WEBVTT 00:00.000 --> 00:03.760 Sermon this morning is be different, be different. 00:03.960 --> 00:06.400 Titus chapter 2 in verse 14 says, 00:06.580 --> 00:09.300 who gave himself for us that he might redeem us 00:09.300 --> 00:11.800 from all iniquity and purify unto himself 00:11.800 --> 00:15.820 a peculiar people zealous of good works. 00:15.920 --> 00:17.680 I want you to notice there that it says 00:17.680 --> 00:20.980 that he's redeeming to himself a peculiar people. 00:21.760 --> 00:23.980 This is referring to the fact that God 00:23.980 --> 00:25.920 is separating us as his people, 00:25.920 --> 00:29.460 as being holy, as being separated, 00:29.980 --> 00:31.660 as being different than everyone else. 00:32.020 --> 00:33.260 And make no mistake about it, 00:33.300 --> 00:35.320 God wants us to be distinctly different 00:35.780 --> 00:37.960 from not just the world, that's obvious, 00:38.280 --> 00:39.740 but even from other Christians, 00:40.080 --> 00:41.180 even from other churches, 00:41.660 --> 00:43.720 even from different individuals 00:43.720 --> 00:45.620 that claim to be believers, 00:45.900 --> 00:47.840 he wants us to be distinctly different 00:47.840 --> 00:49.760 and he wants us to demonstrate that 00:49.760 --> 00:50.800 in our personal lives. 00:51.140 --> 00:53.300 Go with me if you would to 1 Peter chapter 2, 00:53.360 --> 00:53.740 if you would. 00:53.740 --> 00:55.140 1 Peter chapter 2. 00:56.200 --> 00:58.780 1 Peter chapter 2, let me start off by saying 00:58.780 --> 01:00.680 that God wants us to be a peculiar people 01:01.200 --> 01:02.680 and it specifically says that 01:02.680 --> 01:04.780 he wants us to be zealous of good works. 01:04.880 --> 01:07.380 So that's one way that God wants us to be different 01:07.380 --> 01:09.840 is not just in the works that we do, 01:10.120 --> 01:13.560 but that we do them zealously, passionately, 01:13.920 --> 01:16.580 that we would be zealous over the ministry, 01:17.080 --> 01:18.160 over the things of God, 01:18.360 --> 01:19.500 over the preaching of the word of God. 01:19.740 --> 01:21.220 This means that we can't be lukewarm. 01:21.220 --> 01:23.340 This means we can't be apathetic 01:23.340 --> 01:24.360 towards the things of God. 01:24.580 --> 01:26.340 We can't be apathetic towards church, 01:26.620 --> 01:27.500 towards the Bible. 01:27.900 --> 01:30.580 The Bible commands us to have fervency, right? 01:31.480 --> 01:33.540 Be fervent in business, the Bible says, 01:33.900 --> 01:36.920 to be passionate, to have a cloak of zeal 01:36.920 --> 01:38.580 when we serve the Lord. 01:38.720 --> 01:39.900 Why? Because we're saved, right? 01:39.980 --> 01:40.660 We have the Bible. 01:41.060 --> 01:41.960 We have Christ. 01:42.400 --> 01:43.840 We have the right gospel. 01:43.920 --> 01:44.880 We have salvation. 01:45.220 --> 01:47.720 We are a treasure unto the Lord. 01:47.980 --> 01:49.320 Therefore, whatever we do, 01:49.320 --> 01:50.480 we should do with all our might. 01:51.480 --> 01:53.380 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, 01:53.460 --> 01:55.300 do with thy might, the Bible says. 01:55.740 --> 01:58.000 And obviously we could apply this to your job, 01:58.360 --> 01:59.640 you could apply this to your family, 01:59.940 --> 02:01.920 but just being a Christian in general 02:01.920 --> 02:04.840 requires for us to have some zeal about ourselves, right? 02:05.580 --> 02:07.700 He says be zealous of good works. 02:07.820 --> 02:08.920 He said, well, you know, Pastor, 02:09.260 --> 02:11.180 I know this one false religion 02:11.180 --> 02:13.020 and they seem to be very zealous 02:13.020 --> 02:14.060 over the things that they do. 02:14.460 --> 02:17.240 Well, Titus chapter one and verse 16 says this, 02:17.840 --> 02:19.860 excuse me, they profess that they know God, 02:20.300 --> 02:23.360 but in works they deny him being abominable 02:23.360 --> 02:26.260 and disobedient and unto every good work reprobate. 