00:09.240 this rhetorical question is asked in verse number 10. 00:09.680 --> 00:11.880 Who can find a virtuous woman 00:11.880 --> 00:14.460 for her price is far above rubies? 00:14.500 --> 00:17.600 Meaning that a virtuous woman is difficult to find. 00:17.720 --> 00:19.000 It's like, man, who can find one? 00:19.560 --> 00:21.920 And so if you find one, it's a rare treasure 00:22.500 --> 00:24.480 worth more than rubies, okay? 00:24.900 --> 00:26.440 Now, the first thing I wanna start out 00:26.440 --> 00:28.540 showing you here in verse number one 00:29.040 --> 00:31.000 is that this advice is being given 00:31.000 --> 00:32.980 from a mother to her son. 00:33.100 --> 00:34.060 It says in verse number one, 00:34.200 --> 00:35.340 the words of King Lemuel, 00:35.900 --> 00:38.940 the prophecy that his mother taught him. 00:39.320 --> 00:41.060 Now, most of the book of Proverbs 00:41.060 --> 00:44.540 is a father giving advice to his son. 00:44.680 --> 00:46.820 Obviously, if we read the Bible cover to cover, 00:47.200 --> 00:50.200 there's an emphasis on the male perspective, of course. 00:50.580 --> 00:52.220 And so a lot of times we have to kind of, you know, 00:52.340 --> 00:53.620 apply things the other way. 00:53.900 --> 00:55.840 But in general, the Bible is being written 00:55.840 --> 00:58.380 from and to a male perspective. 00:58.860 --> 01:00.380 But in the book of Proverbs, 01:00.540 --> 01:02.460 even though the vast majority of the book 01:02.460 --> 01:05.700 is a father talking to his son, you know, 01:05.760 --> 01:09.000 the Bible does include here some advice from the mother. 01:09.420 --> 01:11.280 But keep your finger here and go to chapter one, 01:11.320 --> 01:14.040 because all throughout the entire book of Proverbs though, 01:14.180 --> 01:18.900 there's a constant admonition to listen to your mother, 01:19.060 --> 01:20.460 not to just listen to your dad, 01:20.820 --> 01:22.500 not to just listen to your father's teachings, 01:22.500 --> 01:25.660 but to listen to your mother. 01:25.900 --> 01:26.780 And what does the Bible say? 01:27.160 --> 01:28.940 Honor your father and mother. 01:29.640 --> 01:32.940 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 01:33.120 --> 01:37.000 So we don't wanna downplay mom as an authority figure, 01:37.340 --> 01:39.160 just like dad is an authority figure 01:39.160 --> 01:40.380 for children that are growing up. 01:40.560 --> 01:42.460 Because look at chapter one, verse eight. 01:42.600 --> 01:46.580 It says, my son, hear the instruction of thy father 01:47.680 --> 01:50.800 and forsake not the law of thy mother. 01:50.800 --> 01:53.380 And this is right at the very beginning of Proverbs, 01:53.540 --> 01:55.360 kind of giving you the introductory statements 01:55.750 --> 01:58.660 to help you understand, look, yes, listen to your father, 01:58.760 --> 02:00.380 but listen to your mother as well. 02:00.480 --> 02:02.680 You need to listen to both parents, okay? 02:03.100 --> 02:05.520 And so then in chapter 31, if you turn back there, 02:05.820 --> 02:08.680 we actually have a special chapter here 02:08.680 --> 02:11.900 that is a mother teaching her son. 02:12.540 --> 02:13.620 And so here's the thing, 02:13.720 --> 02:17.100 obviously a mother is gonna teach her son things 02:17.100 --> 02:19.920 that are more pretending to domestic life 02:19.920 --> 02:22.320 because that's what is more of interest to her. 02:22.500 --> 02:24.200 If you think about a lot of the book of Proverbs 02:24.200 --> 02:26.280 is talking about how you're gonna do business, 02:26.520 --> 02:28.720 how you're gonna live your life and work your job 02:28.720 --> 02:31.520 and not be lazy, et cetera, et cetera. 02:31.940 --> 02:33.180 And yeah, there are a lot of warnings 02:33.180 --> 02:34.680 to stay away from the strange woman. 