:12.180 --> 23:14.340 men and brethren, this scripture must needs 23:14.340 --> 23:15.820 have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost 23:15.820 --> 23:19.440 by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, 23:19.960 --> 23:21.700 which was guide to them that took Jesus. 23:22.500 --> 23:23.420 Look at verse 18. 23:23.600 --> 23:27.220 Now this man purchased a field with the what? 23:28.480 --> 23:30.180 Reward of iniquity. 23:31.080 --> 23:34.720 And falling headlong, he burst a sunder in the midst 23:34.720 --> 23:36.920 and all his bowels gushed out. 23:37.080 --> 23:38.400 And so what's interesting here 23:38.400 --> 23:42.080 is that he purchases a field with the reward of iniquity. 23:42.160 --> 23:45.320 Cause remember the reward was they paid him, right? 23:45.780 --> 23:48.860 In order to betray Jesus, that was the reward of his iniquity. 23:49.380 --> 23:51.420 And then he throws the money on the ground, 23:51.660 --> 23:54.620 but then they end up taking that money 23:55.080 --> 23:56.880 and buying a cemetery with it. 23:57.520 --> 24:01.080 So what did Judas actually is purchasing 24:01.080 --> 24:02.380 with the reward of his iniquity? 24:02.540 --> 24:05.240 Here's the reward you get, you gon' die. 24:06.030 --> 24:09.440 So this is basically a poetic justice 24:09.950 --> 24:12.160 that the money that he received, 24:12.240 --> 24:13.700 the wages of his sin is death. 24:14.040 --> 24:17.240 Because the money that he gets for doing the crime 24:17.240 --> 24:20.020 is spent on a place of death 24:20.020 --> 24:23.260 so that he is going to die. 24:25.890 --> 24:28.860 And it says here that he perched a field 24:28.860 --> 24:29.920 with the reward of iniquity 24:30.750 --> 24:33.880 and falling headlong, which means head first, 24:34.700 --> 24:37.360 falling head first, he burst a thunder in the midst 24:37.900 --> 24:39.740 and all his bowels gushed out. 24:40.020 --> 24:42.460 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem 24:42.460 --> 24:45.300 and so much as that field is called in their proper tongue, 24:45.640 --> 24:49.120 a seldom, that is to say, the field of blood. 24:49.760 --> 24:52.380 So basically Matthew tells us he hung himself. 24:52.880 --> 24:54.840 Here it says he fell headlong 24:54.840 --> 24:56.020 and burst a thunder in the midst. 24:56.440 --> 24:58.720 So probably what happened is he hung himself 24:58.720 --> 25:03.040 and then eventually over time the rope breaks over time. 25:03.040 --> 25:05.660 Eventually, and his body comes crashing down, 25:06.080 --> 25:08.780 bursts open and all his bowels gush out 25:08.780 --> 25:11.600 and it's a gross, ugly mess. 25:12.580 --> 25:14.840 Verse 20, for it is written in the book of Psalms, 25:15.360 --> 25:17.080 let his habitation be desolate 25:17.590 --> 25:19.200 and let no man dwell therein 25:19.200 --> 25:22.600 and his bishopric let another take. 25:22.940 --> 25:25.180 So what I wanna point out again is verse 20. 25:26.160 --> 25:28.240 So first of all, he received the reward 25:28.240 --> 25:29.880 of his iniquity, death, 25:30.560 --> 25:33.460 meaning that he's guilty, he did wrong 25:33.460 --> 25:34.600 and he's getting punishment. 25:34.880 --> 25:38.740 Because another way of saying the wages of sin is death 25:38.740 --> 25:41.000 is that the reward of sin is death 25:41.000 --> 25:43.060 or the punishment for sin is death. 25:43.360 --> 25:44.540 That's what that means. 25:45.460 --> 25:49.460 But not only that, the book of Psalms is cursing him 25:49.460 --> 25:52.100 for what he did and holding him accountable 25:52.100 --> 25:53.600 and holding him responsible 25:54.180 --> 25:57.100 and asking for condemnation upon him for what he did. 25:57.520 --> 25:59.240 Now go through it to Psalm 109. 25:59.240 --> 26:01.220 We're not gonna go to both places for sake of time, 26:01.340 --> 26:03.160 but we could look at Psalm 69 26:03.720 --> 26:05.400 and we could look at Psalm 109 26:05.400 --> 26:07.880 because Acts chapter one just quoted 26:08.400 --> 26:11.800 from both Psalm 69 and Psalm 109 about Judas. 