00:09.630 I remember when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, 00:09.630 --> 00:11.250 there was this really prominent teaching 00:11.250 --> 00:13.230 that was constantly out there saying that, 00:13.270 --> 00:16.530 you know, human beings are basically good, right? 00:17.150 --> 00:19.130 People are good on the inside. 00:19.270 --> 00:20.690 Everybody starts out good, 00:20.710 --> 00:24.130 and it's just society that made them bad. 00:24.270 --> 00:25.750 It's someone mistreated them, 00:25.950 --> 00:28.090 something bad happened to them that made them bad. 00:28.090 --> 00:30.190 Of course, this is very illogical 00:30.190 --> 00:32.950 because if people are basically good, 00:33.310 --> 00:35.210 where did this bad society come from 00:35.210 --> 00:36.430 that's ruining everyone? 00:36.910 --> 00:38.190 It doesn't really make a lot of sense 00:38.190 --> 00:41.090 since the society consists of people. 00:41.470 --> 00:46.030 But this worldview is very prevalent today as well. 00:46.390 --> 00:48.650 This idea that people are good, 00:48.950 --> 00:51.990 there's good in everyone, everyone can be fixed, 00:52.650 --> 00:53.890 and you know, people are nice. 00:54.030 --> 00:55.810 We just have to put them in the right environment. 00:56.170 --> 00:57.790 We just have to give them the right teaching 00:57.790 --> 00:58.810 and everything's gonna be great. 00:59.170 --> 01:01.770 Hey, the Bible teaches the opposite of this. 01:02.110 --> 01:04.990 The Bible teaches that people are inherently bad. 01:05.690 --> 01:07.310 And you know, another way of saying this 01:07.310 --> 01:11.210 is that the default setting for humans is to do wrong. 01:11.950 --> 01:14.630 It's to do bad, it's to be evil, it's to be wicked, 01:15.070 --> 01:17.410 and we have to be taught to do well. 01:17.590 --> 01:19.350 We have to be trained to do well. 01:19.730 --> 01:21.170 And really, at the end of the day, 01:21.410 --> 01:24.090 even with all the teaching and with all the training, 01:24.090 --> 01:27.530 the only way we're truly going to be good in this world 01:27.530 --> 01:30.010 is through the power of the Holy Spirit, 01:30.230 --> 01:33.230 through the transformative power of being saved 01:33.230 --> 01:36.150 by believing in Jesus Christ, the new creature, 01:36.550 --> 01:40.250 the new man, the inward man is really the only way 01:40.250 --> 01:43.390 to ultimately transcend our sinful nature. 01:43.770 --> 01:46.430 And then even then, we're still gonna have a battle 01:46.430 --> 01:47.750 every day with the flesh. 01:47.930 --> 01:50.970 The old man can never be totally eradicated. 01:50.970 --> 01:53.810 And so every day we've got to put on the new man, 01:53.970 --> 01:55.470 put on the Lord Jesus Christ. 01:55.870 --> 01:58.350 Now, when we go back to Genesis here, 01:58.490 --> 02:00.010 go back to chapter six, if you would, 02:00.350 --> 02:03.550 you see that this teaching comes very early in the Bible. 02:04.050 --> 02:05.770 You don't have to read very far 02:05.770 --> 02:08.590 to get to this understanding of the sinfulness 02:09.050 --> 02:09.750 of humanity. 02:10.290 --> 02:11.590 Look at Genesis chapter six. 02:11.670 --> 02:13.710 This is, of course, leading up to the flood 02:14.290 --> 02:17.130 and talking about the condition that the world was in 02:17.130 --> 02:18.970 that led to God flooding the whole earth. 02:18.970 --> 02:20.650 And it says in verse number five, 02:21.170 --> 02:24.050 and God saw that the wickedness of man 02:24.050 --> 02:25.730 was great in the earth, 02:25.970 --> 02:30.390 and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart 02:30.890 --> 02:33.650 was only evil continually. 