02:26.780 --> 02:28.260 So just because someone participates 02:28.260 --> 02:29.180 in what we would consider 02:29.180 --> 02:31.000 to be an outward expression of works 02:31.000 --> 02:33.400 doesn't mean that they're works that God accepts, right? 02:33.920 --> 02:35.920 And it doesn't mean that just because they're zealous, 02:36.100 --> 02:38.840 it means that it just lends veracity to their message, 02:39.260 --> 02:40.980 lends veracity to their beliefs, 02:41.260 --> 02:42.280 because at the end of the day, 02:42.520 --> 02:43.580 you know, the apostle Paul, 02:43.860 --> 02:45.160 prior to him being saved, 02:45.160 --> 02:46.760 the Bible says that he was zealous 02:47.240 --> 02:50.300 of his forefathers' religions, of the Jews' religion. 02:50.600 --> 02:52.400 And we obviously know that he was in the wrong, right? 02:52.860 --> 02:54.800 So just because someone is zealous and passionate 02:54.800 --> 02:56.020 about their false religion, 02:56.260 --> 02:57.860 it doesn't lend veracity to it, 02:57.980 --> 02:59.900 just because they get a burning in the bosom 02:59.900 --> 03:01.860 when they claim to read their false book, 03:02.060 --> 03:05.200 just because they give their lives to just devotion 03:05.200 --> 03:07.480 to their lies and to their religion, 03:07.840 --> 03:09.840 to their church doesn't mean it's true. 03:10.400 --> 03:12.400 God wants us to be zealous of good works 03:12.400 --> 03:14.240 and good works, according to the Bible, 03:14.240 --> 03:17.140 or referring to that which is done in Christ, 03:17.440 --> 03:18.700 that which is done in salvation, 03:19.260 --> 03:22.120 that which is done by saved people, right? 03:22.580 --> 03:23.940 The Bible says in 1 Peter, 03:24.040 --> 03:25.240 look at chapter two if you would. 03:26.160 --> 03:28.860 1 Peter chapter two and verse nine, 03:29.300 --> 03:29.920 it says here, 03:29.920 --> 03:31.920 but ye are a chosen generation, 03:32.560 --> 03:35.140 a royal priesthood, a holy nation, 03:35.840 --> 03:36.820 a peculiar people, 03:37.380 --> 03:39.360 that ye should show forth the praises of him 03:39.360 --> 03:42.540 with called yet of darkness into his marvelous light. 03:42.640 --> 03:45.880 This is obviously a quotation from the Old Testament 03:46.460 --> 03:49.320 when God would address and describe his people. 03:49.760 --> 03:50.780 He wanted everyone to know 03:50.780 --> 03:52.520 that they were the chosen people of God, 03:52.760 --> 03:55.200 that they were a peculiar treasure unto him 03:55.200 --> 03:57.500 based upon that old covenant. 03:57.620 --> 03:58.660 Well, now we're in the New Testament. 03:59.200 --> 04:02.360 And as Peter is writing to those in Cappadocia, 04:02.820 --> 04:04.940 Bethany, Pontius, Galatia, 04:05.360 --> 04:07.280 obviously this is referring to Gentile believers, 04:07.500 --> 04:08.360 it's not referring to Jews. 04:09.160 --> 04:11.320 You know, this transitions over and says 04:11.320 --> 04:13.120 that we are the chosen people of God, 04:13.680 --> 04:15.940 we are the royal priesthood, 04:16.200 --> 04:18.560 we are the holy spiritual nation, 04:19.100 --> 04:21.300 and it says that we're the peculiar people, okay? 04:22.340 --> 04:24.980 And it specifically says at the end of verse nine, 04:25.380 --> 04:27.960 it says that ye should show forth the praises of him 04:27.960 --> 04:29.600 who hath called the yet of darkness 04:29.600 --> 04:31.360 into his marvelous light. 04:31.660 --> 04:34.620 Meaning that obviously God views us as his chosen people, 04:34.860 --> 04:37.520 but God wants us to demonstrate that to the world as well. 04:37.760 --> 04:39.040 Through our light, right? 04:39.500 --> 04:42.220 The Bible tells us, let your light so shine before men 04:42.220 --> 04:43.960 that they may see your good works 04:43.960 --> 04:46.680 and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 04:46.780 --> 04:48.300 That means that there's Christians out there 04:48.300 --> 04:50.420 that have a dim light, right? 