02:59.040 --> 03:02.080 Now I wanna build a context to get back to the statement 03:02.080 --> 03:03.780 and then we're gonna finish the sermon talking 03:03.780 --> 03:06.080 a lot about the things that accompany salvation. 03:06.240 --> 03:07.980 But let's understand what this passage is saying. 03:08.080 --> 03:10.620 Look at chapter five, verse nine for a moment. 03:10.800 --> 03:10.940 It says, 03:21.500 --> 03:24.300 I love to take difficult passages of the Bible, 03:24.840 --> 03:25.800 rip them out of context 03:26.320 --> 03:28.540 and then suggest works-based salvation. 03:28.920 --> 03:30.080 Because notice here in verse nine, 03:30.260 --> 03:31.480 it says that Jesus Christ 03:31.860 --> 03:33.120 is the author of eternal salvation 03:33.580 --> 03:35.140 unto all of them that obey him. 03:35.920 --> 03:38.520 Question is, what does that mean to obey him here? 03:55.020 --> 03:57.660 And again, Hebrews is not an exhortation 03:57.660 --> 03:58.420 on how to get saved. 03:58.780 --> 04:00.820 That is not what Hebrews is talking about. 04:00.920 --> 04:01.680 That's not the context. 04:02.140 --> 04:04.320 He's talking to a group of people that are already saved. 04:04.600 --> 04:05.920 So we don't wanna go to epistles 04:06.500 --> 04:08.120 or context of scripture 04:08.120 --> 04:10.140 that are not explaining how to get saved 04:10.140 --> 04:12.260 to then have our clear doctrine on salvation. 04:12.660 --> 04:15.480 But you know, Romans 10 is a very clear passage 04:15.480 --> 04:17.660 on salvation and how to get saved 04:17.660 --> 04:19.440 than it's explaining what salvation looks like. 04:19.880 --> 04:20.500 But you know what? 04:20.520 --> 04:21.300 It uses the word obey. 04:22.100 --> 04:23.960 Look at it says in Romans chapter 10 verse 16. 04:25.480 --> 04:27.240 But they have not obeyed, notice this, 04:27.720 --> 04:30.200 the gospel for Isaiah's saith Lord 04:30.200 --> 04:31.660 who hath believed our report. 04:31.960 --> 04:33.880 So here it's talking about people not obeying 04:34.400 --> 04:35.760 but what was the not obeying? 04:35.860 --> 04:36.920 They didn't obey the gospel. 04:37.260 --> 04:38.740 And then it says, what does that look like? 04:39.080 --> 04:39.800 They didn't believe. 04:40.280 --> 04:42.220 It doesn't say that they didn't follow the commandments 04:42.220 --> 04:44.620 or they were sinners because that's everybody. 04:44.840 --> 04:46.100 We've already established that fact. 04:46.100 --> 04:48.480 That's just the reality of Romans chapter number three 04:48.480 --> 04:50.060 for all of sin and comes short of the glory of God. 04:50.320 --> 04:52.680 So what is it that the Jews did not do 04:52.680 --> 04:55.000 is they did not obey the gospel 04:55.000 --> 04:56.700 by believing in Jesus Christ. 04:57.500 --> 04:59.880 And of course it emphasizes in verse 17. 05:00.040 --> 05:01.860 So then faith comes by hearing 05:01.860 --> 05:02.680 and hearing by the word of God. 05:02.920 --> 05:05.580 So how do you obey to get eternal life? 05:05.860 --> 05:07.940 You hear the word of God and you believe it. 05:08.020 --> 05:08.640 That's the obedience. 05:08.800 --> 05:11.460 The obedience to the word of God being preached to you. 05:11.580 --> 05:13.200 You put your faith in Jesus Christ. 05:13.200 --> 05:15.980 That's the only obedience necessary for salvation. 05:16.240 --> 05:18.820 It's not a following the commandments to get saved. 05:19.020 --> 05:19.960 That's a false doctrine. 05:20.080 --> 05:21.200 I wanna go to another place though. 