02:35.020 --> 02:36.240 But of course, mom's advice 02:36.240 --> 02:38.660 is really gonna home in on domestic matters. 02:38.960 --> 02:40.460 And so the big thing for her 02:40.460 --> 02:43.380 is finding the right wife, right? 02:43.500 --> 02:46.040 And this is something that we all worry about 02:46.040 --> 02:48.100 for our children is that we want them 02:48.100 --> 02:50.480 to marry a godly person. 02:50.640 --> 02:51.800 We want them to marry well. 02:52.120 --> 02:53.060 Because let's face it, 02:53.300 --> 02:56.260 marriage is probably the number one 02:56.260 --> 02:58.560 most important decision that you make in your life 02:58.560 --> 03:00.540 other than getting saved, right? 03:00.700 --> 03:02.200 Getting saved is the most important. 03:02.920 --> 03:05.220 I mean, getting married is probably the second most important 03:05.220 --> 03:07.280 as far as just the permanence of it 03:07.280 --> 03:10.300 and just how much of a dramatic impact 03:10.300 --> 03:11.620 it's gonna have on your life. 03:11.840 --> 03:12.700 So this is a situation 03:12.700 --> 03:15.600 where you don't wanna screw up this decision, right? 03:15.600 --> 03:18.620 And so it's important that you as a young man 03:18.620 --> 03:20.360 marry a virtuous woman. 03:20.520 --> 03:22.040 You wanna try to find that virtuous woman 03:22.560 --> 03:24.620 because it's gonna have a huge impact on your life. 03:25.180 --> 03:27.800 So this is the prophecy that his mother taught him. 03:27.840 --> 03:29.440 Now, before we get into the virtuous woman 03:29.440 --> 03:30.260 part of the story, 03:30.640 --> 03:32.700 let's just get some of this little preamble here. 03:32.800 --> 03:33.660 It says in verse two, 03:33.980 --> 03:36.420 what my son and what the son of my womb 03:36.420 --> 03:38.020 and what the son of my vows 03:38.020 --> 03:41.040 give not thy strength unto women 03:41.720 --> 03:45.520 nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. 03:45.860 --> 03:47.720 It is not for kings, O Lemuel. 03:48.120 --> 03:49.700 It is not for kings to drink wine 03:49.700 --> 03:51.740 nor for princes, strong drink. 03:52.000 --> 03:54.380 And so the first thing that she says 03:54.780 --> 03:58.080 are gonna be just the big pitfalls for a young man, 03:58.540 --> 03:59.800 a young Christian man, 04:00.140 --> 04:01.760 a young man who wants to live for God. 04:02.000 --> 04:04.480 It's gonna be women and alcohol, right? 04:04.600 --> 04:06.180 These are gonna be the two big temptations 04:06.180 --> 04:09.620 for the young teenage boy or young adult man, 04:09.620 --> 04:10.720 women and alcohol. 04:11.000 --> 04:11.700 And here's what's funny. 04:12.080 --> 04:15.200 Some people will literally go to an establishment 04:15.620 --> 04:16.940 that is selling alcohol 04:17.420 --> 04:19.700 in order to try to find their future life's mate. 04:20.720 --> 04:23.100 Hey, let's go meet our wife at a bar. 04:23.480 --> 04:24.980 Let's go meet at the club. 04:25.260 --> 04:26.320 I mean, it's so stupid 04:26.320 --> 04:28.540 because the Bible's telling you right now, 04:28.880 --> 04:32.300 avoid alcohol and avoid the strange woman 04:32.300 --> 04:33.280 because guess what? 04:33.380 --> 04:34.900 They're probably both gonna be at the same place. 04:36.040 --> 04:37.480 I mean, do you really think 04:37.480 --> 04:41.120 that godly young ladies are hanging out at a bar? 04:41.460 --> 04:43.620 Is that really the place to go find 04:43.620 --> 04:47.160 a virtuous, hardworking, godly Christian woman? 04:47.340 --> 04:48.380 Absolutely not. 04:48.800 --> 04:51.400 And so you need to stay away from those establishments 04:51.400 --> 04:53.760 if you're a young lady, if you're a young man, 04:54.100 --> 04:57.420 stay out of the bars, the clubs, the casinos, 04:57.700 --> 04:58.440 the nightclubs. 