04:50.520 --> 04:52.760 They're not necessarily shining forth the praises of him 04:52.760 --> 04:54.880 who hath called them out of darkness. 04:55.280 --> 04:57.120 They're still involved in sin, 04:57.560 --> 04:59.600 they're living godless and worldly lives. 04:59.820 --> 05:03.120 They're not necessarily allowing their minds to be reformed 05:03.120 --> 05:03.980 according to the Bible, 05:04.380 --> 05:05.740 and so when the world looks at them, 05:05.760 --> 05:07.720 they don't really see anything different about them. 05:08.220 --> 05:09.540 And in fact, in a lot of ways, 05:09.840 --> 05:13.200 sometimes they're a bad testimony to Christianity, right? 05:13.600 --> 05:13.800 Why? 05:13.940 --> 05:15.920 Because they're living a godless life, 05:16.040 --> 05:17.640 maybe they're involved in fornication, 05:18.120 --> 05:20.020 they're involved in drunkenness, 05:20.280 --> 05:21.660 they're involved in drugs, 05:21.980 --> 05:22.980 they're not in church, 05:23.380 --> 05:25.180 and so when people find out that they're Christians 05:25.180 --> 05:26.580 but they're living a certain way, 05:26.780 --> 05:28.520 it causes people to kind of think, 05:28.680 --> 05:30.040 why are you being such a hypocrite? 05:30.840 --> 05:31.040 You know? 05:31.400 --> 05:33.340 And what God's will is for us, 05:33.380 --> 05:34.860 is for us to show forth that light. 05:35.340 --> 05:38.480 Show forth the light of holiness, of righteousness 05:39.060 --> 05:41.140 as his peculiar people. 05:41.260 --> 05:42.760 Go to Leviticus chapter 20, if you would. 05:42.900 --> 05:43.760 Leviticus chapter 20. 05:44.280 --> 05:45.780 The title of the sermon is Be Different. 05:46.460 --> 05:48.200 The goal for us as Christians 05:48.200 --> 05:51.260 is that we would be distinguished from everyone else, 05:51.760 --> 05:53.440 not just in how we believe, 05:53.620 --> 05:56.140 but also in our conduct, our conversation. 05:57.000 --> 05:58.940 God wants the world to look at us 05:58.940 --> 06:01.040 and say there's something different about them. 06:01.520 --> 06:02.680 Leviticus chapter 20, 06:03.480 --> 06:06.720 and let's look down at verse number 23, it says, 06:07.180 --> 06:08.720 and you shall not walk in the manner, 06:09.480 --> 06:11.540 Leviticus chapter 20, verse 23, 06:12.020 --> 06:14.380 and you shall not walk in the manner of the nation, 06:15.000 --> 06:16.580 which I cast out before you, 06:17.000 --> 06:18.220 for they committed all these things 06:18.220 --> 06:19.680 and therefore I abhorred them. 06:20.220 --> 06:21.300 So one of the first things 06:21.300 --> 06:23.920 that God essentially teaches his people 06:23.920 --> 06:24.900 when being different, 06:25.140 --> 06:27.660 is he's saying, hey, don't be like the other nations. 06:28.380 --> 06:30.200 Don't try to emulate the other nations. 06:30.800 --> 06:31.800 And when he says other nations, 06:31.960 --> 06:33.220 we can interpret this in a New Testament 06:33.220 --> 06:35.280 to mean like the unsaved, right? 06:36.000 --> 06:38.260 Don't be, you know, you're the spiritual nation 06:38.260 --> 06:40.400 made up of a spiritual house, 06:41.080 --> 06:43.000 built up a spiritual house and so forth. 06:43.240 --> 06:44.860 Don't be like the other houses. 06:45.380 --> 06:47.140 Don't be like the other nations. 06:47.480 --> 06:49.200 This is similar to what the apostle Paul said, 06:49.200 --> 06:51.280 I testify in the Lord that you walk 06:51.280 --> 06:54.840 not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their minds, 06:54.900 --> 06:56.920 having their understanding darkened, 06:57.280 --> 06:59.960 being alienated from the life of God 06:59.960 --> 07:01.260 through the ignorance that is in them 07:01.260 --> 07:02.740 because of the blindness of their heart. 07:02.980 --> 07:05.520 God saying, hey, don't emulate or copy 07:05.520 --> 07:06.900 the way unsaved people live. 07:07.200 --> 07:08.120 Don't be like the other nations. 