02:34.250 --> 02:36.230 I mean, that's a pretty strong statement 02:36.230 --> 02:38.390 to just say, you know, God looks down 02:38.390 --> 02:41.190 and he's just like, man, people are just bad 02:41.190 --> 02:42.550 all day, every day. 02:42.710 --> 02:45.230 People are just thinking evil thoughts, 02:45.470 --> 02:47.950 the imagination, and the thoughts of man's heart 02:47.950 --> 02:49.690 is only evil continually. 02:49.870 --> 02:51.630 And I have a question for you, you know, 02:52.130 --> 02:54.610 is this some other species of man? 02:55.290 --> 02:57.370 You know, is this Neanderthal man or something? 02:57.490 --> 03:00.530 No, these are the exact same human beings 03:00.530 --> 03:02.230 that we are today. 03:02.730 --> 03:04.870 This is just because they've gone downhill 03:04.870 --> 03:08.790 as a society and gotten worse, worse, worse 03:08.790 --> 03:10.250 to the point where God looks down 03:10.250 --> 03:12.890 and it's just, wow, every imagination 03:12.890 --> 03:15.490 of the thoughts of man's heart is only evil continually. 03:15.930 --> 03:19.650 And then only Noah does he find righteous 03:19.650 --> 03:22.790 and Noah finds grace in his sight, 03:22.890 --> 03:25.210 meaning that obviously Noah's not perfect, 03:25.670 --> 03:28.390 Noah's still a sinner, but he finds grace 03:28.390 --> 03:29.810 in the eyes of the Lord. 03:29.950 --> 03:33.730 At least he is somewhat doing right before the flood. 03:34.150 --> 03:36.570 Now go to After the Flood, Genesis chapter eight. 03:37.770 --> 03:40.590 And remember, you know, God has just flooded 03:40.590 --> 03:43.330 the entire world just to eradicate 03:43.330 --> 03:46.610 the unbelievable evil that has built up 03:46.950 --> 03:49.530 from just humans, just getting worse and worse 03:49.950 --> 03:51.370 and just being so evil. 03:51.770 --> 03:54.350 He eradicates everyone and just gets to the point 03:54.350 --> 03:57.770 where it's just Noah and seven other people on the Ark. 03:57.850 --> 04:01.010 It's just Noah, Noah's wife, his three sons 04:01.010 --> 04:02.190 and their three wives. 04:02.470 --> 04:05.530 These are the only people, these people get off the Ark, 04:05.650 --> 04:09.030 this one family, the best family in the world, 04:09.670 --> 04:12.310 the only family that even gets spared 04:12.310 --> 04:14.130 the catastrophe of the flood. 04:14.450 --> 04:15.970 And it says this in verse 21, 04:16.150 --> 04:17.770 the Lord smelled a sweet saver. 04:17.990 --> 04:18.190 Why? 04:18.490 --> 04:21.470 Because Noah is offering up burnt offerings under the Lord. 04:21.850 --> 04:24.810 Noah smelled a sweet saver and the Lord said in his heart, 04:25.290 --> 04:27.310 so he's not saying this to humans, 04:27.510 --> 04:31.130 this is just his thought process up in heaven. 04:31.630 --> 04:33.030 The Lord says in his heart, 04:33.610 --> 04:37.810 I will not curse the ground anymore for man's sake. 04:37.910 --> 04:40.130 He said, I'm not going to again curse the ground 04:40.130 --> 04:41.330 anymore for man's sake, 04:41.870 --> 04:48.010 for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. 04:48.170 --> 04:50.950 So even just as a blanket statement about humanity, 04:51.350 --> 04:53.650 even after you've wiped out all the worst people 04:53.650 --> 04:56.050 and you've whittled it down to the best family, 04:56.450 --> 04:58.210 you still have this to say here 04:58.970 --> 05:02.190 that man's heart is evil from his youth. 05:02.370 --> 05:04.430 The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. 05:04.690 --> 05:07.890 So this doesn't sound to me like a learned behavior 05:07.890 --> 05:10.510 necessarily because it's from his youth. 