04:58.720 --> 05:01.600 Those are ungodly wicked places. 05:01.600 --> 05:02.700 And what are you gonna do there? 05:02.900 --> 05:05.720 You're just gonna run into other ungodly wicked people 05:05.720 --> 05:08.200 and then your problems are just gonna be multiplied 05:08.200 --> 05:09.100 and compounded. 05:09.540 --> 05:10.740 Don't go to those places. 05:11.480 --> 05:13.680 She says, give not thy strength unto women, 05:14.280 --> 05:16.800 nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. 05:17.080 --> 05:19.040 You see, it doesn't make you a big, strong, 05:19.120 --> 05:21.980 powerful, mighty man to go out and be a womanizer. pregnant is what it's gonna do, 05:45.300 --> 05:47.240 because it's literally called a beer belly 05:47.240 --> 05:48.740 when men look pregnant. 05:48.880 --> 05:50.480 I remember my dad saying to a man 05:50.480 --> 05:52.120 who drank a lot of beer and had a beer belly, 05:52.240 --> 05:53.560 he said, hey, when's the baby due? 05:55.300 --> 05:57.340 Probably wasn't a very nice thing for him to say, 05:57.420 --> 05:58.540 but hey, that's what he said. 05:59.280 --> 06:00.240 When's the baby due? 06:03.180 --> 06:05.520 But if it's funny, you don't see that on the commercial. 06:05.640 --> 06:08.620 On the commercial, it's the six-pack abs, okay? 06:09.500 --> 06:10.320 Well, you know what? 06:10.660 --> 06:12.320 Giving your strength to booze, 06:12.520 --> 06:13.860 giving your strength to women, 06:14.180 --> 06:15.960 this is what the fool does, okay? 06:17.240 --> 06:20.080 She says, it's not for kings olemuel, 06:20.480 --> 06:22.120 it's not for kings to drink wine 06:22.120 --> 06:23.600 nor for princes strong drink. 06:24.140 --> 06:25.680 Now here's the thing, the Bible tells us 06:25.680 --> 06:30.220 that as Christians, God has made us kings and priests 06:30.220 --> 06:31.640 unto God and his father. 06:31.640 --> 06:36.000 We are a royal priesthood and we are a nation of kings 06:36.000 --> 06:38.660 and so God looks at us spiritually 06:38.660 --> 06:40.260 as having the importance of kings 06:40.740 --> 06:43.040 and then the Bible says not for kings to drink wine 06:43.040 --> 06:44.860 nor for princes strong drink, 06:45.000 --> 06:47.080 lest they drink and forget the law 06:47.080 --> 06:50.120 and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. 06:50.420 --> 06:54.420 She's saying, look, as a king, you're passing judgment. 06:54.600 --> 06:55.780 A king is a ruler, right? 06:56.160 --> 06:58.140 And so the reason that he should not be one 06:58.140 --> 07:00.300 that's given to wine is because then 07:00.300 --> 07:02.480 he's gonna be having clouded judgment 07:02.480 --> 07:04.260 when he's deciding right and wrong 07:04.820 --> 07:07.040 and people are gonna come to him and they need help 07:07.040 --> 07:08.500 and he doesn't know what's right, 07:08.620 --> 07:09.980 he doesn't know what the right advice is 07:09.980 --> 07:13.320 because his mind is addled with booze, okay? 07:13.660 --> 07:15.420 So the Bible says here, he'll drink, 07:15.780 --> 07:16.780 he'll forget the law 07:16.780 --> 07:19.360 and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. 07:19.440 --> 07:21.160 So the one who's afflicted comes to him and says, 07:21.220 --> 07:23.280 hey man, I need help, help me out. 07:23.380 --> 07:24.600 He's like, oh, I don't know, man. 07:25.760 --> 07:28.600 Because they're drunk or they've just killed 07:28.600 --> 07:30.360 too many brain cells with drugs and alcohol. 07:31.580 --> 07:33.740 It says in verse six, give strong drink unto him 07:33.740 --> 07:36.020 that's ready to perish and wine unto those 07:36.020 --> 07:38.920 that be of heavy hearts, let him drink and forget his poverty 07:38.920 --> 07:40.880 and remember his misery no more. 07:40.960 --> 07:42.700 Here's another way of saying that in the modern vernacular. 