WEBVTT 00:00.000 --> 00:02.120 Men, 2 Kings chapter number 14, 00:02.480 --> 00:04.800 if you recall last week in chapter 13, 00:05.180 --> 00:07.920 we kind of stepped away from the southern kingdom of Judah 00:08.420 --> 00:10.540 and we're talking about the northern kingdom of Israel. 00:10.960 --> 00:13.060 That's kind of how the book of 2 Kings is. 00:13.140 --> 00:15.720 It'll go back and forth between northern and southern kingdoms. 00:16.120 --> 00:18.080 So we're picking up now where we left off. 00:18.180 --> 00:21.200 And if you remember that Joash was the young boy 00:21.200 --> 00:23.500 who started raining when he's eight years old 00:23.500 --> 00:25.840 and he did what was right on the side of the Lord 00:25.840 --> 00:28.080 until the death of Jehoi to the priest. 00:28.080 --> 00:30.860 And then after Jehoi to the priest died 00:30.860 --> 00:33.300 who was his greatest spiritual influence, 00:33.620 --> 00:35.440 his main leader, his mentor, 00:35.940 --> 00:37.680 once Jehoi to the high priest died, 00:38.040 --> 00:41.520 remember all those flatterers came and made obeisance to him 00:41.520 --> 00:44.280 and then he led the nation into idolatry 00:44.820 --> 00:46.960 and he ended up being murdered 00:46.960 --> 00:48.860 and not being blessed by God. 00:49.240 --> 00:51.380 Well, what's interesting here is that in chapter 14, 00:51.640 --> 00:53.080 we hear about his son. 00:53.200 --> 00:55.600 It says in verse number one in the second year 00:55.600 --> 00:58.180 of Jehoi, son of Jehoi, king of Israel, 00:58.660 --> 01:02.100 reigned Amaziah, the son of Jehoi, king of Judah. 01:02.260 --> 01:03.960 And what we're gonna see about Amaziah, 01:04.400 --> 01:06.780 the son of Jehoi, is that he's basically, 01:07.020 --> 01:10.200 just like his dad, where he starts out doing good. 01:10.620 --> 01:13.060 He starts out doing right in the side of the Lord 01:13.060 --> 01:16.040 and then later in life he falls away, 01:16.580 --> 01:19.380 gets into idolatry, screws up his life. 01:19.720 --> 01:21.780 And what's interesting too is that they both 01:21.780 --> 01:23.380 end up dying the same way 01:23.380 --> 01:27.120 because just as Joash is murdered by a conspiracy 01:27.120 --> 01:28.320 within his own kingdom, 01:28.760 --> 01:31.520 it's exactly what's gonna happen to Amaziah, 01:31.860 --> 01:34.300 kind of just showing you that history repeats itself 01:34.300 --> 01:36.820 and if you do the same stupid things 01:36.820 --> 01:39.460 that other people did, you're probably gonna end up 01:39.460 --> 01:42.300 the same failure and having the same problems. 01:43.060 --> 01:44.520 And so what we need to understand is that 01:44.520 --> 01:47.880 there's a big problem with people not making it 01:47.880 --> 01:50.120 all the way to the finish line in the Christian life. 01:50.560 --> 01:52.860 I mean, how many people have we known 01:52.860 --> 01:56.040 in our lives that used to be doing great things for God? 03:05.760 --> 03:07.500 And we see that in both Joash's life 03:08.080 --> 03:09.880 and in his son, Amaziah. 03:10.700 --> 03:12.060 So look what the Bible says in verse two. 03:12.200 --> 03:15.100 It says he was 25 years old when he began to reign 03:15.100 --> 03:17.480 and reigned 29 years in Jerusalem 03:17.480 --> 03:20.320 and his mother's name was Jehovah Dan of Jerusalem 03:20.320 --> 03:22.960 and he did that which was right in the side of the Lord 03:23.540 --> 03:26.000 yet not like David his father. 03:26.720 --> 03:30.720 He did according to all things as Joash's father did 03:30.720 --> 03:33.540 and really what the Bible is actually saying 03:33.540 --> 03:34.980 if we compare the two stories 03:35.400 --> 03:38.160 is really that they did right for a while 03:38.160 --> 03:39.740 and then they did wrong afterward 03:39.740 --> 03:40.820 because what you have to understand 03:40.820 --> 03:42.720 when you're reading Kings and Chronicles 03:42.720 --> 03:45.180 is that God is sort of grading everybody 03:45.180 --> 03:47.040 on a past fail kind of a grade. 03:47.360 --> 03:49.560 It's like you either did right in the side of the Lord 03:49.560 --> 03:51.520 or you did evil in the side of the Lord 03:51.520 --> 03:54.160 as far as just overall looking at your kingdom. 