05:10.790 --> 05:13.050 It's like he starts out being sinful 05:13.630 --> 05:15.530 and has wicked imaginations. 05:16.070 --> 05:18.770 And again, this is not some other species of man here. 05:18.870 --> 05:21.890 There's only one kind of human and it's you, it's me, 05:22.370 --> 05:23.110 it's all of us. 05:23.330 --> 05:24.950 What does the Bible say much later? 05:25.410 --> 05:26.290 Thousands of years later. 05:26.590 --> 05:28.650 It says in Jeremiah 17.9, 05:29.070 --> 05:31.930 the heart is deceitful above all things 05:31.930 --> 05:36.490 and desperately wicked, desperately wicked. 05:36.490 --> 05:38.850 And that's talking about the heart of man in general. 05:40.590 --> 05:41.630 Who can know it? 05:42.290 --> 05:43.930 I, the Lord, search the heart. 05:44.090 --> 05:46.610 I try the reigns even to give every man according 05:46.610 --> 05:48.970 to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings. 05:48.970 --> 05:49.850 Let's go to the New Testament. 05:50.090 --> 05:51.370 How about Mark chapter seven? 05:51.690 --> 05:54.250 Flip over if you were to mark chapter seven in the Bible. 05:55.190 --> 05:57.130 And so we see that, you know, 05:57.170 --> 05:58.750 the heart is deceitful above all things. 05:59.550 --> 06:02.470 The apostle Paul, arguably the greatest Christian 06:02.470 --> 06:04.330 who ever lived said in Romans chapter seven, 06:04.330 --> 06:07.810 I know that in me that is in my flesh, 06:08.350 --> 06:09.890 dwelleth no good thing. 06:10.050 --> 06:12.230 He says, man, I look at myself, I look at my flesh, 06:12.370 --> 06:16.230 I look in my heart and I see sinfulness, wickedness. 06:16.370 --> 06:18.590 Now look, there are a lot of holier-than-thous out there. 06:18.850 --> 06:20.390 There are a lot of people out there 06:20.390 --> 06:22.770 that think that they're so wonderful and sinless. 06:23.030 --> 06:24.810 But at the end of the day, if we're honest, 06:25.190 --> 06:28.670 we know that we all have sinful tendencies, 06:30.190 --> 06:31.070 sinful proclivities. 06:31.470 --> 06:33.950 We know that we all have a sinful nature. 06:33.950 --> 06:35.610 We know that if we were to just kind of just 06:35.610 --> 06:38.590 let ourselves go and just do whatever, 06:39.090 --> 06:40.350 it would not be pretty. 06:41.310 --> 06:44.530 This is why we need to be saved, 06:44.670 --> 06:45.910 number one, so that we can go to heaven, 06:46.090 --> 06:49.070 but number two, so that we can also transcend 06:49.070 --> 06:52.310 our sinful flesh and actually live a good life. 06:53.690 --> 06:56.830 Not perfect, but at least we can live a good life 06:56.830 --> 06:58.870 in all godliness and honesty 06:58.870 --> 07:01.630 and really become a better person. 07:02.170 --> 07:04.170 Look at Mark chapter seven, verse 20. 07:04.270 --> 07:06.230 This is Jesus talking. 07:06.510 --> 07:08.950 He said, that which cometh out of the man, 07:09.730 --> 07:10.710 that defiles the man. 07:10.790 --> 07:12.490 And again, what's this wisdom of, 07:12.790 --> 07:14.910 oh man's basically good, it's just society 07:14.910 --> 07:16.070 that's ruining man? 07:17.490 --> 07:19.330 It's saying that something external 07:20.030 --> 07:21.670 is coming in and corrupting man. 07:22.150 --> 07:23.770 But what the Bible is actually saying 07:23.770 --> 07:25.950 is that nothing that goes into the man is defiling 07:25.950 --> 07:28.550 and it's what comes out of the man that defiles him. 07:28.550 --> 07:31.810 Meaning that man is the source of the wickedness 07:31.810 --> 07:35.410 out of man, that is what defiles him. 07:35.450 --> 07:37.410 And again, this is also related to the idea 07:37.410 --> 07:40.490 of the quote, noble savage, right? 