07:43.060 --> 07:46.500 Hey, drinking's for losers, losers, failures, 07:47.080 --> 07:48.900 people that are about to crash and burn, 07:49.320 --> 07:50.820 people that are about to just destroy 07:50.820 --> 07:51.740 and ruin their lives. 07:52.000 --> 07:54.320 Yeah, just let them drink and forget their poverty 07:54.320 --> 07:56.060 and remember their misery no more. 07:56.260 --> 07:57.400 And I've actually heard Christians 07:57.400 --> 07:59.440 take this scripture and say, hey, look, 07:59.580 --> 08:01.720 the Bible's telling me it's okay to drink when I'm sad. 08:02.440 --> 08:03.640 You're missing the whole point, folks. 08:03.740 --> 08:04.740 This is sarcastic. 08:05.680 --> 08:07.160 This is sarcasm. 08:07.560 --> 08:09.040 This is like, like if I literally said, 08:09.200 --> 08:10.280 hey, drinking's for losers, 08:10.680 --> 08:12.020 and you're like, hey, I know a guy who's a loser, 08:12.140 --> 08:13.120 I'm gonna go buy him alcohol. 08:13.460 --> 08:15.840 Like that's the level of stupidity 08:15.840 --> 08:18.040 it would be to interpret the scripture that way. 08:18.880 --> 08:20.080 Ah, drinking's righteously, 09:38.080 --> 09:39.820 and plead the cause of the poor needy. 09:40.120 --> 09:42.960 She's saying, look son, you as a king, 09:43.280 --> 09:46.320 your job is to be a blessing to other people, 09:46.660 --> 09:50.060 to look out for other people, to help other people 09:50.060 --> 09:51.220 and to help the helpless, 09:51.780 --> 09:53.660 to help those who cannot help themselves, 09:53.840 --> 09:55.600 to open your mouth for the dumb, right? 09:55.680 --> 09:57.100 What does it mean to be dumb, means you can't speak. 09:57.700 --> 09:59.520 You're gonna be the mouth for the dumb. 09:59.620 --> 10:00.940 You're gonna be the ears for the deaf. 10:01.040 --> 10:02.460 You're gonna be the eyes for the blind. 10:02.800 --> 10:05.100 You're gonna be helping other people. 10:05.260 --> 10:07.600 You're supposed to be an instructor of the foolish, 10:08.000 --> 10:09.620 a teacher of babes, right? 10:09.720 --> 10:11.420 You're supposed to be leading the blind, 10:12.220 --> 10:13.740 not being like unto them. 10:14.580 --> 10:16.620 And so, all that is like a preamble 10:16.620 --> 10:18.540 for this virtuous woman section. 10:18.840 --> 10:20.680 And I think that the way that it ties in 10:20.680 --> 10:23.040 is that guess what, in order to find a good wife, 10:23.300 --> 10:25.000 how about you start by being a good guy? 10:25.860 --> 10:28.980 I would say step one to finding a good woman 10:28.980 --> 10:30.200 is being a good guy. 10:30.860 --> 10:32.260 And so here's the thing about that. 10:32.520 --> 10:33.740 What does it mean to be a good guy? 10:34.040 --> 10:35.780 Well, you're abstaining from fornication, 10:36.180 --> 10:37.560 you're abstaining from alcohol, 10:37.820 --> 10:40.880 and you're living a life about helping other people, right? 10:41.100 --> 10:42.120 How about going out soul winning? 10:43.040 --> 10:45.200 You know, and saving those that are ready to perish 10:45.620 --> 10:46.920 and pulling them out of the fire, 10:47.200 --> 10:49.360 hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. 10:49.360 --> 10:51.340 You know, standing up for other people, 10:51.600 --> 10:53.920 looking out for other people, helping other people, 10:54.160 --> 10:55.080 thinking about other people, 10:55.160 --> 10:56.340 this is what makes you a good person. 10:57.300 --> 10:58.900 And so I think that the idea here is 10:58.900 --> 11:00.460 you start by being a good guy, 11:00.920 --> 11:03.060 that's step one toward finding the good gal 11:03.060 --> 11:04.280 is being a good guy. 11:04.720 --> 11:06.480 You can't just be a rotten dude 11:06.480 --> 11:09.520 and expect God to bless you with this ruby of a wife. 11:10.120 --> 11:11.800 You know, you should work on yourself 11:11.800 --> 11:14.360 and try to be the best possible Christian that you can be 11:14.360 --> 11:17.180 so that you can then be blessed with a prudent wife 11:17.180 --> 11:18.740 which the Bible says is from the Lord. 11:19.660 --> 11:20.860 Okay, so that's important. 