05:21.300 --> 05:22.580 Go to 2nd Thessalonians chapter two. 05:22.920 --> 05:24.060 2nd Thessalonians chapter number two 05:24.060 --> 05:26.600 because we're unpacking a very difficult portion 05:26.600 --> 05:27.460 of scripture this morning. 05:27.940 --> 05:29.340 I would argue that Hebrews six 05:29.340 --> 05:32.440 is one of the most challenging passages in the Bible. 05:32.920 --> 05:34.200 It's highly disputed. 05:34.440 --> 05:35.960 A lot of people have different ideas 05:36.480 --> 05:39.180 but I wanna do my best to slow down, 05:39.540 --> 05:40.320 take a little bit of time 05:40.320 --> 05:42.740 and for it to just be very easy to understand. 05:42.740 --> 05:45.500 Very easy to walk away and know what we're talking about. 05:45.760 --> 05:47.920 2nd Thessalonians chapter two, look at verse eight. 05:49.220 --> 05:51.600 And then show that wicked be revealed 05:52.020 --> 05:54.060 whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth 05:54.060 --> 05:56.420 and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming 05:56.420 --> 06:00.200 even him who's coming is after the working of Satan 06:00.200 --> 06:01.720 with all power and signs and lying wonders. 06:01.820 --> 06:04.280 He's talking about the antichrist coming in the future, 06:04.740 --> 06:07.800 being made manifest, the wicked being revealed. 06:08.180 --> 06:10.000 He does this by declaring himself God, 06:10.380 --> 06:11.640 standing in the holy place 06:11.640 --> 06:15.020 and demanding everybody worship him as God, okay? 06:50.220 --> 06:53.280 So again, in verse eight, 06:53.960 --> 06:55.920 what was the context here? 06:56.500 --> 06:58.140 He's saying that they obey, I'm sorry, 06:58.280 --> 07:00.900 I wanna give you the idea of that they're not believing. 07:01.100 --> 07:02.060 That's the reason why they're not saved. 07:02.300 --> 07:03.800 And then go to chapter one for a second 07:03.800 --> 07:04.540 and look at verse eight. 07:05.640 --> 07:07.860 And flaming fire taking vengeance on them 07:07.860 --> 07:09.220 that know not God and notice this 07:09.220 --> 07:12.820 and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ 07:12.820 --> 07:14.500 who should be punished with everlasting instruction 07:14.500 --> 07:16.040 from the presence of the Lord and from the glorious power. 07:16.360 --> 07:17.220 So in chapter two, 07:17.360 --> 07:18.960 we get the really clear explanation here. 07:19.260 --> 07:21.020 They love not the truth that they can be saved. 07:21.420 --> 07:23.480 They believe the lie, verse 12, 07:23.760 --> 07:25.660 that they all might be damned to believe not the truth 07:25.660 --> 07:27.200 but add pleasure in unrighteousness. 07:27.480 --> 07:28.440 Then in chapter one, 07:28.900 --> 07:30.800 where we understand the statement said 07:30.800 --> 07:32.700 it obeyed not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 07:32.880 --> 07:33.740 How do they not obey it? 07:33.740 --> 07:35.620 Because they didn't believe, okay? 07:36.260 --> 07:38.120 They're punished because they didn't believe. 07:38.780 --> 07:42.160 So if they didn't obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ 07:42.160 --> 07:44.600 and then we get the clarification in chapter two, 07:44.960 --> 07:45.860 what does that mean? 07:46.060 --> 07:47.580 It's not saying that they were just too sinful 07:48.300 --> 07:50.320 or they didn't give up their sins. 07:50.720 --> 07:51.900 It's that they did not believe. 07:52.060 --> 07:54.680 They did not love the truth that they could be saved. 07:54.940 --> 07:56.000 And so they believe the lie 07:56.000 --> 07:57.520 and they believe not the truth. 