03:54.740 --> 03:57.700 In this case, there has to be this caveat of like, 03:57.880 --> 04:00.220 well, he did right in the side of the Lord 04:00.220 --> 04:02.160 but it wasn't like David 04:02.640 --> 04:04.580 where he's worshiping the Lord all the way to the end. 04:05.040 --> 04:07.060 It was more like his father Joash 04:07.060 --> 04:09.280 and we know that that was a situation 04:09.280 --> 04:12.880 where he did right until he stopped doing right, okay? 05:58.100 --> 05:59.280 Look at verse number five. 05:59.480 --> 06:00.420 It says that it came to pass 06:00.420 --> 06:03.360 as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand 06:04.020 --> 06:05.600 that he slew his servants 06:05.600 --> 06:07.020 which had slain the king, his father. 06:07.140 --> 06:08.340 Because remember, it was a conspiracy 06:08.820 --> 06:10.280 within his own kingdom, 06:10.500 --> 06:11.360 within his own household 06:11.900 --> 06:13.780 of the servants that slew his father. 06:14.360 --> 06:15.520 So the first thing he does 06:15.520 --> 06:17.380 is he executes these people, right? 06:17.960 --> 06:19.300 He slew his servants 06:19.300 --> 06:21.200 which had slain his king to father. 06:21.380 --> 06:22.220 And here's the thing, 06:22.500 --> 06:24.340 is that the Bible teaches the death penalty. 06:25.640 --> 06:27.320 The death penalty is biblical 06:27.780 --> 06:29.760 and it's not just biblical in the Old Testament, 06:30.020 --> 06:31.580 it's biblical in the New Testament as well. 06:32.360 --> 06:33.920 Jesus reiterated the death penalty. 06:33.920 --> 06:36.660 Also, the epistles of Paul reiterate the death penalty 06:36.660 --> 06:38.820 because in Romans chapter 13, 06:39.260 --> 06:40.540 God talks about the fact 06:40.540 --> 06:42.660 that he ordained human government 06:42.660 --> 06:45.760 for the punishment of evil doers. 06:46.080 --> 06:46.980 And the Bible says, 06:47.480 --> 06:49.260 if thou do that which is evil, 06:49.680 --> 06:50.780 be afraid, 06:51.500 --> 06:54.180 for he beareth not the sword in vain. 06:54.940 --> 06:56.680 He is a revenger. 06:56.860 --> 06:58.860 He's the Avenger of God, the minister of God, 06:59.280 --> 07:02.560 a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 07:02.560 --> 07:07.320 So the Bible says that when violent criminals 07:07.760 --> 07:08.780 are executed, 07:09.520 --> 07:11.720 that the one who executes them 07:11.720 --> 07:12.980 is doing the Lord's work, 07:13.220 --> 07:14.960 he is the minister of God, 07:15.380 --> 07:18.420 a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 07:18.760 --> 07:19.620 And you say, well, how do you know 07:19.620 --> 07:20.420 how to talk about the death penalty? 07:20.640 --> 07:22.720 Because it says he beareth not the sword in vain. 07:23.680 --> 07:27.100 Okay, the sword is only used for one punishment 07:27.740 --> 07:28.520 and that's death. 07:28.520 --> 07:32.280 They don't spank people with a sword, okay? 08:01.460 --> 08:02.760 Because you have second degree murder, 08:02.980 --> 08:03.780 you have manslaughter. 08:04.300 --> 08:08.840 First degree murder is premeditated murder, okay? 08:09.040 --> 08:12.800 As opposed to you had no plans of killing someone 08:13.220 --> 08:14.960 and just in a heat of passion, 08:15.400 --> 08:16.600 in the heat of the moment, 08:16.800 --> 08:19.500 you lose your temper and attack someone 08:19.880 --> 08:21.600 and it's like, oh, what have I done? 12:21.820 --> 12:26.180 But look at verse six, but the children of the murderers, 12:26.200 --> 12:26.900 he slew not. 12:27.740 --> 12:29.380 According unto that, which is written 12:29.380 --> 12:30.720 in the book of the law of Moses, 12:31.100 --> 12:32.520 wherein the Lord commanded saying, 12:32.940 --> 12:35.360 the father shall not be put to death for the children, 12:35.880 --> 12:37.700 nor the children be put to death for the fathers, 12:38.200 --> 12:41.800 but every man shall be put to death for his own sin. 12:42.000 --> 12:43.480 Now let's look at that in the Bible. 12:44.400 --> 12:47.220 Go to Deuteronomy 24, actually go to Ezekiel 18. 12:47.800 --> 12:49.520 Go to Ezekiel 18, I'm gonna read for you 12:49.520 --> 12:51.300 from Deuteronomy from the law of God. 12:52.180 --> 12:54.120 But this is expounded more in Ezekiel. 