11:22.280 --> 11:24.360 And so, you know, the same thing goes for women, 11:24.420 --> 11:26.860 obviously, you know, you wanna be the right kind of girl 11:26.860 --> 11:28.440 so that you can meet the right kind of guy, 11:28.840 --> 11:31.680 you know, because obviously water seeks its own level 11:32.340 --> 11:34.680 and birds of a feather flock together. 11:35.140 --> 11:36.620 You can tell a man who booses 11:36.620 --> 11:39.080 by the company he chooses, you know, 11:39.620 --> 11:40.760 and on and on it goes. 11:41.360 --> 11:42.940 So starting in verse number 10, 11:43.060 --> 11:45.320 we have the famous virtuous woman section. 11:45.820 --> 11:49.420 And if you'll notice this section is 22 verses long 11:49.420 --> 11:52.980 and whenever things are 22 verses long in the Bible, 11:53.520 --> 11:55.040 it's typically because they're connected 11:55.040 --> 11:56.200 to the Hebrew alphabet 11:56.200 --> 11:58.820 because the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters in it. 11:59.080 --> 12:00.500 Like if you go to Psalm 119, 12:01.020 --> 12:03.940 you'll see there are 22 sections of eight verses each 12:03.940 --> 12:06.940 and each of them is based on a letter of the Hebrew alphabet 12:06.940 --> 12:08.660 and it'll say in your King James Bible, 12:08.880 --> 12:11.360 Aleph, Bet, Gimel, Dahlet and so forth. 12:11.760 --> 12:13.880 And so this is actually a poem 12:14.380 --> 12:16.660 because remember Proverbs in the books of poetry, 12:17.180 --> 12:18.760 it's a poem, it's a crostic poem. 12:19.260 --> 12:21.400 So basically like verse 10 starts with Aleph, 12:21.440 --> 12:22.660 verse 11 starts with Bet, 12:22.840 --> 12:24.800 verse 12 starts with Gimel and on and on it goes. 12:25.180 --> 12:26.800 So it'd be sort of like if you had a poem 12:26.800 --> 12:30.540 where you started with an A, B, C, D, E, F, G. 12:30.980 --> 12:31.680 That's what this is. 12:31.780 --> 12:35.780 So this is like the ABCs of finding the virtuous woman. 12:36.120 --> 12:37.240 And it starts out in verse 10. 12:37.340 --> 12:39.020 It says, who can find a virtuous woman 12:39.520 --> 12:42.300 for her price is far above rubies. 12:42.880 --> 12:45.680 The heart of her husband does safely trust in her 12:46.160 --> 12:47.540 so that he shall have no need of spoil. 12:47.700 --> 12:50.140 And the first thing that I wanna point out 12:50.140 --> 12:52.040 when you're trying to find the virtuous woman, 12:52.440 --> 12:53.640 trying to find a godly spouse, 12:53.980 --> 12:55.880 the number one most important thing is 12:55.880 --> 12:58.060 don't you wanna marry somebody that you can trust? 12:59.100 --> 13:01.000 I mean look, what is more important 13:01.000 --> 13:03.320 in a marriage than trust? 13:04.220 --> 13:05.560 You wanna be able to trust, I mean look, 13:05.860 --> 13:08.400 if you're living in the same house with someone, 13:08.680 --> 13:10.040 you wanna be able to trust that person. 13:10.500 --> 13:12.880 If you're laying in the same bed next to somebody, 13:13.140 --> 13:15.280 you did sure wanna trust that person 13:15.280 --> 13:16.820 that you're laying next to. 13:16.980 --> 13:19.300 If you're giving someone a credit card, 13:19.500 --> 13:21.920 if you're putting their name on your bank account, 13:22.140 --> 13:23.920 if you're putting this person's name 13:23.920 --> 13:25.700 as the co-owner of your house, 13:26.240 --> 13:27.840 you know, I mean you're having children together. 13:28.020 --> 13:30.020 I mean, you wanna be able to trust that person