07:08.500 --> 07:09.560 Don't copy their customs. 07:10.180 --> 07:12.860 You know, the Bible also says in Jeremiah chapter 10, 07:13.260 --> 07:15.540 be not dismayed at the signs of heaven 07:15.900 --> 07:17.900 for the heathen are dismayed at them, right? 07:18.320 --> 07:20.680 Basically saying like, hey don't copy the customs, 07:21.140 --> 07:23.780 don't copy the practices, the ideologies, 07:24.040 --> 07:25.940 the philosophies of this world. 07:26.020 --> 07:27.260 Why, because you're a spiritual nation, 07:27.740 --> 07:29.500 you're supposed to be different, okay? 07:30.980 --> 07:33.040 He says, and by the way he also says in verse 23 07:33.040 --> 07:35.420 for I, I, I abhorred them, okay? 07:35.620 --> 07:36.920 Let me explain to you what abhorred means. 07:37.440 --> 07:38.740 You know, today we don't necessarily 07:38.740 --> 07:40.060 use that word a whole lot. 07:40.160 --> 07:42.220 We just say, hate, okay? 07:42.800 --> 07:44.100 So the Bible is telling us here 07:44.100 --> 07:45.700 that God hate of the Canaanites. 07:46.220 --> 07:50.740 and you know you have this this idea here that God loves everyone and in 07:50.740 --> 07:54.980 general we know that he does because God so loved the world that he gave his 07:54.980 --> 07:58.480 only begotten son but hold on a second we need a balanced view of this as well 07:58.480 --> 08:05.240 though you know and often that you know that position is fomented so much that 08:05.240 --> 08:08.400 that automatically means in the minds of people that God doesn't hate but 08:08.400 --> 08:12.220 folks you know their hell exists and hell's God's ultimate expression of 08:12.220 --> 08:16.780 hate because you don't send someone to hell that you love okay and there's 08:16.780 --> 08:21.980 multiple examples in the Bible where God specifically says I hate them you know 08:21.980 --> 08:25.880 the Bible tells us in Psalm 5 5 the wicked shall not stand in thy sight thou 08:25.880 --> 08:29.240 hate us all workers of iniquity and you know you don't need to go to the 08:29.240 --> 08:32.460 Hebrew to try to figure out what he means by that it's pretty clear okay 08:32.460 --> 08:38.040 he abhors them he hates them we also see I believe it's in Hosea chapter 9 08:38.040 --> 08:43.720 verse 15 he specifically tells Israel you know therefore I have hated them and 08:43.720 --> 08:47.040 in case you didn't understand what that meant he says I will love them no more 08:48.300 --> 08:54.260 okay you know and so we see here that these nations that there were that he's 08:54.260 --> 08:58.260 removing from Canaan land in order for Israel to occupy the land he's 08:58.260 --> 09:02.500 saying man I hate these people because they're full of infanticide sodomy 09:03.340 --> 09:08.260 bestiality all manner of abominations therefore don't act like that don't act 09:08.260 --> 09:12.860 like some homo don't act like some heathen don't act like some idolater I 09:12.860 --> 09:17.520 hated them that's the reason I removed them from the land so you shall not 09:17.520 --> 09:20.660 walk after the manner of the nation which I cast out before you for they 09:20.660 --> 09:24.560 committed all these things and therefore I abhored them and what is that it's 09:24.560 --> 09:26.740 kind of like a threat he's giving he's like you know if you start acting 09:45.720 --> 09:50.400 difference between clean beast and unclean and between unclean fouls and 09:50.400 --> 09:55.840 clean and you shall not make your souls abominable by beasts or by foul or 10:13.120 --> 10:17.760 unclean animal because we see if that was true you know then God's causing 10:17.760 --> 10:21.720 his people to sin in Genesis chapter 9 when he specifically said you can eat 10:21.720 --> 10:26.480 the unclean animals right this is obviously a law that he instituted at 10:26.480 --> 10:32.020 this particular time in this era in order to symbolically