12:54.580 --> 12:56.240 It says in Deuteronomy 24, 16, 12:56.420 --> 12:58.760 the fathers shall not be put to death 12:58.760 --> 13:01.680 for the children, neither shall the children 13:01.680 --> 13:02.860 be put to death for the fathers. 13:03.440 --> 13:05.560 Every man shall be put to death for his own sin. 13:05.680 --> 13:08.180 And so the Bible is saying it is not right 13:08.560 --> 13:12.340 to punish the parents for what the children do, 13:12.440 --> 13:15.480 or to punish the children for what the parents do, right? 13:15.600 --> 13:18.100 This is part of biblical justice. 13:18.600 --> 13:20.920 Everyone is accountable for their own actions. 13:21.240 --> 13:23.820 And boy, is this something that is missing 13:23.820 --> 13:28.620 in 2026 America, being responsible for your own actions. 13:29.240 --> 13:32.480 Everybody always wants to blame everyone else 13:32.480 --> 13:34.280 for why they did the things that they did. 13:34.580 --> 13:35.020 And you know what? 13:35.140 --> 13:36.580 When people are serial killers 13:37.080 --> 13:39.720 and when people go out and do all these horrific crimes, 13:40.020 --> 13:42.480 they'll go back and look at their childhood and say, 13:42.760 --> 13:45.040 oh, it's because they had this bad teacher 13:45.540 --> 13:47.440 and they had these bad parents 13:47.440 --> 13:49.420 and they had these bad neighbors 13:49.420 --> 13:52.120 and they had the gay uncle that molested them 13:52.120 --> 13:52.480 and whatever. 13:53.000 --> 13:54.380 It's like, okay, you know what? 13:54.480 --> 13:56.480 I'm sorry that those horrible things 13:56.480 --> 13:57.460 happened to that person. 13:57.680 --> 13:58.640 But at the end of the day, 13:58.640 --> 14:01.860 for every serial killer and maniac 14:01.860 --> 14:02.920 who went through those things, 14:03.100 --> 14:04.600 you can find a whole bunch of other people 14:04.600 --> 14:05.960 who went through those same things 14:05.960 --> 14:10.040 and came out and did right, right? 37:48.140 --> 37:49.440 What happened in that gap? 37:49.540 --> 37:50.740 Let's go back to 2 Kings 14. 37:51.320 --> 37:52.620 What happened in the gap between 37:52.620 --> 37:55.060 verses seven and eight is that he adopted 37:55.060 --> 37:56.400 the false gods of Edom. 37:57.040 --> 37:58.320 He started worshiping idols 37:58.780 --> 38:00.580 and then a preacher came and read 38:00.580 --> 38:01.100 and rebuked him. 38:01.440 --> 38:02.900 He told the preacher to shut up 38:02.900 --> 38:04.320 or he was going to physically hurt him. 38:04.580 --> 38:06.600 And then the preacher's just like, okay, bye. 38:07.660 --> 38:09.380 And then now it kind of makes sense 38:09.900 --> 38:11.940 why he does this stupid thing 38:12.460 --> 38:14.880 of calling out the much larger, 38:14.920 --> 38:17.600 more powerful northern kingdom of Israel 38:17.600 --> 38:19.080 that he's not going to be able to defeat. 38:19.440 --> 38:22.380 This is a much more serious enemy than Edom, okay? 38:23.480 --> 38:25.260 But he gets puffed up and prideful 38:25.260 --> 38:26.500 and God's just blinding him 38:26.500 --> 38:27.620 because God's not blessing him 38:27.620 --> 38:29.280 because he's not right with God. 38:30.620 --> 38:33.540 And so it says in verse number nine, 38:33.640 --> 38:35.620 here's the response of the king of Israel. 38:36.120 --> 38:37.280 Jehovah asked the king of Israel 38:37.280 --> 38:39.920 sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, 38:40.120 --> 38:42.640 saying the thistle that was in Lebanon 38:42.640 --> 38:44.520 sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon 38:45.060 --> 38:47.680 saying, give thy daughter to my son to wife. 38:48.160 --> 38:49.660 And they're passed by a wild beast 38:49.660 --> 38:51.520 that was in Lebanon and trod down the thistle. 38:51.600 --> 38:53.360 So he's giving him an analogy saying, look, 38:53.920 --> 38:57.400 the most impressive, powerful tree in Lebanon 38:57.400 --> 38:58.120 is the cedar. 38:59.120 --> 39:01.660 And then you just have some little stupid weed, 39:01.940 --> 39:02.660 some thistle. 39:03.100 --> 39:06.080 And he's saying basically, you're that little thistle 39:06.080 --> 39:07.460 and I'm the cedar. 39:07.840 --> 39:10.900 And like, how dare you call me out?