07:57.780 --> 08:00.540 And so therefore they are going to hell. 08:00.680 --> 08:03.380 So go back to Hebrews chapter number five. 08:03.380 --> 08:05.200 I just wanted to clarify again. 08:05.820 --> 08:07.720 Obedience in Hebrews chapter five 08:07.720 --> 08:09.420 is not teaching works-based salvation. 08:10.520 --> 08:12.680 Why? Because the Bible doesn't teach works-based salvation. 08:13.100 --> 08:15.600 You know, salvation has always been by faith. 08:16.040 --> 08:17.560 It was never works in the Old Testament. 08:18.100 --> 08:20.360 It was never works when Jesus preached it. 08:21.040 --> 08:22.460 It was at works in the future. 08:23.140 --> 08:25.140 And look, I can't even believe it. 08:25.260 --> 08:27.420 There are people out there, dispensationalists out there 08:27.420 --> 08:30.420 that teach that salvation was by works 08:30.420 --> 08:31.420 in the Old Testament. 08:32.090 --> 08:34.780 They teach that not only was salvation by works 08:34.780 --> 08:37.840 in the Old Testament, Jesus Christ preached salvation by works. 08:38.700 --> 08:41.220 And that Paul was the first person 08:41.220 --> 08:43.300 to ever preach salvation by grace only. 08:44.320 --> 08:46.520 And that it's his gospel and it was a secret. 08:47.200 --> 08:48.380 And then in the future, 08:49.000 --> 08:50.720 when we get to the everlasting gospel, 08:50.860 --> 08:51.660 it's back to works again. 08:52.520 --> 08:54.540 So it's just like, basically it's just like, 08:54.660 --> 08:56.960 works for 4,000 years, works. 08:57.200 --> 08:58.280 Jesus is preaching works. 08:58.760 --> 09:01.500 Then Paul is saying like, oh, it's different for us. 09:01.600 --> 09:02.360 We're just special. 09:02.480 --> 09:03.320 We get in by grace. 09:03.860 --> 09:05.620 But then as soon as the tribulation hits, 09:05.740 --> 09:06.840 back to works again. 09:07.900 --> 09:09.940 I'm glad that we're in this dispensation of grace. 09:10.140 --> 09:10.580 You know what I mean? 09:11.360 --> 09:13.180 And of course, these people that believe this stuff 09:13.180 --> 09:17.300 believe so many heresies, so many false doctrines. 09:17.600 --> 09:18.980 They're so over the top. 09:19.360 --> 09:22.000 And again, what you notice is they have a common pattern 09:22.000 --> 09:24.900 because it's typically coming from a Ruckmanite 09:24.900 --> 09:27.200 viewpoint that has this kind of over the top. 09:27.200 --> 09:29.580 And it's like, oh, what else did they take over the top? 09:30.180 --> 09:32.000 How about the King James Bible issue, right? 09:32.400 --> 09:33.540 They take that over the top. 09:33.680 --> 09:34.920 It's just everything's over the top. 09:35.060 --> 09:36.500 Everything's just like this over literal. 09:37.000 --> 09:37.920 So they hear the word obey 09:37.920 --> 09:39.500 and they're just like, see, work salvation. 09:40.000 --> 09:41.980 No, if we compare with other passages, 09:42.220 --> 09:43.560 we realize the obedience here 09:43.560 --> 09:45.380 is in reference to not believing the gospel. 09:46.020 --> 09:48.740 And look, Jesus and Paul did not preach different gospels. 09:49.060 --> 09:50.980 They preached the exact same gospel. 09:51.680 --> 09:53.800 And you're like, how do you even reconcile 09:53.800 --> 09:55.180 these Ruckmanites when they say, 09:56.240 --> 09:57.880 Paul's saying like, let any man be a curse 09:57.880 --> 09:58.900 that would preach another gospel. 09:58.980 --> 10:00.780 And they're like, oh, that's for this dispensation. 10:01.340 --> 10:02.760 It's like, well, it doesn't say that. 10:03.940 --> 10:06.520 So by their logic, they're making Jesus a curse. 