represent that he 10:32.020 --> 10:36.880 wanted his people to be separated from the unclean which is why he talks about 10:36.880 --> 10:40.940 hey don't be like the other nations I abhorred them I'm gonna give you their 10:40.940 --> 10:44.380 land and then he says in verse 25 ye shall therefore put difference between 10:44.380 --> 10:48.800 clean beast and unclean beasts in other words a way to remember how 10:48.800 --> 10:52.500 separated I want you to be from the other nations is that you're gonna 10:52.500 --> 10:56.520 abide by these dietary laws that will remind you of that so it's just like 10:56.520 --> 10:59.920 hey don't be like the cane and I because the cane and I in God's eyes is like 10:59.920 --> 11:04.980 the shrimp it's like the swine it's like the the these unclean animals that 11:04.980 --> 11:08.480 you're not supposed to touch and when you abide by that law you're reminding 11:08.480 --> 11:12.540 yourself hey I'm not supposed to be like the other nations and so forth and 11:12.540 --> 11:15.940 obviously we know that that changes in the New Testament New Testament tells 11:15.940 --> 11:19.720 us that every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused if every 11:19.720 --> 11:23.060 received with thanksgiving for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer 11:23.060 --> 11:27.980 first Timothy chapter 4 he goes on to say verse 26 and he shall be holy unto me 11:28.900 --> 11:34.680 for I the Lord am holy and have I want you to notice this severed you from 11:34.680 --> 11:40.500 other people that ye should be mine so he's saying here you're my people I 11:40.500 --> 11:44.200 want you to be separated you shall not be like the other nations and then 11:44.200 --> 11:46.900 he just says look just put it this way I've kind of cut you off from 11:46.900 --> 11:52.080 everyone else I've severed you from everyone else demonstrating that God 11:52.080 --> 11:59.140 wants us to be different separated holy unto him away from everyone else okay 11:59.140 --> 12:03.960 go to Deuteronomy chapter 4 if you would Deuteronomy chapter 4 the title 12:03.960 --> 12:08.640 of the sermon is be different we should endeavor as God's people to be 12:08.640 --> 12:14.180 holy righteous and different distinctly different from everyone else 12:14.180 --> 12:19.100 distinguished in this world based upon the principles and doctrines of the Bible 12:19.100 --> 12:24.020 look at Deuteronomy chapter 4 and look at verse number 5 it says behold I have 12:24.020 --> 12:28.760 taught you statutes and judgments even as the Lord my God commanded me you 12:28.760 --> 12:32.900 should do so in the land whether you go to possess it keep therefore and do 12:32.900 --> 12:35.940 them for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the side of the 12:35.940 --> 12:40.500 nations which shall hear of these statutes and say surely this great 12:40.500 --> 12:44.940 nation is a wise and understanding people so you know God is blessing Israel at 12:44.940 --> 12:51.300 this particular time with knowledge and wisdom amazing statutes of civil law 12:51.300 --> 12:56.480 and all these precepts that he's laying out in the Old Testament and he's like 12:56.480 --> 13:00.000 I'm doing it for your benefit but I'm also doing it so that other nations 13:00.000 --> 13:06.760 can be attracted to you okay I want them to see that you are a wise and 13:06.760 --> 13:11.720 understanding people that you're valuable that you are that treasure until the 13:11.720 --> 13:16.440 Lord he goes on to say in verse 7 for what nation is there so great who had God 13:16.440 --> 13:21.780 so nigh unto them as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon Him 13:21.780 --> 13:26.560 for and what nation is there so great that that statutes and judgments so 13:26.560 --> 13:31.380 righteous as all this law which I set before you this day so in other 13:31.380 --> 13:34.100 words he's like I want people to look at this