07:41.010 --> 07:44.050 The noble savage idea that basically people 07:44.410 --> 07:46.190 who are outside of civilization 07:46.190 --> 07:48.270 just kind of living in nature, 07:48.530 --> 07:49.610 here's another way to say it, 07:49.870 --> 07:51.330 living like animals, 07:51.950 --> 07:53.890 that people who are just kind of primitive 07:53.890 --> 07:55.350 and living like animals 07:55.830 --> 07:58.550 are somehow superior to those of us 07:58.550 --> 07:59.990 who actually live in cities 08:00.670 --> 08:05.030 and eat actual cooked food or whatever. 08:06.290 --> 08:08.430 But the idea here is that, 08:08.550 --> 08:11.430 oh, the noble savage, he's living in harmony 08:12.050 --> 08:14.010 and he's a hunter-gatherer, 08:14.270 --> 08:15.630 or his life was so good. 08:15.710 --> 08:17.630 I mean, you'll see these articles every once in a while 08:17.630 --> 08:19.610 that are like, oh, life was so much better 08:19.610 --> 08:20.830 when we were hunter-gatherers. 08:20.870 --> 08:22.290 It was just all leisure time. 08:22.530 --> 08:24.590 And it's like, bro, that is a lie. 08:24.590 --> 08:25.330 That is garbage. 08:25.710 --> 08:27.610 If you look at these primitive societies, 08:28.070 --> 08:30.150 I mean, they're living hand to mouth. 08:30.330 --> 08:31.350 There's cannibalism. 08:31.510 --> thoughts, adulteries, 09:25.650 --> 09:29.810 fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, 09:29.930 --> 09:32.330 deceit, lasciviousness and evil eye, 09:32.790 --> 09:34.290 blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 09:34.750 --> 09:37.650 All these things come from within and defiled the man. 09:38.110 --> 09:40.970 And so you don't have to teach kids any of these things. 09:41.250 --> They're not innately good. 10:05.530 --> 10:09.550 They don't get corrupted by bad things externally 10:09.550 --> 10:13.390 as much as they are corruptors corrupting themselves 10:13.390 --> 10:14.670 and everyone around them 10:14.670 --> 10:16.650 from the wickedness of their own heart. 10:17.270 --> 10:19.290 Go if you would to Ephesians chapter two. 10:19.790 --> 10:21.350 Ephesians chapter number two. 10:22.350 --> 10:24.770 And again, you know, this makes a huge difference 10:24.770 --> 10:28.190 in how you look at life and how you look at the world, 10:28.350 --> 10:30.110 11:37.690 We need the whole book to straighten us out. 11:38.670 --> 11:41.950 And we spend our lives meditating on the word of God, 11:42.550 --> 11:45.190 attending church, following the precepts of the Bible, 11:45.370 --> 11:47.050 praying and speaking to ourselves 11:47.050 --> 11:48.510 and Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs 11:48.510 --> 11:50.230 and it's going to make us a better person. 11:51.390 --> 11:53.570 Whereas if we're just left to our own devices, 11:54.050 --> 11:57.510 we're going to go down a downward spiral of morality 11:57.510 --> 12:00.030 and as our country gets de-Christianized, 12:00.070 --> 12:02.430 it's not going to become a better place, 12:02.930 --> 12:04.010 a more godly place. 12:04.250 --> 12:05.530 No, it's going to get worse. 12:05.930 --> 12:08.190 You know, and the more that we embrace the Lord 12:08.190 --> 12:09.870 and the gospel, the better we're going to be 12:11.110 --> 12:13.450 because the sinful nature is the problem. 12:14.390 --> 12:16.090 Look at Ephesians chapter two verse one 12:16.090 --> 12:17.290 and you had the quick end 12:17.290 --> 12:19.050 who were dead in trespasses and sins, 12:19.810 --> 12:21.050 wherein in time pass you walked 12:21.050 --> 12:22.590 according to the course of this world, 12:23.290 --> 12:25.790 according to the prince of the power of the air, 12:25.910 --> 12:28.570 the spirit that now work in the children of disobedience. 