26:12.340 --> 26:14.500 And so let's just look at the highlight here. 26:14.700 --> 26:16.620 Psalm 109, verse six, 26:17.000 --> 26:18.720 set thou a wicked man over him. 26:18.760 --> 26:20.000 This is about Judas Iscariot 26:20.600 --> 26:23.720 and let Satan stand at his right hand. 26:23.860 --> 26:25.480 Well, that's exactly what happened. 26:25.640 --> 26:27.480 That's what we saw in the story, right? 26:27.480 --> 26:29.240 Which again, supports the fact 26:29.240 --> 26:31.600 that Satan was also leading him to kill himself. 26:33.080 --> 26:35.540 When he shall be judged, watch this, 26:36.600 --> 26:40.240 let him be acquitted, not guilty. 26:41.400 --> 26:44.420 He was temporarily made insane by Satan. 26:44.720 --> 26:45.320 He was crazy. 26:45.500 --> 26:46.620 He didn't know what he was doing. 26:46.980 --> 26:48.320 He regretted it afterward 26:48.320 --> 26:50.780 because he wasn't in the driver's seat when he did it. 26:50.900 --> 26:51.940 No, no, is that what the Bible says? 26:52.080 --> 26:53.300 No, the Bible says, 26:53.300 --> 26:56.260 when he shall be judged, let him be condemned. 26:57.280 --> 26:59.200 Let his prayer become sin. 26:59.740 --> 27:01.360 Let his days be few 27:01.360 --> 27:03.880 and let another take his office. 27:03.960 --> 27:05.020 This is what's quoted in Acts one, 27:05.140 --> 27:08.220 his bishopric, his office, let another take. 27:09.800 --> 27:11.640 Now, go if you would to James chapter one. 27:13.240 --> 27:14.580 The next point I wanna make is this. 27:14.780 --> 27:17.620 Many people commit horrible crimes 27:18.140 --> 27:19.960 without Satan being involved, right? 27:19.960 --> 27:23.920 I mean, Satan doesn't necessarily have to be involved 27:23.920 --> 27:25.540 for people to do horrible things. 27:25.660 --> 27:28.300 In fact, most of the horrible things that people do, 27:28.440 --> 27:29.600 they dream up on their own 27:29.600 --> 27:31.480 with no help from the devil at all. 27:31.760 --> 27:34.740 Because unfortunately, humans are very sinful by nature. 27:35.200 --> 27:36.240 It says in verse 13, 27:36.380 --> 27:37.900 let no man say when he's tempted, 27:38.820 --> 27:40.700 I'm tempted of God, James 1, 13. 27:41.080 --> 27:42.920 For God cannot be tempted with evil, 27:43.260 --> 27:44.700 neither tempted he any man, 27:45.100 --> 27:46.560 but every man is tempted 27:47.060 --> 27:49.600 when he's drawn away of his own lust and enticed, 27:49.840 --> 27:52.120 then when lust has conceived to bring it forth sin 27:52.120 --> 27:54.500 and sin when it has finished bringing forth death. 27:54.860 --> 27:56.220 So when the book of James here 27:56.220 --> 27:58.340 is just kind of speaking in generalities, 27:59.740 --> 28:02.260 he says, hey, don't blame God when you're tempted. 28:03.280 --> 28:04.780 You know, God cannot be tempted with evil 28:04.780 --> 28:05.840 and neither tempted the any man, 28:06.240 --> 28:08.200 but every man is tempted by the devil. 28:08.400 --> 28:09.060 Is that what it says? 28:09.660 --> 28:13.640 No, it seems that the main or primary tempter 28:13.640 --> 28:15.040 is your own lust, 28:15.480 --> 28:16.520 your own sinful heart. 28:16.640 --> 28:19.800 Now look, is the devil also a major tempter? 28:19.900 --> 28:20.280 Absolutely. 28:21.120 --> 28:24.020 The devil also is out to devour you 28:24.020 --> 28:25.700 and he wants to tempt you 28:25.700 --> 28:27.260 and he wants to deceive you. 28:27.400 --> 28:28.320 I get that, but you know what? 28:28.580 --> 28:32.500 The heart is also deceitful above all things 28:32.500 --> 28:34.320 and desperately wicked who can know it. 28:34.380 --> 28:37.900 So not everything can be blamed on the devil 28:37.900 --> 28:40.740 because a lot of people just dream up wickedness 28:40.740 --> 28:41.640 out of their own heart. 28:42.100 --> 28:44.120 And it's really most of the time 28:44.120 --> 28:46.660 not the devil leading us into sin 28:46.660 --> 28:49.260 as much as just our own wickedness, 28:49.460 --> 28:51.800 our own sinful nature, our own stupidity. 28:52.260 --> 28:55.260 And obviously that is the bigger problem 28:55.260 --> 28:57.380 which is why it's the primary