nation be like man this 13:34.100 --> 13:38.000 Israel is just an amazing nation not because there's anything amazing 13:38.000 --> 13:42.820 inherently about them but because of their God because of what they believe 13:42.820 --> 13:47.680 because of their convictions because of their laws you know in like manner 13:47.680 --> 13:53.920 there's nothing inherently great about us now we're God's people we are that 13:53.920 --> 13:58.380 treasure yes we're peculiar unto the Lord but it should be a reflection of 13:58.380 --> 14:02.480 the laws of God in us right it should be the fact that they see what we 14:02.480 --> 14:07.080 believe and see something different and think to themselves I want what that 14:07.080 --> 14:11.920 person has because of what they believe what they abide by the statutes that 14:11.920 --> 14:15.960 they hold to the convictions that they have go to Deuteronomy chapter 14 14:15.960 --> 14:21.980 look at Deuteronomy chapter 14 if you would Deuteronomy chapter 14 title 14:21.980 --> 14:26.100 the sermon is be different this is all introduction here Deuteronomy chapter 14:26.100 --> 14:33.520 14 in verse 2 it says that it says this for thou art and holy people unto the 14:33.520 --> 14:39.140 Lord thy God and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto 14:39.140 --> 14:44.900 himself above all the nations that are upon the earth so again we see here 14:44.900 --> 14:49.300 that God is explicitly saying you're supposed to be peculiar now peculiar 14:49.300 --> 14:53.340 the way we would use it today is like you're kind of like weird right and I'm 14:53.340 --> 14:57.540 into that particular point later on but in the Bible when the Bible says 14:57.540 --> 15:01.220 peculiar obviously it could have that connotation but it's more closely 15:01.220 --> 15:06.960 related to just different separated holy unto himself okay so there obviously 15:06.960 --> 15:10.020 has to be some sort of characteristics some attributes that you have about 15:10.020 --> 15:13.800 your life that makes you peculiar and this morning I kind of want to go 15:13.800 --> 15:17.040 through some of the things that God wants you to be different in number 15:17.040 --> 15:22.240 one go to Matthew chapter 7 if you would Matthew chapter 7 Matthew chapter 15:22.240 --> 15:28.340 7 if you would too many Christians today are just kind of worldly right and when 15:28.340 --> 15:31.640 we think of worldly we think of oh it's because they listen to Drake or 15:31.640 --> 15:37.780 something right which you know that's just gay and all that but I'm just when 15:37.780 --> 15:40.680 the Bible says worldly it's actually referring to the fact that you're just 15:41.240 --> 15:46.140 conformed to the ideologies practices of this world the Bible says love not 15:46.140 --> 15:49.080 the world not that the things that are in the world if any man love the 15:49.080 --> 15:53.620 world the love of the father is not in him you know to be a worldly Christian is 15:53.620 --> 15:59.560 someone who's been spoiled through philosophy and vain deceit right and not 15:59.560 --> 16:05.040 after Christ it's someone who essentially has allowed the philosophies and 16:05.040 --> 16:10.500 ideologies to essentially take preeminence over the Bible and the 16:10.500 --> 16:13.980 Bible is always telling us you know cast down imaginations every high thing 16:13.980 --> 16:17.460 that exalted itself against the knowledge of God it tells us to allow 16:17.460 --> 16:21.400 the word of Christ to dwell in you richly it obviously tells us hey man 16:21.400 --> 16:25.160 should not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeded out of the 16:25.160 --> 16:29.440 mouth of God I have esteemed the words of thy mouth more than my necessary foods 16:29.440 --> 16:33.760 so it's obviously constantly emphasizing the importance of having God's word 16:33.760 --> 16:38.000 above everything else and filtering everything that we do and believe