12:28.690 --> 12:29.630 Of course we're talking about the devil. 12:31.230 --> 12:33.910 Among them also, we all had our conversation 12:33.910 --> 12:36.830 in time pass in the lusts of our flesh, 12:36.830 --> 12:40.630 fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind 12:41.150 --> 12:43.930 and we're watched this by nature, 12:44.290 --> 12:46.410 the children of wrath, even as others. 12:46.890 --> 12:52.770 By nature, we were the children of wrath before we got saved 12:53.050 --> 12:56.670 and we were walking according to the course of this world. 12:57.130 --> 13:00.250 You think about the word course, things run their course 13:00.250 --> 13:02.630 and the world is kind of running a certain way 13:02.630 --> 13:05.050 and we were kind of going that same way 13:05.410 --> 13:07.850 and really the God of this world, quote unquote, 13:08.090 --> 13:10.950 is the devil and we were fulfilling his will 13:10.950 --> 13:14.330 and we were by nature, children of disobedience, 13:14.650 --> 13:15.990 children of wrath, right? 13:16.310 --> 13:18.610 But then when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ 13:18.610 --> 13:22.130 by grace through faith, now we are saved, 13:22.330 --> 13:23.630 we're a new creature in Christ, 13:23.930 --> 13:24.990 old things are passed away, 13:25.150 --> 13:27.090 behold all things are become new. 13:27.490 --> 13:31.490 This is the answer for actually getting things right 13:31.490 --> 13:32.770 in your life, okay? 13:32.770 --> 13:36.410 Not just hey, we just gotta meditate and look within 13:36.410 --> 13:39.630 and empty our minds and get in a tree pose 13:39.630 --> 13:41.290 and say ohm or whatever. 13:41.610 --> 13:42.670 That's not gonna do it friend. 13:43.270 --> 13:45.870 You know what we need to be doing is being renewed 13:45.870 --> 13:47.010 in the spirit of our mind, 13:47.230 --> 13:50.110 the washing of the water by the word is what we need. 13:50.930 --> 13:52.630 So that's what the Bible's teaching there 13:52.630 --> 13:56.250 in Ephesians chapter two, flip over to Romans chapter three, 13:56.350 --> 13:58.530 Romans chapter three and of course in Romans 512, 13:58.650 --> 14:01.090 we have the famous verse where for us by one man, 14:01.090 --> 14:04.010 sin entered into the world and death by sin 14:04.010 --> 14:08.370 and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned. 14:08.370 --> 14:11.730 We all inherited the sinful nature from Adam 14:11.730 --> 14:13.870 and therefore every single person on this planet 14:13.870 --> 14:16.210 themselves they have sinned, right? 14:16.370 --> 14:18.610 It's not that we're being punished for Adam's sin, 14:18.770 --> 14:21.470 it's that we all individually ourselves have sinned, 14:21.550 --> 14:24.010 our own sins that we are responsible for. 14:24.530 --> 14:26.410 But look at Romans chapter three verse nine, 14:26.470 --> 14:27.250 it says what then? 14:27.830 --> 14:28.930 Are we better than they? 14:29.750 --> 14:30.950 No and no wise. 14:31.290 --> 14:34.630 For we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles 14:34.630 --> 14:36.490 that they are all under sin. 14:36.710 --> 14:38.730 And are we better than they is saying, 14:38.990 --> 14:40.930 hey are the Jews better than the Gentiles? 14:41.210 --> 14:43.210 Hey are the Gentiles better than the Jews? 14:43.490 --> 14:45.370 And the answer is of course no 14:45.910 --> 14:48.570 because we before proved both Jews and Gentiles 14:48.570 --> 14:50.090 that they are all under sin. 14:50.230 --> 14:54.330 As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one. 14:54.890 --> 14:57.190 Verse 11, there's none that understand it, 14:57.190 --> 14:59.190 there's none that seek it after God,