10:07.020 --> 10:08.600 And of course, no man by the spirit of God 10:08.600 --> 10:09.580 called Jesus Christ a curse. 10:09.840 --> 10:11.080 So it sounds like these guys don't have 10:11.080 --> 10:11.860 the spirit of God at all. 10:12.880 --> 10:13.780 I'll just be honest with you, 10:13.920 --> 10:15.920 I just can't believe someone saved 10:15.920 --> 10:18.940 that thinks salvation was by works at any point in time. 10:21.780 --> 10:23.680 Maybe you can believe whatever you want, 10:23.680 --> 10:25.180 but I just don't believe that. 10:25.480 --> 10:27.860 I think you just don't understand the gospel at that point. 10:28.860 --> 10:31.420 And of course, you don't understand what Jesus did for us. 10:31.840 --> 10:34.640 Like, that's a different sermon, okay, sorry. 10:35.880 --> 10:38.020 Let's keep going with our passage for a moment, all right? 24:49.340 --> 24:51.180 Then we get to another verse, verse seven. 24:51.180 --> 24:55.560 Four, this is another because, here's another reason. 24:56.260 --> 24:57.840 Why would we stop preaching basic sermons? 24:57.900 --> 24:59.260 Number one, because you can't lose your salvation. 24:59.720 --> 25:02.080 Here's number two, why would we stop preaching basics? 25:03.060 --> 25:04.780 Four, the earth which drinketh in the rain 25:04.780 --> 25:05.760 that cometh off upon it 25:06.240 --> 25:08.400 and bringeth forth herbs meet for them 25:08.400 --> 25:10.220 by whom it is dressed, received a blessing from God. 25:10.640 --> 25:12.160 But that which beareth thorns and briers 25:12.160 --> 25:14.460 is rejected and is nigh into cursing 25:14.460 --> 25:15.400 whose end is to be burned. 25:15.900 --> 25:19.780 So he gives a parable of essentially two results. 25:19.780 --> 25:24.780 One person receiving, it's like talking about vegetation here. 25:24.900 --> 25:29.620 Vegetation receives this water and creates fruit, 25:29.980 --> 25:31.720 the other one produces thorns, okay? 25:32.300 --> 25:33.860 But here's the thing, some people would say, 25:33.960 --> 25:35.820 oh that sounds like an unsaved person. 25:36.640 --> 25:39.820 But actually in the Bible we have so many examples of this 25:39.820 --> 25:41.860 that are talking about saved people, okay? 25:42.260 --> 25:45.700 So the language by itself could be used different ways. 25:46.100 --> 25:47.000 That's what parables are. 25:47.680 --> 25:50.780 Parables often can be interpreted in lots of different ways 25:50.780 --> 25:52.100 and we have to kind of try and figure out 25:52.100 --> 25:54.280 what's the right interpretation with a parable. 25:54.480 --> 25:55.740 And a parable in the mouth of fools 25:56.240 --> 25:58.780 is just gonna be lame and not make sense. 25:59.160 --> 26:01.020 So let's compare this with another parable 26:01.600 --> 26:03.680 that is using the exact same language. 26:03.800 --> 26:05.180 Keep your finger, go to Luke chapter number eight. 26:05.420 --> 26:06.940 Go to Luke chapter number eight and let's decide 26:06.940 --> 26:08.960 if someone can have thorns and be saved. 26:10.360 --> 26:12.720 And I'm gonna show you that the Bible teaches clearly 26:12.720 --> 26:15.740 that someone can have thorns and be saved. 26:16.160 --> 26:19.300 And what would be the point of not having thorns 26:19.300 --> 26:20.140 is so that you're fruitful. 26:20.340 --> 26:22.520 It says in Luke chapter eight, look at verse number seven. 26:24.500 --> 26:26.680 And some fell among thorns and the thorns 26:26.680 --> 26:29.680 sprang up with it and choked it, okay?
